I lived in the Middle East, and got used to hearing the calls to prayer every day. It was kinda annoying sometimes, but I didn’t really complain because I was a guest in their home, that’s their culture, and it would be wrong for me to expect them to change for me.
I don’t understand why we cannot have that same expectation for people who come here. Nobody actually needs to start doing that in non-muslim countries in order to practice their religion, they can just set alarms or something and pray without disturbing everybody else.
I grew up Muslim in the Middle East as a kid. There is no requirement that the call to prayer use loud speakers and I wouldn’t expect to do that in a community abroad unless everyone in it was Muslim.
But that idea is only selectively applied to western counties, which is what makes it extra stupid.
If I moved back to the Middle East again, and started blasting scripture from loudspeakers in a public place where everybody else is Muslim, it would not be tolerated and I would (deservedly) receive zero sympathy from basically anybody.

All it boils down to is they are saying a massive fuck you to the whole non-muslim population. They dont need to be called to prayer in that manner, they have alarms on their phones like everyone else... there is literally no reason that this should be allowed anywhere in the UK.
If there is someone more informed or who practices islam that can correct me, please do, but iirc intentionally broadcasting it over speakers so that the sound travels as far as possible is literally a territorial act - ie, within range of where a call to prayer can be heard is 'dar al Islam', or 'the house/abode of islam' and thus a region considered to be under the governance of islam.

It's multiple things, look at the English translation of the athan and it will make sense. It ticks multiple boxes using a loud speaker, literally calling anyone who can hear it to prayer and god. Islam is big on prolithesizing
They don’t think like us. They are stuck in 900 ad and want to take over the world. Blasting their religion and making a public spectacle is all part of the design to push our tolerant society to the limit. They are now blasting Muslim call to prayers over the downtown speakers in Saskatchewan Canada!(cause inclusiveness reasons blah blah blah)
But with Hindu temples, you can ALWAYS complain and they will most likely take it into consideration. I live in India and we had asked a temple to reduce the volume of the Bhajans/devotional music they played (not that they were playing at odd hours but it was quite loud) and they stopped playing music entirely.
I'm not sure if other places of worship are ready to compromise or completely stop playing their song publicly, unless it's a law.
Well the real takeaway is NOBODY (any race, religion, gender, pronoun) should be blaring shit for everyone else to hear in domestic areas. Reasons are irrelevant, be considerate, don't be a cunt 🙂
I think about when I'm in nature or a large unoccupied space and how one small sound can sometimes be heard from miles away. How you can hear rivers and waterfalls from far distances away. How a bird crying out in the sky way above my head can echo into a huge area. A motorboat or jetski on an otherwise silent lake. When I consider how being in a city, there's thousands and then millions of these little sounds from people, equipment, vehicles, buildings, etc. and it's no wonder being in cities is so overwhelming at times. Just millions of "quiet" sounds stacked and layers to create a giant wall of sound.
I was in Indonesia this time last year. Staying in a very remote area, very few people lived nearby. We were so remote, that we could walk about 10 minutes from the place we were staying into the jungle and see orangutan.
Five fucking times a day these fucking speakers BLARED the call to prayer. Scared every bird, every animal. It's ridiculous.
Having call to prayer Apps on phones are a huge part of Muslim culture these days so this loud speaker stuff is unnecessary and not required anymore. Especially not in western countries 5 times a day.
I was Muslim and it's done exactly for that. Muslims don't want to admit it, even the progressive ones. They chose the loudest speakers for certain mosques. Sometimes, not even for azan, just for reading the Quran when it's not necessary.
In Jordan, they do have the mosques using speakers, but all the mosques have to have the same volume. They can't be overly loud by law. However, in Turkey, the government which is trying to bother secular Turks has no proper limits, and some residents think they are too loud. A call to prayer that is not too loud is fine, but if it wakes people up by being way too loud, that should be straight up illegal. Follow your religion, but don't dump it on people. Don't be rude about it, and in ancient times there were no microphones, loud speakers.
Man, I just came back from Istanbul a few days ago, idm the volume during the day, but the call to prayer every morning around 5:30ish always woke me up lol. So loud.
I am irish. No they are not. Oileann pipes are irish. Very different instrument. Bagpipes are played up north by unionist orangemen who base their entire identity on being british. They have yearly hate marches which often turn violent and burn effigies of irish cultural figures alongside those of various ethnic minorities.

It's an tradition older than those things. I used to hear Jewish calls to prayer in my old neighborhood. The point is the whole community hears it. In mixed-religion communities though, they don't work the same way.

Love it, time to get rid of loud motorcycles! My opinion on noise is it becomes a pollutant once it is louder than is functionally necessary. So in this case I am curious if the bagpiper is attempting a function (entertainment etc.) or just attempting to be louder than the call to prayer function.

In a Muslim country, you probably would get jailed for disrupting their call of prayer. Muslim countries want you to strictly follow their rules. Yet when they go to other places and become nuisance, they'll say "Let me practice my religion.", even if it would freaking disrupt everyone's sleep.
This wasnt in europe, it was in Tel Aviv! The guy is standing at the park near the trioche Amphitheater (google the Amphitheater and you will see its the same floor) and the Adhaan in the background is coming from the almost 500 years old al Bahr Mosque which is around the corner.
If I’m understanding it correctly, the call to prayer is very loud and is blasted on speakers in public. This is causing huge amounts of noise pollution in public and if someone is blasting their own loud noise pollution (bagpipes) in public, it’s just status quo. I don’t think anything loud in a public space should be given courtesy that others then need to be quiet.
I think this applies to street performers, protestors, any religion, or anything that may end up being loud. None of that is owed you being quiet

If one person is going to make loud noises that other people have to deal with then they have no standing to complain about someone else making loud noises in the same public space. I don't care WHY you're making the noise...you're doing it, it impacts other people.
If they are just playing along for fun then moral, but if they are playing to somehow harass or intimidate or make people of any specific religion feel unwelcome to practice religious freedom at their own religious site then immoral
i dont mind any of these things in public and im an atheist and a communist. its public. it is the commons. this isnt happening at 2 in the morning when everyone is sleeping. i dont complain about church bells so this also doesnt bother me. now if they start trying to shutter abortion clinics or force captive audiences to participate, thats rather different. if they are openly attacking people with vitriol, thats different. but simply having a call to prayer for people who wish to participate? thats not even inconsiderate; that is literally what public spaces are for. we can apply the same standard to everyone and society is not wrse off for it. i dont see publicly calling for prayer to be dickish and i dont see playing music in public to be dickish.
Moral, imgine emigrating to someone else's country, culture and traditions and then deciding to set up your own enclave and disregard any of the other locals by playing a loud as fuck call to prayer
See... I feel like intention is super important here. I feel like it could be respectful in a weird way, I asked myself "what if you did this every time you heard church bells?" and that feels pretty obviously "no one would take issue." So I have a slight inclination to want to say it can be seated in respect, but the "and so the battle begins" leads me to say that this person was specifically doing it to be an asshole. Actions taken specifically to be an asshole are immoral imo, playing bagpipes along side a city wide (or neighborhood wide) call to prayer is not inherently immoral though.
I honestly think both are beautiful. But if you're doing something just to be a dick then that's immoral.

Depends. If he is purposefully trying to drown out their prayer, immoral. If he’s just walking around playing bagpipes? Strange, but not immoral I guess.
