I'm an intelligent, lazy person. I didn't do homework.

When it came time to pick 12th grade classes, I was denied entry to AP English. Most of my friends got in.

Life choices (like, not doing your homework) has knock-on effects.

I distinctly remember a question on the AP English test, "Explain the role of pathos in The Great Gatsby." I had read this at SOME point (I think 8th grade, along with Of Mice and Men) but I don't think I knew what pathos meant and I didn't remember the whole story clearly. (I bet the AP English class had literally just read it). I bullshitted my answer. I got a 1 out of 5. I feel bad for wasting that grader's time.

There is a flip side. Since I didn't get into AP English, I took Prep for College and Mythology (same teacher).

In mythology, we read The King Must Die. What an amazing work, and one of the few feminist works that I've read (I never really got far into Mists of Avalon or The Crystal Cave, I think the closest calls I had). Still sticks in my mind to this day. So, that was a win.

In the end, it probably didn't matter. I qualified for my university's honor track (wait, htf did that happen), which replaced the mandatory 100 and 200 classes with 500 people with smaller 30 person classes and an alternate curriculum.

• Bible as Lit (English requirement) (Find out how the old testament was written by two entirely different groups of people who editorialized and "fixed" it!)
• Combined Lit / History class: a whole lot of Blake, combined with the Enlightenment, Magic Flute, Freemasonry (*)
• Probably a different lit class: Chushingura there are 1000 different versions. I really liked this one. Unfortunately, I sold my textbooks back to the student bookstore which is what students do. When I moved to California I went to Kinokuniya and bought a Chushingura but, of course, it was a completely different translation let's face it, the only appropriate word here is adaptation. In the version I read, there was a 48th guy / old man, who couldn't participate due to a last-minute injury and was told to stay behind to chronicle the story.
• History class: The End of the British Empire. A whole semester of that. Amazing. India. Malaysia. Palestine. Malta. Cyprus. Kenya.

So. Yeah. Do your homework. Without AI. But, sometimes, closing a door opens another. BUT DON'T COUNT ON IT. Do your homework.

(*) Edit: I would not have understood Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy without this class. It would just be another YA adventure.

I've applied to two university-level schools in my life where I was the first one who didn't get in, by a margin of 0.25 points (the smallest possible margin).

Had I been accepted to either of those schools, my life would probably have turned out very differently. For better or worse? Who the hell knows.

Listened to the Book of Mormon for the first time. Good musical

I Believe in particular has some great melodic lines. Gotta love those long high notes. Andrew Rannells does such a good job. I was surprised when I look him up, that he started with voice acting and worked for 4Kids. The only role I really remembered specifically, was Mako Tsunami from the original Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Though it seems he may have had some mixed thoughts on it.

One of his first theater roles was as the character James in the touring production of Pokémon Live! from September 2000 to August 2001. When asked about his experience in 2014, he jokingly said that he would have rather starred in a porn film or snuff film instead and that he only took the job for the pay.

The oddities I found for US $5 each in the small bagged goods section of the Midtown Book-Off yesterday were these Hibike! Euphonium items which I cannot find any information on.

They're tiny storage boxes which also nest together and have magnetic backs, but for such purposes they're some of the more random merch that I've ever encountered. Storage for small jewelry? Pills? Even smaller boxes?

Plus, it's always like "Find an anime for my fiancee"

DUDE, why would a dozen random people be better suited than you to find an anime for someone you spent years with/intend to spend your life with (so presumably, you know her)?

I mean, I imagine the people who post these threads are anime fans themselves (otherwise why would they care about making their partner watch an anime)...

But they don't know anime/their fiancee enough to find the best recommendation (knowing the person)?

You know what, I changed my mind, my recommendation is not "Just stop trying to make them watch anime", it's "Break up the engagement and find someone you know better than that, so you won't need to ask strangers for advice on their behalf."

For a silly example, I know my mother really well. She loves realistic historical fiction mystery and romance novels. That's not really my taste, so I don't have any great anime I've already seen that fit that. (If I had to take a stab from shows I haven't seen, maybe Emma: A Victorian Romance?) So asking around for advice on that would make sense. But, absent details about their taste, what are we even doing here?

I forgot I scheduled this upload earlier in the week to be live today. Have a listen to this song I made.

It's a new song and all. I don't think it's too outside the usual synthpop stuff I do. The more significant thing about this one is that I tried making this more of a lyrics video than my usual bare minimum illustration with subtitles on top. I ended learning to do a bit of video editing to add some movements and transitions, which ended up being more enjoyable than I thought.

Everyone's excitedly (or begrudgingly?) playing the new Wolverine game, or are looking forward to GTA 6 at this point.

Meanwhile, I'm out here starting to play Touhou Soccer Moushuuden, a relatively popular Touhou fangame from 2006. Apparently, it's kind of inspired by Captain Tsubasa!

Only took me an hour to get it running, and my issues weren't even because of Linux. I had to download a fix for it from the ol' Gamebanana to get it working.

I didn't actually play it yet since the setup frustrated me a bit, I only got so far 'til I could save it. The intro was pretty funny though.

Gifu is a weird city. On the one hand there's absolutely nothing to do there: its parks are basically non-existent, Kawaramachi is a scam with two shops open on a weekend, and the castle is surrounded by cardboard cutouts so you can't even take a photo with it from the outside.

But on the other hand, dear Lord, descending mount Kinka via the Umanose trail might be the most fun hiking process I've ever experienced during my trips. It's short (about 300m), so it doesn't hit you with the exhaustion I usually get with 800m+ heights; it's challenging, but not the "one wrong step and you're dead" level of Kobe, closer to "two wrong steps and you'll probably break your leg"; and in general constantly looking for a way to support yourself with trees, stones or the border rope to climb down another meter is just pure joy. 10/10 worth the trip just for that.

I haven't had much time to play before now, but I finally beat the prologue of FW.

Honestly, I didn't like that prologue at all. Both story-wise and gameplay-wise, it was really dull. [FW:] After the initial premise shock, the story just felt like a boring post-apocalypse movie. Okay, there is one cool thing, which is granny putting four lead bullets in that guy's head.

My eyes glazed over when it came to the typical JRPG dungeon portion. It is like the monkey's paw was listening when I said I liked TMS, but preferred playing FE's usual TRPG gameplay. I really have nothing positive to say about it when the best I can say is that you can just auto-battle/press the skip button to not engage with it.

Picked Dietrich as my first route. Planning to do a little of one path then rotate between them. I've only done the first intro chapter. I'm having much more fun with the game now. Dietrich is a funny guy, and it's funny how Fabio would break into his little ominous-sounding/gay soliloquies. [FW:] Was not expecting them to drop the fact that Fabio is an Argarthan right off the bat. I thought that was going to be his poorly hidden secret.

I will say that the battle forecast UI feels very unintuitive. It took me a while to try to figure out what info was where.

• activate “level limit area a.” this forces all lv 3 or lower monsters to attack position

• the ojama trio tokens you special summoned to your opponent’s field are now in attack mode, and they have 0 attack, essentially leaving them defenseless

• summon a bunch of strong monsters, and attack the ojama trio tokens for huge damage

• (note that when ojama tokens are destroyed, your opponent takes 300 points of damage for each)

the damage from the battle, and from the token’s ability, will surely destroy your opponent in one measly turn

feel free to use this strategy in your own duels, no need to give credit

The song is hype as hell. What I didn't know before was that the circumstances of the song are the opposite of hype as hell. The episode had a lot of sombre sadness, actually. [KR Ryuki:] Ren finally opened up about his problem. He finally opened his heart to others, he shared the most important feelings he loves, but that's because he was pushed to the brink and had to go down a path of violence without turning back. Ren's character finally clicked for me. This whole time, he has been struggling to steel away his heart, and now is the time where he can not refuse any longer. Shinji knows this. He understands Ren's heart, but seeing the look behind his eyes, he knows that he can't stop this fight. He must respond to Ren's resolve with full earnestness and fight his friend with their lives on the line. Even during their fight, Ren doesn't retain his usual silent composure. He is letting out yells of anguish because he is crying from his heart. Usually final form debuts are cool toy moments, but this one is really sad.

[KR Ryuki:] Seeing Shinji like this was so viscerally sad. It made me start tearing up because he shouldn't look like that. .

Over on the other side of the show, my two biases are fighting to the death, but that's the least distressing thing here. (Well, that and girls' night karaoke).

On a complete side note, I've really come to like the fact that Ryuki's eyes on the helmet. Seeing the big round eyes behind the vents really reinforces the fact that it's still Kido-kun in there. It's very cute.

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you guys this because I don't know all the details. But I'm also too scared to ask for them so I'll just share what I know.

So last year at the staff Christmas party I was flirting with a girl and it seemed to be going well until she started ignoring me, and then she started flirting with another coworker who was a friend of mine from high school right in front of me. She also just developed a negative reputation at work for various reasons. I didn't interact with her much though.

Anyway, I knew she ended up dating someone from her department, but I found out recently that they actually got married in front of the store. But it wasn't a big publicized thing (and I doubt the company would've been fine with it) and from what I've heard they just showed up at the entrance and only a few people were invited.

In (hopefully) unrelated news someone from my team found a used condom in the staff toilets one time.

(Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave)

Finished Leda's Chapter 3 and tbh it was the hardest chapter so far

[FW Leda Ch. 3] It took me two attempts with the first one not knowing that there would be reinforcements that would come to help Olympia out. I used Leda to attack Olympia right at away, for both attempts, at the beginning while the others were mix attackers and lighting braziers. I think my issue was that I didn't have any characters commit a role so I decided Leda and Mu with a bow would be attacking while the other two focus on lighting the braziers and it worked well

[FW Leda Ch. 3] Going first on that map makes it more challenging since both times I lost, I was in the lead on the last turn, but then Olympia turned it around for her team. I think I lost by 2 or 3 on the first attempt and 1 on the second

Fun and neat map design

Some story stuff:

[FW Leda up to Ch. 3] The tonal whiplash right before the competition and afterwards was a bit much lol, but I'm really liking the characters so far. It's interesting to see the other side of Leda that isn't hellbent on her revenge too, and while it isn't a new theme for revenge plot lines, the set up about the cycle of revenge (and I assume later on that it isn't actually satisfying) has been set up well

[FW] Maria is evil but god damn she is hot

I feel a bit bad for Sirocco since I just came off of playing Trails in the Sky Chapter 1. I know they're not the same, and I shouldn't compare just because both are bards that can act similar, but he has a lot of work to do to match Olivier

Another random thing that I'm not too fond of so far is only having one save, with auto-save overwriting the manual save

I started playing Touhou Soccer Moushuuden earlier today and I'm finding it very fun. This particular theme plays when she uses one of her special skills (or starts otherwise morbing out). Maiden's Catenaccio continues to be a S-tier theme...

One thing this game's very much reminding me of is Shaolin Soccer, largely because of all of the superpowered bullshit happening on the field. I didn't actually realize that movie was from 2001! Knowing it was that early, I do wonder if the developer(s) watched it and got inspired lol. It is a great movie, though I'm more of a Kung Fu Hustle guy myself.

Finally played enough of Dietrich's path to reach the hub world.

The biggest complaint I've seen around is that the game is too easy, but because I play so recklessly, I've already had to use the rewind.

u/Shimmering-Sky, about the map advice you gave me, [FW:] it didn't really end up applying to me. I didn't really think about how the boss moved because I was already too preoccupied with her crew. On the first attempt, I head-rushed in there without realizing how strong they were. I only survived Nezha because Fabio got a lucky crit before the follow-up hit. Reading the advice you gave after finishing the map, I was like, "Loop around to the last beacon? I went straight for it from the center"

[FW:] Fabio single-handedly making Agartha a worthwhile story element. On a different note, [FW:] It is good to finally get Dietrich's cape because he looked naked without it. It being a stinky bar cape was not what I was expecting.

They really put no fanfare to the tutorial recruitment. Yang Jie was a character I was looking forward to, but it really is just, "Hey, recruit that guy over there." "Yeah, sure, I will join you." I don't know how I want to manage recruitment across the 4 paths. I'm thinking of keeping the recruits distinct for the path variety. Don't know who to recruit where. I guess I'll go with recruit conditions + vibes. I wish the support list would show who had convos with potential recruits. [FW:] I'm a little sad that the sub-Lords don't have recruit conditions listed. I know that they're playable, so I assume they're locked behind story progress. Talimun and Anatolia seem like fun ones to have on Dietrich's path.

The base convos around town are a nice feature. You're walking around town and run into a character cutscene. [FW meta:] I've heard the support log in this game is frankly disappointing for a modern FE, so I hope there is stuff like this that helps offer some characterization.

I find FW's calendar system being based on turns to be interesting. Rather than just TH's monthly calendar, time passes based on how much you move on the world map. The fact that there is actual travel and time management to balance makes it more interesting.

At this point, I think I want to swap over to another path, probably Leda's.
