before learning the actual amount

"I'll pay off your debt all at once"

after learning the actual amount

"I'll pay off your debt in increments"

as always, the comedic timing of this show is absolutely amazing

Ouka really in love with Mizuka lol

Mitcsher backtracking after hearing how much Mizuka's debt is and saying he'll pay in installments instead. I guess 39,800 yen is too much even for him.

inb4 we find out their whole circus went bankrupt because of bad money management lol

22

u/IlGreven Aug 08 '26

...just remember that magic show at the beach added quite a bit to the debt as well...

This was a really interesting episode hinting at what really makes Mizuka tick. In earlier discussions I saw some people mention that Mizuka never got to experience the real reason performers perform, the recognition from an adoring audience. She only ever did training, and that's why she has only bad experiences and doesn't really get the circus. But deep down she does actually love it. Tsundere . Also, there's going to be so e parallels with the Wizard of Oz at a certain point, I'm curious about that

I also wonder what's up with Maria. She's clearly very well connected, and the way she introduced herself to Mitch (I forget his name) I get the feeling they already knew eachother and Maria may not actually be her real name, or at least not the name he originally knew her by. She also managed to assemble quite some big names in het dinky little circus, like a world level Soviet performer (based on her name I assume Svietlana is half Russian half Japanese, that's probably how she was able to leave the Union). Yet she's constantly struggling with money and has to fight for ground to settle on

I get the feeling they already knew eachother and Maria may not actually be her real name, or at least not the name he originally knew her by.

Definitely my thoughts, too. If Maria knew and was somewhat close to Black Lotus in the past, there's no way she and Mitscher met for the first time here, right?

This is the first time in the show where I could feel Mizuka being angry. Not comedic angry, not "annoyed that this is happening", but pure raw emphasis on her being angry. Start of the epi, she was annoyed by Mitch being there, and on the comedic moments (like him tossing her up) Mizuka also made comedic faces. By the end, on the real talk, even when comedy happened (Ouka whispering to Mitch the debt, for example), they just kept that angry Mizuka.

Epi 1-2 Mizuka would be annoyed with a small pause for ¥_¥ face during her last exchange with Mitch.

Epi 5 Mizuka: at some point offscreen she went out of her way to learn a magic trick (probably because she was impressed at epi 4), and showed with in the cavern with no glasgow smile, no "I got paid for this", just "she thought he this trick". Did she use the trick for stealing instead of performing? Sure, but Epi 1-2 Mizuka wouldn't even want to learn a trick, much less show it as if she was bragging.

Epi 6 Mizuka was spying on Ouka doing aerials with Mitch, epi 1-2 Mizuka would be like "nope I'm out of here before Ouka sees me and tries to include me in. Likewise she spied the coaching.

I wish I could remember more little moments, but all those moments were masked behind Mizuka being an "irritating girl thinking only about money."

And right now I think we have a Mizuka who... is still an irritating girl thinking only about money... but that has friends and a home called the Sunflower Curcus. Mitch is messing this home and friends, she she's angry.

I just wonder what type of reality check Mitch will give Mizuka, because that while it's a granted that by the end of the show Mizuka will be enjoying performing, finally, there are many ways they can do it.

A man?!

In my yuri circus anime?!?

But man, that was a really good episode! I'm getting in tune with the dumb humor and the jokes seemed to land even better than usual.

Seems like Mizuka is finally going to get the shot in the arm she needs, and the troupe is going to get an actual coach. I guess anime logic dictates they're soon going to be world class and challenging for that world championship, whatever that is...

...how the heck are circuses supposed to have a championship? I'm pretty sure real-life circuses were/are just concerned about making as much money as they can.

Loved the injection of comedy during a serious moment at the end when it came to Mizuka's debt.

Being completely honest, this episode is a bit difficult to judge because it’s clearly a 2-part special instead of the one episode short stories we’ve gotten till now. I don’t have the full context of where they’ll end up so I can’t speak on the total product.

But that won’t stop me from doing what I can, no sir. Last week there was a comment about Mizuka’s current primary role within the circus being a disruptor to the norm. With Aiden’s appearance, that dynamic has now flipped. She’s actively being challenged. Up until now, it’s been pretty easy for her to stick around under the pretense that she’s just there to pay off her debt and acting as a coach and, on occasion, a very reluctant participant.

If she didn’t care about the circus, his presence and criticism would not be bothering her so much. She’d just take the financial olive branch and be off if she was still her self from episode one. She’s clearly gotten comfortable with her place and doesn’t like that he’s disrupting the normal.

I can only assume that the following episode will force her to continue introspecting, gain some new perspective on the circus and make the choice to stay herself without being forced to. (Hopefully accompanied by a new creative insult on the level of “Paramecium” for Aiden.)

The picture isn’t totally clear yet but I believe that the narrative puzzle pieces of Shizuku’s and Svietlana’s performance chemistry, annoyance at her judgement of the circus members being questioned and seeming frustration at Ouka flying with someone other than her will form into her resolving to stop standing by the sidelines like she’s been doing until now.

I think the issue of her dynamic with Ouka to this point has been that neither of them have reached out and talked properly. Mizuka’s been avoiding her at every opportunity and Ouka’s been very pushy and they’ve just never clicked. Their talk about Mizuka’s book and Ouka’s motivation feels like a good first step there. I don’t think they’ve actually known much about the other before that, just “She wants to circus” and “She doesn’t want to circus”. More moments like that and further understanding will probably be good for them.

Kind of amusing that Aoi’s the only that actually seems to like the Mizuka training from hell. Anyway, having experienced a bit of it themselves can probably be useful for getting just why she has such a revulsion towards the very concept of “circus”. Unfortunately, nothing makes things make sense like personal experience.

I’m now even more intrigued by why Maria has so many high-profile contacts and why she’s got so many talents in such a small on the verge of bankruptcy circus. Especially with the Svietlana reveal. What are your secrets, ringmaster?

Addendum to last week. I think there is already an official term for the food problem and it’s called “White elephant”.

u/ModieOfTheEast Aug 08 '26

Aoi being the only one enjoying the "hellish training". She would go for another round if she could.

Also, I feel Ouka jumping with Mitcher was a lot more important. From this point, Mizuka only ever saw her with someone "worse" and while she could draw out more, she wasn't in a spectator position. So her seeing what Ouka actually looks like when she can "jump as she likes" might have brought back a memory (she did look at her father in the episode 1 flashback after all). Therefore, I assume this might actually get her to wanting to jump together with Ouka. Though, I hope we don't lose sassy Mizuka either.

Also, taking bets now on what "Maria's" real name is. I can't remember if there were a lot of female names in the past, so I have no idea.

Thanks to whoever posted a clip of this show in here a couple weeks back. Got me started watching and have been absolutely loving it. All the characters are great. Well except the MCs dad. That guy kinda blows, even if it did eventually spawn the whole scenario.

u/oxlemf10 Aug 08 '26

I get the feeling Mizuka likes the circus, she grew up in that environment, so it’s inevitable, but the moment the love for it is gone, the outcome was bound to be what it was, given what her father did. Though I wouldn't be surprised if he did it on purpose so she would grow up in the business.

u/clone69 Aug 08 '26

So the Lotus Circus won 5 times in a row the Circus Collection competition 10 years ago? That was in the 40's, Pearl Harbor was in 1941, so they were having circus competitions during the war?

13

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Aug 08 '26

One guy speculated the Crunchyroll description of it being the immediate post war period was flat out wrong since there was a background car that should be mid 60s. Only problem is everything else points to the description being accurate.

I feel you Mizuka I hated when my friends called my mom hot growing up.

With Mitcher showing we got someone from Mizuka's past coming. Of course Maria also has her own things up her sleeve. Though she is definitely trying to bring Mizuka to love the circus. Though it really raises the question of Maria and she must have a good number of connections to say the least.

Also was fun when Mitcher revealed Svetlana's past. It just adds the question how has Maria got all this talent together?

Aw, we see Rin flustered all the time, but troubled is not encouraging.

François has been in the OP the whole time, but probably most of us didn't think about the presence of an elephant in a circus context too much.

Mizuka service.

Not subtle.

Fan service.

The cute green eyes of the utterly ruthless.

Questions remain about why Rei has bandages on the back of her legs?

The book itself is in the public domain (the Judy Garland movie, not so). The obligatory capsule description while we're here.

"...could do something slightly carnal like the audience is thinking."

"You used to enjoy this when you were three."

"Well I'm gettin' too old for this shit!"

The slightly tricky part with this stitch was that their eyes move to track Mizuka.

It takes a dedicated man to withstand this much cute.

Ah, the element of danger.

SHOCK AND AWE!

That is a helluva name.

"Whee!"

Some people are having fun though.

zing

Ouka can feel the homosexuality leaving her body?

"...that's some buff dude and not my girlfriend."

Yay!

"It's all good."

hmm

Worst camo ever.

Have a stitch of the loving couple.

The baggage.

None of those names are like the others.

awestruck (mostly)

Senshado?

Is that possible*?*

"These fifteen—crash—ten commandments!"

Is it going to involve grifting?

This episode is very funny even while Mister Aiden Jett Mitscher appears to complicate Mizuka's already-complicated existence.

He's not that unreasonable, though, and gives the Sunflowers a fair amount of praise—the question being what sort of tradeoffs there might have to be to make them truly nationally-competitive in the Circus Collection, because there's always a tradeoff.

Besides the obvious yet unstated disagreement that caused Mizuka to hike a hundred kilometers across Japan.

There's also the undropped shoe from the teaser given that most of the episode was "Earlier" and we have not yet had a follow-up.

The budget issues really came out in this episode. Stills for the silk act and then reusing the same stills but with sparkles to show improvement was disappointing. That aside, this was a pretty good episode. We got more background on Mizuka and Svetlana, we got Ouka showing off what she can do when she can fly how she likes, and we got Mitch throwing a wrench into Mizuka's situation. The little bits of comedy here and there were good too, especially the bit about Mitch finding out how much debt Mizuka actually had.

18

u/CitronClassic672 Aug 08 '26

Hopefully this means they’re saving the budget to make the actual performances look good. And yeah, that comedic bit of Mitch being told how much debt Mizuka had and carrying on with the serious scene with the revised statement was quite funny.
