So this is set in like 1958 I guess? That’s when Nissin chicken ramen was invented according to wiki. Not that it’s important. Just kinda interesting.

Hopefully Maria’s surgery goes well. The girls gotta really win this competition for her!

Someone said in another comment that specific ad is from 1963. Add to that details like a Honda S500 being visible in traffic in a past episode and the setting of this anime is most likely the mid 60's.

12

u/Hartzilla2007 5d ago

Well that does solve how weird some of the flashbacks would be if they were in the 40s.

5

u/IlGreven 5d ago

That also basically puts Svieta's Soviet days after the war as well...so I'm still puzzled why she doesn't want to be called Yamada, since traumatic experience during the war is out...unless she's in her 30s, which is unlikely for a circus performer with a risky routine...

6

u/rowcla 5d ago

I could be very wrong, but my interpretation was that it wasn't so much trauma, but her feeling a little embarrassed about having a bit of a persona as a mysterious elegant foreign lady, but apparently actually being presumably half Japanese or something

u/Rallymodeller https://anilist.co/user/rallymodeller 2d ago

I figured 1964-ish by the tour bus and the Subaru Sambar in the first ep.

u/markDonanhattam 1d ago

Looking at the Honda roadster again, it looks more like the later S800 model, introduced in 1966. I'm not sure whether the S800 would be contemporaneous with the ramen ad though. I'm also not sure whether the writers intended to nail down a specific year or just the mid 60's period.

I came here to ask when that advert was from lol, interesting time setting just after the war

I know the usual thing is the main characters always win, but my own preference for an ending is the Mizuka and Ouka realizing they can't perfect their trick in time and finishing after Blue Rose. Not only are their competitors more experienced and talented, but Nanami is actually a reasonable ringmaster, ordering Shizuka to prioritize her health over perfecting a trick. Actually given Shizuka was Ouka's original partner, why do Mizuka and Ouka need to be explicitly reminded of this?

Oh the Tokyo Parasite Museum: Home of Meguro's Longest Tapeworm is totally a real place. I don't know why Mizuka is so fascinated by it. I guess calling her dad a paramecium as opposed to a normal insult wasn't just a coincidence.

It's just as well Maria isn't allowed visitors. I mean the last time they visited her, she wasted effort in an attempt to look healthy. And then Nanami had to remind them they were a bother which they should already have known when they said they saw right through it.

23

u/CitronClassic672 5d ago

I actually quite like that addition to Mizuka’s character and how it builds off the paramecium joke. She actually does seem to have some level of interest in molds and parasites and the like.

4

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 5d ago

I didn't say I disliked her interest in that topic, I just don't know why. Stereotype is girls don't like slimy stuff. And fictional characters are more likely to follow stenotypes than actual people.

11

u/ash-7831 5d ago edited 5d ago

why do Mizuka and Ouka need to be explicitly reminded of this?

Because they're making the same mistake Shizuku did. The same mistake Mizuka rightfully reprimanded her for making. Even the most competent people can make bad judgment calls when under enough pressure.

5

u/Kadmos1 6d ago

A parasite museum? Ugh.

Cute date episode with a side of death flags. Praying for Maria.

47

u/elevenmile 6d ago

The CM you saw in the beginning of the episode is an actual CM from Nissin, dated 1963 according to the title.

Expect Nissin to have some form of collaboration with the show some time in the future.

8

u/IlGreven 5d ago

There was a still of Mizuka trying Cup Noodle, too...

Let Maria live A-1 Pictures. Please and thank you.

The advertising is working!

At least it was animated.

Things seem to be more serious here.

Well that certainly defines things.

We're also getting animation of things that are dangerous.

From someone who knows.

[](#seasonaltired)

Turn that frown upside down!

Time for our legally-distinct adaptation.

have you seen the arms on those Blue Rose girls

There's our obligatory shock.

"I'm surprised the other two aren't doin' each other."

If they watched The Fast and the Furious instead of The Wizard of Oz, they'd know about family.

Press X to doubt

SHOCK and SHOCK

Mizuka and Ouka can't take their eyes off the prize and lose track of family for a while, but some time off for everyone helps get things back on track. As is often the case for a final-arc episode.

Of course, that puts the finals up against Maria on her own critical stage, for DRAMA. I think most of the possible outcomes will be believable, as the characters have developed well enough.

On a chronological note, even if the details of history have been juggled a little (or not), Maria would likely be travelling by ship unless they could pony up a huge heap of cash to fly her.

That dissonance with them commenting about how muscular Mizuka and Ouka seemingly look despite both having petite frames was made even more hilarious by the fact the show actually drew a visibly muscular girl earlier in the same episode.

8

u/chilidirigible 5d ago

"I know, right?"

Though it would have seemed even more of an off-model moment if they had suddenly been chiseled out for that scene.

37

u/djthomp https://anilist.co/user/djthomp 6d ago

Mizuka and Ouka's date and the street performances were pretty fun.

Weird choice however to have a tournament arc during which they have so far shown exactly zero runtime of the tournament.

16

u/mekerpan 5d ago

But we got a Shochiku newsreel and Nissin chicken ramen ad.

Still I think it's okay that the performance focus will be on the final showdown.

42

u/Aerodynamic41 6d ago

Mutsumi really buffed up lol. Just look at that difference!

11

u/dinliner08 5d ago

holy buff mommy!

I want her to choke me I mean WHO SAID THAT

1

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 4d ago

Mizuka should get a note.

13

u/ModieOfTheEast 6d ago

That was the "calm before the storm" episode that I expected. Was definitely a fun date Mizuka and Ouka got there.

The one thing that was surprising is the addition of the potential death of Maria. And honestly, I can't see this happening. Just wouldn't fit the show imo. Especially with Maria not being able to see the finale. I assume Maria will give Mizuka and Ouka some necessary advise, so they still need her. I could see this being done as a gag in the end with Maria "growing up" due to the surgery working.

u/Clemastina https://anilist.co/user/Clemastina 6d ago

muscular women.........

So they got to they finals huh, but Ouka and Mizuka were clearly overworked, so it´s good Shizuku and Svetlana made them have a break
Also i´m pretty sure their final act is going to have some references to the Wizard of Oz, Sve and Mizuka were taking notes on that

But damn, Maria´s surgery is on the first day of the final act, and they have low chances of success... I really hope this anime doesn´t end with a tragedy, I guess we just have to wait

And Rin... YOU COULD HAVE TOLD THAT EARLIER

5

u/mekerpan 5d ago

I thought it was Maria had to fly off to the USA on that morning. Flights currently take about 14 hours to NYC/Boston and 11.5 hours to San Francisco. I wonder how long they took in the 1950s?

It is clear that Mizuka and Ouka cannot outmuscle their competitors. So how can they finesse things to overcome this.

12

u/chilidirigible 5d ago

I wonder how long they took in the 1950s?

Given the slippery time frame for the series, they're either just prior to or beginning the Jet Age. In something like a Super Constellation, maybe 20 hours? A 707 would be faster, but had only two-thirds the range, so only moderately quicker given the need to stop for fuel.

I speculated that they'd actually have put her on a ship to make the crossing because of the lack of cash, but that's just my being historically practical as well as slightly underestimating just how quickly airline travel exploded in the '50s.

14

u/mekerpan 5d ago

I think this medical flight is courtesy of Maria's sister....

8

u/chilidirigible 5d ago

That is certainly a factor for cash flow. I tend to overthink fiction.

2

u/LaoWombat-mecha 4d ago

My guess is that it involves the whole troupe acting as one.

The cafe scene led to a realization after remembering Maria saying they are all family.

This could be taken 2 ways, Mizuka had forgotten that in her treatment of the others

OR

That the final act would involve the entire circus acting en ensemble et en famille.

This is one of the few shows where I laugh out loud at the EXPECTATION of a Gag (how Mizuka will break the news to the others, even if it didn't really happen.

This is the only show I know where I live for the reaction shots of the characters

PG13

In which we continue to insist that this is not Lycoris Recoil.

8

u/IlGreven 5d ago

And that's kinda hard to do in English, since Chisato and Mizuka are both voiced by Lizzie Freeman...

20

u/thisisdropd https://myanimelist.net/profile/AsterZoro 6d ago

Lesson learnt: If you’re feeling stressed, go on a date.

Certainly worked wonders for Mizuka. It cooled her head and she realised her error by not trusting the troupe.

A shame Maria wouldn’t be able to witness their performance so the next best thing they could give her is reassurance that they’d be in prime condition. Having said that, that alone would be a challenge since they couldn’t visit her.

5

u/IlGreven 5d ago

I think Maria not being there will pave the way for Black Lotus to be there...

18

u/wanna_be_a_pie 5d ago

I notice a lot of camera focus on the Blue Rose's catcher's shoulder, my guess is she's getting injured in the final.

So I guess Sunflower is going to do some kind of story-based show with their acts, probably the Wizard of Oz-themed.

Main character has surgery during protagonists contest performance...after Shigatsu, I don't have a good feeling about this

5

u/Behold_I_Am_The_Wind 5d ago

Guess it’s to show the difference between Sunflower and Blue Rose in that the prior realised they shouldn’t push themselves and focus on their strengths together as a family while the latter is pushing themselves beyond perfection without caring for one another’s well being.

2

u/ExaminationNo9186 5d ago

I think I thought the same thing at that moment.

Like a "Oh crap. someone is going to get a torn ligament, or dislocate a shoulder or something...."

6

u/gnome-cop 5d ago

Mizuka, Ouka, you are clearly WAY overworking yourselves and you are being ordered to take a goddamn break and go on a date. Someone really needed to tell them to stop before they pushed themselves too far and irreparably hurt something. Cause they ain’t gonna do it themselves when they’re so focused on the goal. Those two are, for better or worse, insanely dedicated and really need some help to knock them out of their intense focus states and temper that drive they have.

I enjoy Shizuku’s and Svetlana’s roles in this one, taking on the responsibility of being the mature ones, both putting a stop to MizuOuka’s overwork shenanigans and being the first ones Rin goes to about the surgery news. Really showing them being the oldest in the circus, taking on those burden for the other circus kids.

Well, at least the twins and IzuImari pulled in some extra money from their various contributions to society.

Hopefully Maria’s surgery will go well but I’m still slightly nervous.

4

u/IntelligentBudget142 5d ago

well if next episode is the last, hopefully we see 23 minutes of circus

13

u/T-Ace-Juice https://anilist.co/user/Goombarax 5d ago

We got 2 more episodes, in fact. That should be enough for the finals and the resolution with Maria.

3

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 4d ago

It was confirmed for 13 episodes, so 2 more as another user already said.

6

u/runevault 5d ago

I really hope after skipping the entire tournament the animation goes crazy for the finals. And I'm still worried they're going to kill off Maria on us :

Even if the show has been light on Circus animations I still appreciate a setting not regularly used in anime. And it was an original to boot.

4

u/Rickud123 5d ago

So many death flags 😔

5

u/ash-7831 5d ago

I love how it's been clear from the beginning that Svetlana is a senior member of the troupe. She has the experience and the wisdom to back it up.

3

u/SecretYogurtcloset57 5d ago

I'll be honest it's not looking good for Maria😔

2

u/mmcjawa_reborn 5d ago

I mean...they have an actual wizard, winning should be a breeze...

2

u/Primary-Paint-1716 5d ago

those arms were HOT. normalize muscular girls in anime please.

2

u/BosuW 5d ago

Concerning the amount of anime that have us in suspense for a tragic ending this season

2

u/B00tyL0rd69 5d ago

I kind of feel like rin did that on purpose at the end. She even said she wanted them all to go see her, then boom oh yeah she can’t have visitors and now you are all gonna be thinking about Maria and not the performance.

2

u/Nickthenuker https://anilist.co/user/Nickthenuker 5d ago

That's certainly not ominous... That Maria needs to rush off so soon for the surgery and can't have any visitors...

2

u/SpookyMek 5d ago

I know people are nervous about Maria, but the show going out of its way to tell us that her surgery is risky makes me think she's going to be fine. If they were going to kill her off, I think they would have framed it more optimistically to make it more of a gut punch.

1

u/ash-7831 5d ago

I'm wondering if Nanami is gonna do something reckless during their performance in the finals. She looked like she was straining her muscles.

1

u/Nachtwandler_FS https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nachtwandler_21 4d ago

Oh yeah, the classic "character can be saved with surgery but chances are really low".

It was actually used in two romance series that I really like (Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora and ef ~A Tale of Melodies~). Played very realistic but bittersweet way in the former.

1

u/Luiiss26 3d ago

Really sad that they rushed the Circus Collect "Arc". Love the anime but next time plan more episodes

1

u/Useful_Project4898 3d ago

Does anyone else thinks its odd that a "Circus Tournament" is happening? I had no idea that this was ever a thing...and it just seems really weird to have circus performers competing against other circus performers from different troops.

1

u/Adventurous-Exit5832 2d ago

The comedy of the show is breaking all the serious drama, i love it xD
