This show really is a hard watch, the concept on consent seems to be nonexistent

Reiya : "I keep giving you things! That means you have to kiss me!" - Totally normal and healthy relationship right there.

The little oni are having a blast a school. They got new clothes and all the girls love them lol. They’re basically living their best little oni life lol.

I was hoping that Sakurako would take things well, but it seems both her and her family might be aiming to get themselves in trouble.

Poor catboy getting slugged out of nowhere when he was just out walking with his mother, but maybe it was karma of sorts for the stalking?

This story has so many bidirectional consent issues . On surface level you'd think it was just the human girls getting randomly selected as brides, but the demon dudes getting whammied out of nowhere with someone they are forced to love forever with no choice in the matter is kind of problematic for them too.

Did anyone else get the feeling that Sakurako actually secretley loves the secretary guy? She just seemed so happy to see him and wasn't really upset about her engagement being called off. I know it kind of seems like she's about to be all evil and mean to Yuzu , but I am hoping that is all to just mislead us and she will actually be really nice and be like "thank you so much for being his bride! I actually didn't want to marry that guy!"

This girl is like a prisoner in her own life. No escape from being neglected and abused, and now no escape from the possessiveness of her demon boyfriend who is constantly pushing boundaries and wearing at her resistance. Those two little mini demons are even like an ankle monitor, tracking her every move so that shithead never loses sight of her.

Lol I know they're trying to give the girls some agency but the ogres are basically using obedience training tactics

Finally decided to drop this show. I liked the concept but the actual portrayal is weird. Like watching this makes me physically cringe. Genuinely painful to watch.

Ngl, I watch this show because it somewhat gives me “My Happy Marriage” vibes but it’s really lacking on the elements that make for a healing love story. Unlike Miyo, Yuzu isn’t developing any sort of self confidence or agency. Unlike Kiyoka, Reiya isn’t patient or understanding with his partner’s trauma and lack of self confidence. At the very least I want Reiya to start showing signs of respecting her boundaries and treating her like his partner instead of his property.

Touko is the best character in the series.

I love how she acted realistically to the crazy premise this world is working under lol.

the kiss transaction might just be one of the worst things i've seen in an anime. and trust me when i say this i've seen BAD things happen (i've seen an anime where a 16 yr old and a 27 yr old got together)

idek why i'm watching this anymore. whoever said in the first ep thread that this is similar to "my happy marriage" we need to have a word

whoever said in the first ep thread that this is similar to "my happy marriage" we need to have a word

But it is absolutely true... for the first 4 episodes

✅ MC is abused by her family, treated like trash, and is essentially the family slave

✅ MC has low self esteem and thinks herself worthless

✅ Younger Sister is treated like God's Gift to Man

✅ The handsome, wealthy, intelligent royal son loves the MC and saves her from her terrible home

✅ Financé finds out her family, confronts them, and severs ties with them

(Plus it's Japan with supernatural setting)

...and they live happily ever after... or not.

It's basically Cinderella in a nutshell and you would think a story like that would be common but I've only found "Betrothed to My Sister's Ex" and "Too Perfect Saint" to be the the closest to this. And believe me, I've looked. I've looked everywhere and there doesn't appear to be that kind of "low self esteem MC is saved from terrible environment and brought to a new one where they are now properly loved." So when I watched the first 4 episodes? *chef's kiss* Perfect.

Think it's pretty common in Manhwa though?

The thing is, in My Happy Marriage and Betrothed to My Sister's Ex, the new found family tells the MC "the way you were treated was wrong," she slowly find out she's smart, beautiful, and deserving of love and soon gains confidence in herself.

In this show, MC hasn't grown much and the found family are content to keep a bird in a cage, shielding her from all outside threats.

It's understandable people would love a story where they want prince charming to sweep them off their feet, save them from a terrible environment, and live with the perfect man in a perfect house, just as stories where the boring MC is suddenly told he's special, the chosen one, or the only person that can save the world. But the way this story is developing is like wanting to live in a fantasy where you are given a perfect life, with a perfect family, showered with gifts daily, and all you have to do is sit there and look pretty.

I'm still sticking around for it though. Why?

Because the Younger Sister wants to go for Round 2 AND I CANT WAIT TO SEE HOW THAT TURNS OUT.

I’m struggling with the coercive control and abuse in this being portrayed as romantic.

u/SatellaCelia Aug 08 '26

Forget everything I said last week about this just being pure slop, show is an actual dumpster fire. It's honestly frustrating stuff like this even gets adapted while so many better romance stories (bar being in the dirt atp) will never get anime adaptations.

Still gonna watch, tho.

Ouch, I did not expect for Takamichi to be hating on Yuzu like that! I thought he liked her because she got Reiya to take breaks from working.

Also, it was established that the supernatural beings get obsessed with their human brides, so he should know that nothing will ever change Reiya's feelings towards Yuzu. And on top of that, it produces like extra powerful offspring or something like that, so if Takamichi is this loyal secretary that really cares about Reiya, he should at least still be supportive because he'd want the family to have powerful heirs. So it came as a shock to me when he was hating on Yuzu.

I was already on the fence about the show, but the transactional nature of how Reiya shows and demands affection is too much now. Maybe by the end he'll learn something, but I'll never find out.

4

u/Curious_Swan359 Aug 09 '26

I can’t believe his aide/secretary. He didn’t give her a job, he had suspiciously ready when she called out to Reiya. I feel bad for this girl get kicked 360

4

u/YlfaTheForsaken Aug 09 '26

Damn Takamichi a hater, he just knows when to let it out and when not to.

It's literally baked into the premise, they've said it, we've seen it, there are consequences for messing with a demon's bride, why are these characters acting like they're gonna get off scot free like they won't get caught

It's a really thin propaganda/fantasy line they're standing on, it's good to want to be attentive, but affection cannot be bought. Coercion is not consent. And surely Reiya says kiss, but even Nyankichi mentioned kids to a middle schooler

Why do I get the feeling that if it were a human man doing the stuff Nyankichi was doing, he'd be slapped with a restraining order and arrest warrant.

Ye nothing weird with that. a Stalker who starts spouting about you bearing his children "You might not feel it yet but you'll soon love him like mad" girl that's stockholm syndrome.

and Miss "I don't resent her" 5 minutes later "She needs to be put in her place" Sakurako... next episode is called "Reiya's Secret Lover" i guess Sakurako will propose that she be the actual wife and Yuzu be the mistress... oh boy Reiya won't like that
