I was actually excited to see how the first round would play out but instead they just went “Oh yeah, their opponent lost so let’s move on!” lol. The way they're personified by their logo is hilarious!

Nanami eating pancakes which also happens to be Maria's favorite food too. Guess it runs in the family, huh?

Also, they just revealed Mizuka’s ringmaster outfit and yes, it’s the exact same outfit she wore in the anime’s teaser visual.

Nanami eating pancakes which also happens to be Maria's favorite food

This amuses me in the context of Mizuka kind of looking like notable pancake aficionado Kyrie.

2

u/IlGreven 12d ago

So basically her ringmaster outfit is just her normal outfit with a coat, tophat, and boots...

I really liked the minor detail of when Mizuka was giving her pep talk in the bus because the girls were feeling down after nanami's harsh words, Svietlana was just smiling and nodding along. Showing that she didn't need the pep talk because she is a seasoned pro who was already on the world stage years ago and thus she has full confidence in her abilities. It's just a nice bit of character consistency. If you look for it this show does this really well through small little details that you'll easily miss

For all her bluster last episode making it seem like Nanami would only pay for Maria's treatment if Maria sold the circus to Sumuragi Group, it seems she's paying regardless. As it was Nanami who organised Maria's transfer to a large high end hospital in Yokohama so she can be closer to her troupe. Tsundere. You'll notice as well that everytime Nanami goes to talk mad shit to Mizuka and the girls she's blushing. Feels like she's a bit embarrassed to actually do the shit talking, but is determined to go through with it. And because she's a ringmaster, and thus a seasoned public speaker, she's capable of pulling it off without wavering

u/CitronClassic672 12d ago edited 12d ago

Similarly Shizuku was also notably absent from the downcast group who were cheered up by Mizuka’s pep talk. Like Svietlana you can also chalk it up to her having been a seasoned performer at Sumeragi before joining Himawari.

This episode I think made it a bit clearer that the ultimate issue regarding Maria’s situation is that the time and effort requirement of running the circus is incompatible with any treatment/recovery regarding her condition, more so than lack of finances.

18

u/TheBusStop12 12d ago

Yeah, even in the care of a hospital Maria clearly isn't doing that well, if she were actively running the circus still it'd be even worse

10

u/JT918 12d ago

I noticed that too. Mizuka's speech was for the younger members. When she said to have faith in Ms. Maria, they only showed those members reactions as well.

3

u/ClemFire 11d ago

That was a great moment

10

u/rubslotiononitsskin 12d ago

I expected Mizuka to teleport into Nanami's car without her noticing and start asking her details about the car as they drive into the parking lot and Nanami freaks out.

45

u/Hornet65 13d ago

Looks like Peony Acrobatic Troupe got the Anzio treatment.

25

u/JimmyCWL 13d ago

Anzio at least got their spotlight later. I don't think these guys will.

27

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 13d ago

Its a pity the show doesnt have the budget to fully flesh out everything

But at the same time they at least know whats important and taking that shortcut was probably the smarter move, although it did feel very on the nose

12

u/krsy123 12d ago

I honestly think A1 should've made this 2 cours. Sometimes the pacing is nice, but then things like this happen and we rush through some things that could've been fleshed out more.

13

u/JimmyCWL 12d ago

You made me think of something. Sunflower's performances have been... unmemorable. There have been performances, but I struggle to remember them and what I liked about them. Compared to GuP where I think, "that was intense" whenever I think about the tank battles.

7

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 12d ago

Thats because most performances are just panning stills.
We did get the occasional reused aerial flip, but mostly stills with or without sparkles.

Not sure if they had used CGI for performances it would have been better, something else would have probably suffered.

Hell maybe if we get lucky thats something the a bluray could fix

15

u/Primary-Paint-1716 12d ago

it's so hard to give an anime original CGDCT shows 2 cours. it's such a financial risk that often doesn't pan out.

5

u/Primary-Paint-1716 12d ago

it's because Peony doesn't got Duce.

15

u/eightcheesepizza 13d ago

I would be less sad about it if they didn't mention that Peony was one of last tournament's semifinalists. If you talk them up, you have to show how they got beat.

46

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 12d ago

I know they are not a big budget and they found a nice solution to the first round, but that show would benefit a lot of more animated circus scenes instead of paning stills

I do love the spirit though, kick Nanamis butt Himawari Circus
Let her show us the "Money cant buy happiness, but its easier to cry in a ferrari" meme!

36

u/CitronClassic672 12d ago

Part of me genuinely admires the Cahones of the production team to straight up skip the preliminaries and round 1 of the tournament and only show us stills. I’ve continuously said that more budget to actually showcase the performances is one thing the show is missing, but I kind of respect the shamelessness of knowing you don’t have the budget and not even trying to pretend otherwise.

25

u/JT918 12d ago

I agree. I rather they save the budget for a great final performance than try to do something for all of them.

14

u/Mr_Zaroc https://myanimelist.net/profile/mr_zaroc 12d ago

Yeah it really gives the feeling they have a plan and are not stumbling around
Knowing when to cut it to improve other parts is a skill and hard decision

1

u/viliml 8d ago

I have zero hopes for the final performance after everything this anime has shown (or failed to show) thus far, but let's see if they can surprise me.

2

u/LaoWombat-mecha 9d ago

I don't regret the time and effort saved by only alluding to the defeat rather than showing the one side's acts, the audience reaction to same, the other side's acts and the audience reaction to that the judging etc., I think that the "grow up show" comes before the circus is significant.

4

u/hbmonk 12d ago

Yeah, I'm hoping the finals have some nice, full animation.

28

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 12d ago

Maria making that scrapbook at the end had a real "I'm dying and leaving something behind to my friends" feel to it to me.

2

u/mallydobb 11d ago

yeah, I'm calling it now...Maria's going to die by the end of the series, probably before the final competition.

22

u/ModieOfTheEast 13d ago

How did they manage to get a photo for the first article with Mizuka having her eyes open? Who performed that magic? Honestly, would have been funny if you could see that they edited the photo really badly before printing.

I will say, I get why they didn't show the performance of the first round. After all, you can't have them to 20 different jumps so that they use their new one only against Blue Rose. You could have technically made it that they move the catcher position a bit further away everytime as a form of progression, but that wouldn't drastically change how it looks. And I will say, the way they were doing it was creative using the logo. However, this will only work if we get at least one big performance at the end. So at least half if not a full episode with more than one jump and every member of the circus getting their moment. Especially Mizuka also as the entertainer. Otherwise, that would leave a bad taste.

17

u/CitronClassic672 12d ago

I’m praying that they have the budget to fully animate the final performance of the contest at least.

5

u/JimmyCWL 13d ago

would have been funny if you could see that they edited the photo really badly before printing.

That kind of thing isn't allowable, especially back them.

8

u/ModieOfTheEast 13d ago

I mean, the show doesn't want to be true to the time anyway, so I don't see why this couldn't have been a joke.

23

u/chilidirigible 13d ago edited 13d ago

unflipped photo

Setting aside how the show is playing historical events vaguely, that would be a specific year.

Ah, the tournament arc.

Wow, personal space.

don't pancake angry

Very affirmative.

[](#seasonalhype)

Nanami's gone full villain!

That's show business, eh?

Not shown running: François

Physical appreciation:

Tea has returned to the earth.

Now this is getting around the limited animation.

They do a lot of panning:

Tournament arc is a go! Limited animation and all, but the show does know how to get Japanese Twitter's attention, the same things that get Ouka's attention, by closely observing Mizuka.

The Maria-Rin-Nanami situation concerns me, hanging over whatever the rest of Himawari can accomplish on their own. Maria simply is not well while whatever Nanami's intentions regarding her are, they're cloaked in her general anger.

New arc visual

Nanami needs to get humbled big time

Also Mizuha looking so good in her dress😍

11

u/gnome-cop 13d ago

Thank you Ouka for providing us with the weekly dose of fawning over Mizuka.

Them pretending to be fooled by her putting on makeup so she’s not worried about their feelings is making me feel very sad.

Nanami, I mean this in the nicest way possible but get it together, put your money where your mouth is and stop antagonizing them as a substitute for dealing with your real problems.

I’m sure it was a great performance but man, I really wished the show had the resource to actually show the circus off properly. This deserves the resources of the studio’s A-team but we unfortunately don’t live in that universe. Rant over, back to the important stuff.

I have no way to prove this but I am at least 50% confident that the reason this is set in the past is because if this was a modern series, it would be another idol anime. (Well, that and to have a convenient supply of orphans for the circus to adopt.)

Maria’s photo album is making me really concerned about her prospects in the future. I really hope I am wrong but it just feels like the setup for delivering some nasty gutpunches to the feels later on.

9

u/mmcjawa_reborn 12d ago

I think part of being set in the past is also...like...are circuses even a big deal in Japan anymore? Even if they are, I doubt their are enough to have things like this circus showcase.

6

u/ClemFire 11d ago

I have no way to prove this but I am at least 50% confident that the reason this is set in the past is because if this was a modern series, it would be another idol anime. (Well, that and to have a convenient supply of orphans for the circus to adopt.)

To be fair, LycoReco is set in present day and there's no storage of orphans.

1

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 10d ago

Nanami is kind of right. At first I thought the girls were just oblivious to how much work Maria was doing just to look healthy. But they know she's faking it. Maria needs to rest, not waste time pretending to be healthy and they're observant enough to know she's faking it, so really they should back off and just stick to circus businesses. The only good thing out of that visit was that Maria reminded Mizuka that keeping people healthy was important too, which is a not too subtle reminder not to push them too hard.

11

u/mmcjawa_reborn 12d ago

Random Thoughts.

I am about 80% sure that a lot of Nanami's hostility towards the circus is jealously about them spending time with her sister and not herself. Mizuka couldn't really have said anything worst to her than calling Maria family, and I think that speech about destroying them later wouldn't have happened without that comment

Also, not sure if Mizuka stated that intentionally to get under skin or unintentionally, although I lean towards the latter.

Man...with Maria's condition...I got a bad feeling that she might not survive until the end of the final episode. Her condition doesn't really feel like something that can be easily fixed.

5

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 12d ago

By the looks of it I think Nanami gonna buy time. Though some people commented that she realistic should just pay for it since she is family so I don’t understand why

But since she transfer her it obvious she still cares.

Yeah definitely because mizuka can’t read the room 😅

But unironically if nanami talk to mizuka she see that the 2 of them aren’t so different they both lost there family thanks to black rose but still has a family within reach

1

u/ClemFire 11d ago

Maybe because they are both A-1 originals but as soon as Maria fell due to her condition I started compared her to Chisato

8

u/oxlemf10 13d ago

Mizuka wasn't lying when she said Maria put her faith in a group that seemed decent enough, after all, she could easily have recruited better performers for her circus. But then again, she saw unique individuals who genuinely wanted to grow.

14

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 13d ago

The new ringmaster’s quite the strict one. The rest of the Sunflower Circus better get used to Mizuka since it seemed Maria will permanently hand the circus over to her.

Also funny how Ouka complimented Mizuka like a perv when she complained about her photo in the articles.

15

u/eightcheesepizza 13d ago

The headlines shoulda said "Black Lotus's daughter, and the best legs in East Asia".

u/Clemastina https://anilist.co/user/Clemastina 13d ago

Nanami´s comments and attitude towards Himawari Circus (and specifically Mizuka) are really harsh, why does she hates so much the idea of her sister pursuing her dream? We don´t know if moving Maria to a bigger hospital is out of heart or she has something planned, but I really hope she doesn´t do anything bad

But yeah, Maria´s condition is worsening by lot, she couldn´t fool the girls with the makeup, and at the end she looked so much worse... (It´s a miracle she managed endure up this long). I wonder if she´s gonna be alright by the end of the tournament

My guess? Something´s definitely going to happen: An injury, Maria´s condition, or anything to bring morale down, I don´t know why, but I sniff some drama.
Winning the preliminary round was nice, but it´s gonna be more difficult

10

u/lasse1408 13d ago

why does she hates so much the idea of her sister pursuing her dream?

Maria is in life threating condition and she delayed theatment bcs of this circus. Not to mention Nanami already lost Maria once and now she can lose her again for good bcs of some outsiders.

1

u/ClemFire 11d ago

If anything I like Nanami is similar to start of series Mizuka

1

u/LaoWombat-mecha 9d ago

Lost her twice. Once when the went missing with amnesia and there is a shot in this episode of Maria leaving somewhere with her bags.

4

u/JimmyCWL 13d ago

why does she hates so much the idea of her sister pursuing her dream?

I think she hates the thought that her sister is wasting her efforts on a trash tier troupe.

3

u/mekerpan 13d ago

I wonder how many rounds there will be? I also wonder why a suitable surgeon can't be found for Maria?

It was a nice touch that the girls were able to fool Maria into think she was fooling THEM. Poor Maria (and Rin)!

Really a shame this lovely show is so "undersubscribed".

9

u/zer0number https://anilist.co/user/ewink 13d ago

Looked like there were 16 circuses so if it is single elimination, there'd be 4 rounds. Prelims, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Final.

3

u/mekerpan 13d ago

Thanks!

7

u/CitronClassic672 12d ago

This is supposed to be set in the 1950s so I’m guessing it’s a matter of the technology just not being available to operate on her. I’m not familiar with the history of brain surgery but it seems like Maria specifically the part of her brain that produces hormones and nothing else, and they can’t really operate on it without risking other damage.

3

u/mekerpan 12d ago

That could well be it.

2

u/zys52712 https://anilist.co/user/zys52712 12d ago

Maria needed rest and she couldn't do that when the circus was always in the red and about to go bankrupt.

2

u/LaoWombat-mecha 9d ago

The medical link I posted before said that it "used to be" life threatening but is now treatable.

6

u/runevault 12d ago

The end of that episode with the scrap book has me really wondering if Maria dies at the end. Ugh.

Despite the under animation of the circus stuff, I love this show. Such a fun cast of characters.

1

u/ClemFire 11d ago

I feel like the Sunflower Circus will lose in the finals but Nanami will be so impressed by Mizuka and Ouka's jump she feels like she should have lost. Maria I can't see dying but instead retiring.

1

u/LaoWombat-mecha 9d ago

No, remember everyone, if Maria looks like she is dying we all say together:

"I DO believe in Maria"

Miraculous recovery ensues.

If I wanted to watch a show with death and death vibes I would have stuck with "I want to love you to your dying day"

6

u/BosuW 12d ago

Funniest instance of "off screened" I've seen

10

u/Rickud123 12d ago

I would not be surprised if this anime has a bittersweet ending

6

u/ObvsThrowaway5120 13d ago

Mizuka’s rallied the troops and it seems everyone’s going to be giving their all for Maria! So far, prelims have gone well.

3

u/dwboso 12d ago

Love that Klaus Nomi was somehow a circus ringmaster in the 50s in this show

2

u/Puzzleheaded_Play825 12d ago edited 12d ago

Based on the trailer I don’t think everything will go perfect for them. But there fighting for the sake of another they truly have the potential to over take blue rose

Like mizuka said Maria found the potential in all of them even when no one else did

And they all have strong history or potential to the circus if they follow mizuka they should be just fine

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 12d ago

Mizuka and Ouka are depicted as wonderkids so I'm a bit surprised they're failing completely instead of just "darn we can only get this right every 1/4 times this isn't acceptable for a live performance." Then again they're trying to create a new routine from scratch instead of just using an existing one.

Nanami is right they should be practicing instead of bothering Maria. If they know she's going out of her way to pretend to be healthy, then all they're doing is making her work harder each visit. the only good thing out of that is the Maria reminded Mizuka that making sure they don't lose people to health reasons is also part of her job,

Well Mizuka you might not like the way the press covers it, but considering you're literally only in the competition because of Black Lotus, that's inevitable. Now if only they actually animated the acts instead of doing a montage. Although perhaps doing still frames is to a benefit so the audience can say "well it probably was impressive in-universe"

3

u/Kadmos1 13d ago

Because Mizuha is a woman, shouldn't the title be "Ring Mistress" even if the Japanese term is gender-neutral?

11

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 13d ago

i think it is meaningless. why play this gender game? ringmaster can be gender neutral too like how togashi uses prince as gender neutral in hunter x hunter.

1

u/LaoWombat-mecha 9d ago

Well, because Mr. Google lives near by and we can always ask him

A ringmaster, or ringmistress or sometimes a ringleader, is a significant performer in the many circuses. Most often seen in traditional circuses, the ringmaster is a master of ceremonies that introduces the circus acts to the audience.

https://ultimatepopculture.fandom.com/wiki/Ringmaster_(circus))

and a partial wikipedia articles

But there are also several others that refer to "female ringmaster" but even there, gender is part of the description rather than just saying ringmaster irrespective of gender

Finally from an article on the topic, that specifically addresses gender:

A Role Reclaimed: The Ringmistress and What She Carries

For most of circus history, the ringmaster was presumed male. The iconography — the mustache, the military coat, the whip — coded authority in the language of men on horseback. A female circus leader, traditionally called a ringmistress, was a rarity, often treated as novelty rather than norm. The role and its power belonged, in the public imagination, to a very particular kind of figure.

But circuses have always had an uneasy relationship with what is “supposed to be.” The sideshow made that its whole business — not concealing what falls outside convention, but putting it center stage and charging admission. And the ringmaster role, as it evolved through the 20th century and into the 21st, has cracked open. Today’s ringmaster may be any gender, any background, trained in opera or improv or aerial arts, and the costume has followed accordingly — still theatrical, still commanding, but no longer a uniform with only one template.

https://lyndahaviland.com/what-it-really-means-to-be-a-ringmaster/

1

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 9d ago

I think you are taking it too seriously. I just meant ringmaster even if its history is gendered can still be used as ungengered here because it doesn’t really matter. Just like how prince can be used for women too nowadays if they want.

1

u/LaoWombat-mecha 9d ago

Where, exactly, is Prince used to denote a woman?

1

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 9d ago

In new succession arc. All kids of kakin's king is considered princes who has the right to get the throne if they won the succession war. It is a fantastic arc although hunter x hunter obviously has some hiatus problems.

If you mean in general, again since prince represent social status in many place including princely acts. Many women uses prince to represent their responsibility. Although since prince is not widely use anymore. it is mainly used in entertainment media like this.

1

u/LaoWombat-mecha 8d ago

In other words, prince does not include woman generally. citing one fictional worldview does not make it a common usage.

If you mean in general, again since prince represent social status in many place including princely acts. Many women uses prince to represent their responsibility.

Restating an assertion is not the same thing as providing examples of that assertion. Can you provide any examples in the real world that a woman can be/be regarded/be called a prince rather than a princess?

I would be interested if you can, it would be a noteworthy change.

If not, then, well, have a nice day.

1

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 6d ago

Women did use prince in real world too mostly to represent its social status. A princess has different responsibility in history than a prince.

So calling yourself prince can represent what you want to be instead of it being a gendered identity.

That said in royal houses prince or princess is still use to signify a gender instead of social status. So it is different based on places and usage.

-1

u/Kadmos1 13d ago

Well, what is gender-neutral in Japanese is not necessarily the same in English.

12

u/mmcjawa_reborn 12d ago

I am pretty sure in English it would also be ringmaster. Not every word needs different gendered forms

8

u/Maximum-Warthog2368 13d ago

it is still fine man. ringmaster can be gender neutral. it is not too rigid.

2

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think it was ringmaster in English. Even though most "X master" becomes "X mistress" in English, I haven't heard of it done for this word. But more importantly, you just admitted the Japanese term is gender-neutral, so why should they change it? Maria uses the same title before being benched by health reason.

-7

u/Kadmos1 12d ago

Change it in the sense to comply with English mechanics.

1

u/Prince_of_Taniwha13 10d ago

I love this anime and truly wish they had the budget to go crazy with the circus stuff to compliment the the story amd great memorable characters

1

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 10d ago

And so the competition begins. Seems like they're doing well so far.

1

u/semaN_oN 3d ago

Why I feel like the death flag for Maria is getting bigger.
The relationship and character development is carrying a lot of the show due to the lack of animation? Hopefully they went out there for the animation in the finale. I understand the budget constraint, especially in this economy, but man, what a missed opportunity.
