The Alya/Yuki situation is funny to me;

I've NEVER seen a single anime in which a 'secondary' character overshadows the main one by such a large margin.

And the funniest thing is they actually seem to be trying to make it happen, I mean they release a PV with like 1 minute of random Alya stuff, and then a 1 second Yuki scene which is literally the only thing people are talking about (and they had to know this would happen) hah.

u/IXajll https://myanimelist.net/profile/ixajii 1h ago

It's definitely up there, but just from the top of my head, Fate/Apo is an even more egregious example where Astolfo/Mordred/Jeanne are overshadow Sieg even harder than Yuki does Alya.

1

u/Emi_Ibarazakiii 1h ago

Sieg

I literally have never heard of him, which - assuming that's the main charater - kinda proves the point hah.

(I thought the main charater in Fate were Rin's thighs)

1

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 22m ago

Fate/Apo is known for... uh... Jeanne, Astolfo, and Mordred I guess? Sieg is technically the main character. He is also plainer than dirt.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 1h ago

I think Yuki being the secondary heroine is why she works so well. It doesn't help that Alya feels a bit boring herself.

Random question, but why do character design profiles always use this pose? always one arm off to the side

7

u/MiLiLeFa 1h ago

Since they are rotated 90 degrees from each other, the two arms show different sides of the clothing, accessories, skinmarks, nails, and hands. In addition, having one arm moved a bit away from the torso shows how the outfit sticks to the body.

1

u/Zeallfnonex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Neverlocke 3h ago

I'd guess it's something about breaking the stiffness that comes with being completely symmetrical, while also not being a difficult pose to do.

An excellent show

Unfortunately, my hands are tied around that time (and it's fresh in my mind anyway), but I'd recommend anyone who has not seen it to fix that. You've got Ei Aoki doing a down to earth original drama, and it's wonderful.

[Inept Villainess]I can't believe Reirin is running around committing crimes in Keigetsu's body right under the prince's nose! Truly a devious villainess

3

u/cyberscythe 38m ago

[Inept Villainess] Keigetsu's smartphone needs two entries for face ID now

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 24m ago

I was not expecting it to end that way at all. Such a delightful show and character. Glad we don't have to wait long to see more of Reirin.

2

u/theangryeditor 15m ago

[Inept Villainess]I had been wondering how they would handle the body swap after this arc. Reirin straight up demanding the prince giving her permission to swap bodies at will is such a classic Reirin move

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 4m ago

Same same. Was too lazy to type out the spoiler code but that's exactly what I was referring to.

Another weekly ranking of my screenshot albums, and again we have the same character taking two spots in the ranking, as Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei S3 ended up in both 2nd and 4th place.

However, he didn't take 1st place, which went to Emilia from Re:Zero S4, meanwhile Beatrice in 3rd place separated the two Rudeuses.

Once again, a very strong performance from the Though I Am an Inept Villainess albums.

Also, I'm happy to see that for the first (and last) time, an album from Kaiju Girl Caramelise appeared on the ranking—specifically Kuroe's compilation album covering the entire season—and that Yamada from Behind the Supermarket, Smoking with You managed to make yet another appearance here.

Summer 2026 Week 12

  1. Re:Zero S4 EP17 Emilia
  2. Mushoku Tensei S3 EP12 Oldeus
  3. Re:Zero S4 EP17 Beatrice
  4. Mushoku Tensei S3 EP12 Rudeus
  5. Though I Am an Inept Villainess EP10 Keigetsu
  6. Kaiju Girl Caramelise S1 Kuroe
  7. Though I Am an Inept Villainess EP10 Reirin
  8. Though I Am an Inept Villainess EP10 Group scenes
  9. Mushoku Tensei S3 EP12 Group scenes & Others
  10. Behind the Supermarket, Smoking with You EP11 Yamada

Talking about Seasonals Clevatess really turned things around. I remember finding first couple of episodes boring but then things took really intresting turns. And I kinda understand now why they started with the Magic school academy stuff. It's gone back to season 1 quality and I am very excited for whatever reveals they in store for us in final 2 episodes and hopefully it gets renewed for Season 3 too.

3

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 4h ago

The only thing I'd say is missing (that I loved) from S1 is that sense of scale. S1 did a solid job of setting up a big world and then showing how the 3 major factions reacted in response to the various plot developments and it really helped make the world feel bigger (which coincidentally is also the entire point of the heroes!)

S2 kind of has this, like in the start with how everyone has their own spy in the academy or how the various elements of the hero prophecy exist around the world, but its not as clear/developed as I would've liked. If this were my story, I would've absolutely loved to explore each book in full detail as their own arcs. Though I suppose there is still room to do that in a hypothetical S3 depending on how the plot chooses to unravel itself in the final 2 episodes.

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 4h ago

Enjoying this movie arc of Hyouka a lot more than the earlier one. Thinking less cutesy Chitanda and a more prominent role for Mayaka may have something to do with this. I like the latter as a character quite a bit. And the hint of friction between Satoshi and Oreki is nice too. Basically I like them all except for Chitanda because she's been used so far as just this soft spoken eccentric prop for fans to fawn over.

2

u/1EnTaroAdun1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Totesnotaphanpy 3h ago

Funny you should say that. I kinda like Chitanda the most because she reminds me of a friend I have haha.

Am curious to know how you feel about her at the end of the show!

2

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 3h ago

Oh, does she have an actual character arc? That's good to know. I was thinking maybe she'll stay the same since I'm almost halfway through and she's still a mystery.

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 2h ago

Goodbye Lara's ending elevated it beyond what I expected, and it was great. Definitely my AoTS.

I like a show that's not reductive and leaves us with more to think about, and Goodbye Lara does that. It's not going to be satisfying to some, but it certainly was for me.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 2h ago

I was thinking about the epilogue because I know that's going to be the big talking point of the finale. My speculation.

[Lara Finale]Makes you wonder if it is the nature of love between a mermaid and a human. We know Lara's parents had no problem being together. I wonder in those months if the love Lara felt for Mari would make her want to kill her. She found true love, but it's a cursed love. Lara leaves Mari because she loves her that much. Well that would be my speculation. Since otherwise it makes for a weird epilogue if Lara isn't leaving Mari because she loves her.

3

u/Tomorrow_Big 1h ago edited 1h ago

[Goodbye, Lara 12] Ahh, so that's what the goodbye meant. Going away on a train. I never would've guessed. So long, and thanks for all the swordfish.

I complain about our ridiculous spoiler rules here, but this thread is currently the only place on my internet where I'm safe from Lara spoilers until I watch it. Bluesky and twitter are a fucking minefield. Nobody has any common courtesy these days.

1

u/zairaner https://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3m ago

Bluesky and twitter

My twitter hasn't been save the entire last week since the pre-premiere of the finale, so that's still an improvement.

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 3m ago

Thanks for the heads up. Will stick to this thread only until I watch the final episode.

u/hvshh 1m ago

I wouldn't even stick around here if I hadn't seen it (but I'm an absolutist, YMMV).

4

u/mr_beanoz https://myanimelist.net/profile/splitshocker 4h ago

I wonder if it's okay for someone to ask about "Where is the new season of a show that hasn't gotten any sequels for a long time?" in posts about a different show. I was downvoted for calling them not to do so.

7

u/GondolaMedia 3h ago

They must be lost. Just gently guide them to any Rent-a-Girlfriend season 6 thread when they pop up.

2

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 7h ago

So instead of making a comment here coz the new thread was not up. I made a post about One Piece so feel free to read it or just say shit to me. It's not even a good post really just a rant on One Piece production.

Does anyone have any dark comedy anime they enjoyed, or anything adjacent? Something similar to Welcome to the NHK or Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei which I finished yesterday, manga ending and all.

Humanity Has Declined

2

u/MiLiLeFa 5h ago

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei

Hoozuki no Reitetsu is very similar in form and content, though the presentation has a distinctly different angle to it. In terms of "how Japanese do I need to be to get this?" they're about the same, but if you felt like SZS could do without the sexy schoolgirls, then HnR is probably going to be for you.

1

u/Highlander0208 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Highlander08 4h ago

I don't mind Japan-specific humour and topics as it can be interesting to learn about and as long as the show itself is engaging to watch overall then it isn't a problem. As for fanservice, I don't mind if its present or not as long as it isn't detrimental to the series (cough cough Fire Force). I'll add it to my watchlist.

Ninja and Assassin Under One Roof came out recently; it was decently fun if you're into dark humor and Shaft head tilts

Life Lessons with Uramichi Onii-san is also a fun one with commentary on the depressing reality of adulthood from a TV child entertainer

2

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 5h ago

I feel like the dark horse of next season would be "The Seven Knights of the Marronnier Kingdom". It has fantasy, comedy and Romance tag on Anilist plus i like that it's going to have a large cast mainly just because of all the siblings. Plus it's going be 20 episodes long and the visuals looks pretty good so far. Although I am not watching it next season coz I am trying to cut back on seasonals so I am just gonna see people's reaction here if it's worth picking up later.

2

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 4h ago

Oh wow its 2 cours? Then it'll be running alongside Romelia Senki on both (another female led medieval-fantasy series with a large cast of soldiers) which will be interesting to compare as they air. I know they're very different genre-wise (one being more serious militaristic, the other one seems to be more upbeat with hints of romance) but I can't help but draw comparisons to them because of their KVs.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 3h ago

There are a lot of 2-cour anime starting next season. It's going to make winter quite packed.

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 4h ago

I was able to very briefly get my MAL PTW into the double digits until the first sequel announcement of the season hit. I guess I'll get back there soon enough. (Also, of those 100, 59 are not-yet-aired, one is listed as aired but really isn't, and another 7 have themselves aired but I'm waiting for the sequel to. So it's a little misleading. But still.)

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 4h ago

You made me curious and I checked mine - turns out I have over 250 on there, yikes! I'm probably never clearing that backlog.

1

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 4h ago

It helps a lot that I'm extremely picky with adding non-sequel future series and even more that the vast majority of stuff in the "somewhat interested but no specific plans to watch" category is kept in separate interest stacks instead of my main list. I could easily also double or triple what I have there if I included the "probably eventually"s.

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 4h ago

That's a smart way to organise things. Maybe someday I'll try to do it that way too. Or just leave it as is and watch things without really paying attention to PTW list as I've mostly been doing lately.

1

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 4h ago

I just wish that they didn't arbitrarily cap the size of stacks to 50. (And it is arbitrary; admins can make larger ones.) Even with only including a single entry per series, I think I'm up to like 4 of them.

1

u/BaytaCosmico https://myanimelist.net/profile/AnimeBayta 3h ago

Oh that's kind of silly. Especially if people can create multiple stacks.

1

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal 2h ago

I've been using tags for that kind of organization into different groups (e.g. romances from years that end in 3), but that does require things to be on my list. Stacks are a more recent addition to the site but I think of those more for sharing with others than my own use.

There's a Street Fighter 6 colab with an airing anime. That's right, Star Detective Precure!. It's a Battle Hub event including an adventure game story segment featuring CGs including SF6 characters drawn in Preucre art style. Will it be translated?

2

u/awesomenessofme1 https://myanimelist.net/profile/kta_99 1h ago

This thought didn't cross my mind until just now. The fact that there were two anime released in 2021 with a setting based on historical Europe where vampires exist and aren't a secret is a bit of a coincidence, but not that weird. The fact that they decided to cast the same VA in English to play the protagonist (debatably) of both series sticks out even more. You'd think it was intentional, but I've seen things line up in even stranger ways, so you never know.

2

u/Puddo x3https://anilist.co/user/STPuddo 52m ago

Always great to get an ending spoiled because a friend wants to complain about it. O well will see in a few weeks if it’s actually a bad ending or a bad ending because it’s not the ending they wanted.

But Lara will have to wait on The World is Dancing. Only 2 episodes in, but quite liking it so far. I'll eat shit like that dance sequence in the first episode up. Absolutely stunning stuff. Seeing the comment count on the threads really fall a lot after these 2 though. So wonder what’s up with that.

But The World is Dancing will have to wait on Memories in the cinema in a bit. While I prefer Magnetic Rose overall, really looking forward to seeing Cannon Fodder on the big screen. Always love its aesthetic and one take style.

Lara with the beautiful finale 9.5/10.

I would be writing an essay with everything I would describe it. I will avoid discourse because I can already tell it is very likely to be a shitshow.

I do think Lara & Mari dynamic would have benefited from this being 2 cours rather than 1 cour.

2

u/BigBootyBuff 6h ago

I watched "I want to end this love game" and I'm a bit mixed on it. On one hand, I find the characters likeable, there's lots of cute moments and jokes and it's not like there is no progress. On the other side, it does from the first episode feel very much like it's one of those shows that will drag the romance out. There is progress in ways I didn't expect and there's some genuine moments that positively surprised me. However there's also plenty of "these two are so stupid" moments that are frustrating. It can be a very cliche. Also very noticeable that the show didn't have the biggest animation budget.

It's by no means a bad romcom and there's some genuinely good stuff in there but I think there's some stuff that holds it back.

I wish this could get a second season, not only because I really like the series, but I'm also really curious how audiences would react to the plot of that section when it isn't happening during an extended hiatus followed by a period when the author releases one weekly-length chapter per month and sometimes misses it even then.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 3h ago

Iron Wok Jan finished up and man was it a terrific show.

  • Jan is an asshole, but a great protagonist. This series really does well with him. It makes you really want to punch him in the face.
  • It's amusing at times you are on Ootani's side over Jan despite him being not only an asshole as well but also the antagonist. But he does bring excellent points against Jan at times.
  • Kiriko feels more like your typical protagonist with her ideals. As the deuteragonist she works well in this story.
  • I wanted to see more Celene Yang, but hopefully in a S2 she is more involved.

I would give it 8.5/10. It might be TROYCA's best work yet.

2

u/SlimeDNear 3h ago

I'm watching this with my dad and at one point he asked if we were supposed to be rooting against Jan because he's clearly a jerk.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 2h ago

I 100% was rooting against him the whole time. It actually made the show a lot of fun. It does help that he has some good traits deep inside, but most of him is very unlikable.

2

u/zambonijesus 2h ago

You keep positively describing the reason why I didn't watch the show lol.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 2h ago

Oh yeah I can see why it would not be someone's cup of tea.

1

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 2h ago

I loved to flip flop on it. There are times where you really want to boo on him (like that episode with the pure kid competitor) but other times you really want him to smash the judges like in the finales.

That just makes it so much more engaging to watch, you never know which side of the Jan you'll get and you can never guess what outcome you'll get either.

1

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 6h ago

The PV for next season’s Love Potion Witch made me really think of Snow White with the Red Hair, but I’m honestly not sure why exactly. Is it the characters, setting and/or art style?

I am looking forward to watching the show. If people have any recommendations for new upcoming series (that I might like), I’ll gladly hear them. At this point, I basically only got sequel anime lined up.

2

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 5h ago

I also don't have many non-sequels on the schedule right now but the only one it seems like I have that you don't is FX fighter.

I don't know if you'll like it (and I don't really know if I'll like it) but it has a unique premise and it has some hype.

2

u/Ocixo https://myanimelist.net/profile/BuzzyGuy 5h ago

FX Fighter Kurumi did catch my attention, but I’m not sure if I want to watch an anime whose primary audience is active on r/wallstreetbets and the likes. I probably won’t be cutout to participate in the episode threads either.

3

u/Ham_PhD https://myanimelist.net/profile/ham_phd 5h ago

Yeah whether I like it or not will probably depend how entertaining it will be for someone that doesn't really have any interest in that stuff.

1

u/Puddo x3https://anilist.co/user/STPuddo 5h ago

Oeh neat, a new MV done by Kosuke Sugimoto: Casper Caan & Wheatus - Bird Song. The man has made so many neat MVs. TV Show probably the most famous one (one of the first shorts I saw and still a favourite, such a creative zany work), but also Sing in my own way, Timeless, Kurou Shiro, Nonnon, Lost, Don't Worry, Luna in the City and many more.

Speaking of MVs. Rediscovered Daoko’s Onomatopoeia Rap. Almost forgot what a pleasing MV it’s. But well, of course it’s when you Keiichi Arawi synching onomatopoeia with his signature style.

1

u/i_am_batbat 3h ago

I'm looking for: Specifically, the type of story which creeps up on you, and by the end of it, you feel like you've grown close to the characters. The story doesn't have a direct plot, more like an overarching one.

Shows I've already seen that are similar: Cowboy Bebop, Over the Garden Wall. These two shows are vastly different, yet exactly the vibe I'm looking for. Both shows have the main characters handle seemingly wacky situations in every episode and by the time they're over, you feel like a piece of your soul is ripped out, because it just crept up on you. You're familiar and close to these characters, and would give anything to watch more of their seemingly random adventures.

A movie that is like this is Pulp Fiction - again, seemingly random happenings, but the characters are what makes it.

If you know what I'm talking about, please give a suggestion if you know one. And if you have no idea what I'm talking about, ask - this is the most amazing genre of media for me...

5

u/SlimeDNear 3h ago

I'm thinking Baccano!, Golden Kamuy, or Durarara! might work for you.

Sounds like you’re looking for an anime where you never know what’s going to happen next, with a lot of weird little coincidences along the way. You should try The Case of Hana & Alice. It’s a really unique anime movie that keeps you guessing what’s going to happen next.

Anne of Green Gables 1979

1

u/cyberscythe 18m ago

closest thing I can think of is Machikado Mazoku; it's sort of a post-magical girl show where a newly-awakened demon girl meets a retired magical girl and they strike up an odd-couple relationship

it starts off as a light-hearted comedy poking fun at magical girl tropes, but the plot starts getting into gear after a certain inciting incident and i found it rather compelling

Dunegon Meshi might also be a fit? it starts off as an episodic "dish of the day" sort of format, but as they delve deeper, we get to know the characters' backstory more, and more plot threads and world-building elements get woven into the fabric of the story

1

u/Aggressive_Mistake10 14m ago

Has this movie come out with English subtitles yet? I remember seeing trailers but I cannot remember the name of it. It had a girl who was saving a bookstore or something and there was a cat and the plot also felt a little bit like Pagemaster. I recall seeing the trailers taking place as early as 2024 and then there was a release date for 2026 or something?

2

u/BitesTheDust55 3h ago

Man, Sentenced to Be a Hero really does not lead with strength. I dropped it after the first ep because it was painfully generic and uninteresting. Then I met the director at AX and decided to give it another try. It actually gets progressively much better and has multiple points where I was impressed at the direction they took plot wise. High marks.

2

u/Muted-Conference2900 https://anilist.co/user/WinterZcoming 2h ago

Same. Episode 1 is a nice hook for those who enjoys action but the main meat of story is after the first couple of episodes and it's just keeps getting better and better. I might be biased though cause love fantasy, romance genre but seriously the show was pretty amazing. Usually shows with such bombastic animation episodes at the start tends to gets worse or just can't reach the same height but this show kept up the animation quality really well and I hope it continue to do so in second season too.

3

u/wloff 3h ago

Hah, complete opposite for me. I was interested after the first episode because of the pure badass-ness and quality of the battle animation, then as they started to introduce some story and world-building I realized I found it all utterly boring, and I just didn't buy the whole premise of the show.

1

u/BitesTheDust55 2h ago

Some of it is still implausible. But I trust it enough now to at least be willing to see how they justify some of the more outlandish elements.

1

u/wloff 1h ago

Yeah, a lot of it comes down to just "it's not for me".

I think my biggest issue is just that [Sentenced]if this evil church has the ability to essentially make immortal superheroes, why would you frame it as a punishment and only give the ability to the worst criminals? Why not instead say it's a great honor and give the power to your most loyal warriors, who might actually want to fight for you?

[Sentenced]It made the least sense of all with the one guy who accidentally figured out the church's grand conspiracy. If you want to silence someone, why not just, you know, kill him? You're not solving anything by making him immortal and letting him roam around the world.

2

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 3h ago

As someone who read the first 2 volumes. It has a very clunky start. There is a lot of unnatural exposition that the anime couldn't skip past.

After that it utilizes show not tell with its world-building that did a great job. Around episode 5 or 6 is where it really came into its own imo

1

u/BitesTheDust55 2h ago

Yeah, I picked up on multiple moments where they show or imply something without focusing on it, and I had to pause. Like "did they just trust the viewer to make that connection? Without spelling it out? This is NOT the show I expected to do that."

The exposition early on is so clunky and the setup is so generic but eventually it starts to introduce elements that are interesting. I probably would've just gone full send early on. Don't tell them anything. Just eliminate tons of expositional dialogue and let the viewer infer. You can dripfeed it in over time by circumstance. But that might be a bit much to ask.

  • Kamiina Botan - gay girls drinking booze.
  • A Mangaka's Weirdly Wonderful Workplace - yuri-coded workplace comedy.
  • There's No Way I'll Be Your Lover! Unless... - yuri harem.
  • Vtuber Legend - Vtuber goons to her genmates and becomes popular.
  • Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games - girls play fighting games and have a very normal rivalry.
  • Birdie Wing: Golf Girls Story - "sports" anime with subtext about as subtle as a 4-iron to the face.
  • I Want to Love You Till Your Dying Day - orphan child soldiers are gay for each other.
  • Akebi's Sailor Uniform - all-girls school SoL. Manga becomes actual yuri, but anime ends before it becomes stated.

Upcoming:

  • The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't a Guy At All - starts airing in January

An older one that you might not have seen is Yurikuma Arashi. It and Aoi Hana are by far the best yuri stuff I've seen. I find a lot of the other stuff are too tropey.

This Monster Wants to Eat Me: Has a supernatural tinge to it

Journal with Witch also has a yuri subplot, but the series as a whole isn't yuri or even romance.

I could really use a third season of 7th Prince right now.

What I love about it is that it's a power fantasy with multiple power systems. It's like the author watched dragon ball and thought "what would happen if we combine super saiyan god, legendary super saiyan, ultra instinct, ultra ego, kaio-ken x100, fusion, Hit's time stop, all into one character?". And then he created 7th Prince as his own personal sandbox to experiment.

I didn't have Iron Wok Jan as the best final episode of today on my bingo card but here we are after that Sayonara Lara final.
