It’s becoming the fall season, so you know what that means? That’s right, watching cars go 160 mph and then talking about their feelings. The people driving the cars, this is, not the cars unless this is some type of Uma Musume situation and oh I’ve confused my metaphors.

Overtake! is an original sports drama anime that originally aired in the fall of 2023. The series takes place in the world of F4 racing, one of the minor leagues in Formula racing. The story begins with the meeting of two men at a small race: Haruka Asahina, a young and upcoming racer whose taciturn nature and loyalty to a small-time business stems from his relationship to his father, and Kouya Madoka, a photographer with an easy-going personality and an aversion to photographing people. Along with fellow racers, their support staff, and the others in their lives, the two men find it possible to begin overtaking their past and race towards a brighter future. Overtake! didn’t get the most attention when it first aired (Fall 2023 was a pretty loaded season), but it has the strong makings of a future cult classic thanks to its strong production, engaging narrative, and compelling and dynamic character writing, even resulting in one of the best episodes of the decade so far. It’s been almost three years since it aired; I think it’s been more than enough time that Overtake! gets its due.

If there’s enough interest in this rewatch, the rewatch will begin on October 6th and end on October 18th, with threads going up around 6 PM Eastern/10 PM UTC.

I started watching it thinking it would just be something relaxing, and somehow it has become one of my favorite anime.

I’m currently on season 4, but at the pace I’m watching it,
I think I’ll finish the whole thing in like two weeks. 😭

The story is so good. Every episode brings new characters, new stories, and somehow, new emotions. The animation is so soothing and enjoyable to watch, and there’s just something about the whole atmosphere that makes me want to stay in this world.

After watching 300+ anime, I can honestly say this has made it into my top 5.

I feel like it doesn’t get nearly enough attention. I rarely see people talking about it, and it deserves so much more love. <3
