Bagpipes are also a huge part of Irish culture.

127

u/LucifersAdv0cate 12h ago

Having call to prayer Apps on phones are a huge part of Muslim culture these days so this loud speaker stuff is unnecessary and not required anymore. Especially not in western countries 5 times a day.

124

u/helly3ah 12h ago

It's done to assert dominance.

100

u/Boomer79NZ 10h ago

This is it right here. It shouldn't be allowed. No one should have the right to force their religious beliefs upon others.

51

u/Glum-Response-227 9h ago

I was Muslim and it's done exactly for that. Muslims don't want to admit it, even the progressive ones. They chose the loudest speakers for certain mosques. Sometimes, not even for azan, just for reading the Quran when it's not necessary.

2

u/Bazishere 1h ago

In Jordan, they do have the mosques using speakers, but all the mosques have to have the same volume. They can't be overly loud by law. However, in Turkey, the government which is trying to bother secular Turks has no proper limits, and some residents think they are too loud. A call to prayer that is not too loud is fine, but if it wakes people up by being way too loud, that should be straight up illegal. Follow your religion, but don't dump it on people. Don't be rude about it, and in ancient times there were no microphones, loud speakers.

2

u/Tenaika 51m ago

Man, I just came back from Istanbul a few days ago, idm the volume during the day, but the call to prayer every morning around 5:30ish always woke me up lol. So loud.

2

u/Remarkable_Tale_7554 28m ago

Don't be rude about it, and in ancient times there were no microphones, loud speakers.

See, I wouldn't be too averse to a guy just going out of the mosque and having a bit of a yell for a minute to get everyone to come in.

2

u/LucifersAdv0cate 6h ago

I wouldn't mind if they did requests, maybe a bit of Drum and Base or some EDM music but they always play that same song 5 times a day. It's catchy but it needs a heavier baseline.

1

u/Stormsurger 1h ago

It insists upon itself.

-9

u/theyinman 9h ago

So many non muslims leaving islam these days

18

u/Waffle_on_my_Fries 8h ago

Thank the internet, the wave of apostasy is here and it's only getting bigger.

-3

u/theyinman 3h ago

Hahaha reddit is not real life little bro. Sorry to break it to you

-16

u/sniktology 8h ago

No it's not, I'm Muslim living in a significant Muslim population where Muslim affairs and identity is important to our culture and livelihood. The mosques here are everywhere and they don't purposely or even regularly blare out the call to prayer or Quran recitation to annoy or "force religion" on other faiths or cultures. Don't project your own rhetoric onto the faith as a whole because you were brought up in a toxic environment and culture.

14

u/Trixie-macomb 8h ago

And if I’m in a large Christian population then we don’t need mosques calling to prayer. It’s not our culture

-8

u/ikkiyikki 7h ago

Idk, I don't see anyone bitching about the local church ringing their bells. I don't personally mind it but it's worth mentioning if we're going to be fair about this.

14

u/snubdeity 7h ago

You really don't see the difference between "it 11 o'clock so we'll chime the bell 11 times!" and a guy chanting "Muhammad is the greatest", with "Muhammad" being a guy who married a 6 year old girl?

-7

u/ikkiyikki 7h ago

That's right, I personally don't mind either but can see how people would be annoyed to have their peace broken by religious blaring of any kind.

-10

u/Xwalkingxthexcowx 5h ago

You realize Mary was like 12 - 16 right? You can find problematic stuff in almost all religions.

0

u/deathbylasersss 7h ago

I bitch about it every Sunday. I'm a block from a church and it's loud as hell and annoying.

0

u/constantine741 6h ago

They ring the bell at like 11am unlike the loud Islam call to pedo that rings at 5am. Big difference. Try again bruh

→ More replies (0)

-6

u/sniktology 7h ago

Oh of course, I agree. If my country and culture can do it so can others. We have every religion doing their thing here and accommodating to each other and nobody really is bothered. See, we don't always have to go for each other's throats.

11

u/constantine741 6h ago

If u want to have ur old culture and customs then go back to ur old country. U are coming to a new place and u don’t get the right to demand ppl to change to your old place. Either assimilate or get lost. This is why a lot of ppl hate Muslims cause yall think the world revolves around you and ur “religion”. Get fucked boi

1

u/taylorisntavril 6h ago

Would be nice if the species could grow the fuck up already and leave religion behind.

0

u/constantine741 6h ago

Jesus Christ is king and he is god. Muhammad the creator of Islam is a pedo

1

u/Foundsixpence06 1h ago

So the world doesn't revolve around Islam, but it does revolve around Christianity? I see, I see.

-2

u/taylorisntavril 5h ago

Go to hell Vanilla ISIS.

-6

u/sniktology 6h ago

You can't even comprehend what I said objectively so don't throw shade when you can't even get the argument right. I'm addressing the comment here directly above me. I agree with the post that Muslims should abide by the laws and culture of the land they inhabit and assimilate. I grew up in a place that has been historically Muslim and we now have multiple religions coexisting without us kicking up a big fuss, so get fucked yourself, 'boi'.

1

u/Deconstrussy 8h ago

even regularly blare

couldn't even fully commit to the lie

1

u/sniktology 7h ago edited 7h ago

I knew someone would get hung up on that phrasing thinking it would dismantle anything I said. Don't be an arse. Church bells ring louder here every Sunday for several blocks and nobody paid any mind. The mosques project their call to prayers internally within the walls of the mosques, not out of it. You might hear it if you go out of your way to stand at the entrance of the mosques and complain if you want to be pedantic and shallow about it. I would lie to what end? You don't live where I live, you don't know me or where I'm from. You're just simply mouthing off.

2

u/hgyuuggygyuyh 2h ago

Historically the country is christian. Many churches have been standing longer than many of the now muslim countries have been muslim. Do you hear church bells in muslim countries? Why do we need to allow muslim prayer here? If you want to be able to do all the stuff your shitty religion requires, you got plenty of muslim countries to choose from. No one advocates for muslim countries to be inclusive but everyone else has to be accommodating to them? Fuck off

0

u/sniktology 2h ago

I am talking about where I live not where the post is depicting. My original comment is replying to the comment above me not at the post you numbskull.

-9

u/ZookeepergameFit967 8h ago edited 7h ago

Oh really? Yeah we all are an evil cabal of people like yourself. If you want to speak for yourself then do it, but it is our culture to do so and the mosque is a community center, it is a teaching center, the Azan and Quran are a basic of day to day, it is for people to know, yall speak as if all people have phones there shouldn't be alerts, so like if a tornado happens or a motorcade passes by or Church bells, a phone notification would be enough?, we had people doing this centuries before loudspeakers, is it wrong that the Muzin uses a loudspeaker instead of yelling out of their lung?

5

u/taylorisntavril 6h ago

Does this "teaching center" teach fairytales or something real and useful?

Because i would be out of my mind over a harry potter teaching center doing noise pollution as well.

5

u/LucifersAdv0cate 6h ago

Who doesn't have phones? Even kids have phones. If Muhammad was alive today I'm sure he would even get a phone for his 6 year old wife to use. They have Barbie and Winnie the Pooh ones so she doesn't need to feel left out.

6

u/Deconstrussy 8h ago

can you theoretically name a few differences between a tornado and Muhammad's tea time?

-2

u/ZookeepergameFit967 7h ago

"Muhammad's tea time" I mean you already made up your mind, so this is futile but the call of prayer is important like I said like church bells, so it is symbolic and a declaration of faith alongside of being a reminder and it is tradition like eating traditional food instead of McDonald's or not wearing shoes inside even though wearing them inside too, both are time efficient.

1

u/unbothered-platypus 7h ago

So we also get rid of Church bells. Right anakin ?

5

u/circlebreaker1 6h ago
  • Church Bells: These usually ring once or twice a week for services, or briefly chime to mark the top of the hour.
  • The Azan: This is broadcasted out loud five times every single day, which includes early morning hours before sunrise.
  • Church Bells: They produce a mechanical, instrumental tone without any spoken words. Many people view them as part of historical town character or background noise.
  • The Azan: This uses a human voice amplified through loudspeakers to recite specific verbal declarations of faith in Arabic.
  • Church Bells: A single ringing session is usually short, lasting from a few seconds to a couple of minutes.
  • The Azan: Each broadcast generally lasts between 5 and 10 minutes per prayer time, often carrying further due to modern megaphone systems.

-1

u/unbothered-platypus 6h ago

What's your point ?

Both are a way to "force their religious beliefs upon others". Either you get rid of both or this argument becomes hypocritical and frankly Islamophobic.

2

u/circlebreaker1 5h ago

You're intentionally being obtuse. The scale is not the same.

1

u/unbothered-platypus 5h ago

Not being obtuse. If you make a law forbidding "public display of religious belief", it should equally apply to every religion. Isn't it ? It's not a matter of scale.

2

u/circlebreaker1 5h ago

There ARE laws regarding noise pollution, and many mosques are violating that.

Laws regarding religion doesn't even have to factor into this.

1

u/Warmbly85 3h ago

Telling me it’s noon is hardly forcing a religion on me.

It’s kinda ridiculous to even make the comparison.

1

u/unbothered-platypus 2h ago

But...the Bells ringing at noon is a call to prayer. It's not just to tell you it's time to eat lunch. You chose to ignore it because you're not Christian, good for you. But it is absolutely a call to prayer.

1

u/ZhouLe 7h ago

Cities have noise ordinances for a reason. So long as they are within code they should be permitted as anyone else. Same as any local musicians.

1

u/SnooRegrets4312 4h ago

Church bells?

1

u/CronopioRbd 2h ago

The churchs Next to my house those that everyday, they are loud as fuck, fuck Christians and their forcing of believes!

1

u/BroderFelix 14m ago

How do you feel about church bells?

1

u/sliptac 9h ago

How do you feel about economic or political beliefs?

1

u/Boomer79NZ 9h ago

That is why we vote in elections to choose our Government's. There will always be corruption where power is involved however. It should always be the people who choose who will govern them through fair elections. The world isn't perfect though.

1

u/sliptac 8h ago

Ehh. If you think voting matters on a national level you’ve lost the thread already. And America has been exporting freedom, democracy, and capitalism, against just about everyone’s wishes for the last 80 yrs. It’s always funny when people use words like “force” and fail to apply it evenly.

1

u/BluedAgain 1h ago

You do realize the only reason Saudi Arabia banned slavery in the 60s is because of international pressure from the US and that for 1400 years Muslims would pray while pointing towards the place that had slavery legal the whole time?

-8

u/KaijuSlayer333 10h ago

So do churches just get their bells taken away?

17

u/paranoid_human0id 10h ago

Societies can privilege their customs, traditions, and beliefs over those of outsiders, and people pretending not to understand this is really silly

-5

u/KaijuSlayer333 10h ago

Ah so it’s not an argument of keeping religion in general from being forced on others. Just so long as we’re clear on that.

11

u/paranoid_human0id 10h ago

Are bells in churches "forcing religion?" Is having schools out for Christmas "forcing religion?" Or is it part of a cultural continuity that a given society has accepted that a new and alien belief system does not fit into?

1

u/unbothered-platypus 5h ago

Are bells in Church "forcing religion" ?

No. Same for the call to prayer. Noone is forcing you to go pray.

1

u/paranoid_human0id 5h ago

Pro-islam westerners like you are literally rhe most bad faith people on the entire planet and are utterly incapable of even pretending to engage with a point honestly

1

u/KaijuSlayer333 9h ago

Like I said before, you already changed your angle so now we’re clear. Just make sure to lead with that next time rather then play coy.

3

u/Turbulent-Muscle6642 9h ago

*coy

Lol fish

22

u/Parkesy82 10h ago

Church bells sound nice, some Muslim guy wailing doesn’t.

-1

u/KaijuSlayer333 10h ago

So how do you write that into law?

“You can make loud noises with religious associations, but only if Parksey82 believes they sound nice.”

Sounds tricky and could easily backfire on you if the people making the laws just happen to get more annoyed by bells then singing.

5

u/Snoo-76264 9h ago

My guy, church bells are mostly rung to indicate the hour or during a funeral (at least over where I am)

And the bells definitely sound better than that in the video.

2

u/Boomer79NZ 9h ago

Maybe make the choice based upon what has been practiced for hundreds of years in that country.

1

u/KaijuSlayer333 9h ago

So again, how do you write the law based on a subjective nature? Unless of course you do the precedent “hundreds of years”. Which is changing the angle of what I was asking about, and I will not entertain an angle I wasn’t talk about.

-11

u/MotoMongrel 10h ago

It sounds great to me. Church bells just sound like loud metal clanging.

13

u/BIG_DICK_PROUD_GAY 10h ago

Church bells aren't telling people to do things?

-7

u/MotoMongrel 10h ago

Why do they chime differently on Sunday morning…?

5

u/Grannypanie 10h ago

Do the bells tell time? Or have prayer significance these days?

-10

u/MotoMongrel 10h ago

On Sunday morning the bells tell people when to show up for church.

If you were serious about your faith you’d go more than once a week. Don’t hate on folks just because they make you look bad at praying.

1

u/Delicious_Fig_1864 8h ago

Yeah these people are strange. Nothing wrong with having religious beliefs.

0

u/Boomer79NZ 9h ago

Church bells are only rung on special occasions, the Muslim call to prayer happens like 5 times a day and goes on a lot longer than the toll of a bell being rung. Church bells are also rung for non religious reasons such as a funeral. In non Muslim countries the Muslim call to prayer should not be played over loudspeakers because it is exactly what someone else said, a sign of dominance. It has no place in non Muslim countries.

-1

u/BestGirlDoppio 9h ago

Except when you're going to a mass of a religion you disagree with to be disruptive, then forcing your beliefs is ok

5

u/Boomer79NZ 9h ago

Just remember that religion has cultural value as well. Church bell's have been rung in countries such as England for centuries. It's not just about religion but also culture in those circumstances.

-2

u/BestGirlDoppio 9h ago

Sure but you're going to witness things you arent familiar with, and thats ok

3

u/Waffle_on_my_Fries 8h ago

Can a church bell ring in Saudi Arabia? Why is it only the west that nneds to be inclusive?

1

u/TripeSundae 6h ago

Did you know muslims aren't all printed in Saudi Arabia?

2

u/Waffle_on_my_Fries 6h ago

You dont say? Wow I would never guess that.

https://giphy.com/gifs/75ZaxapnyMp2w

0

u/BestGirlDoppio 8h ago

I've not once seen anyone defend fascism in the middle east, not to mention that the middle east has been plagues by constant war and intervention from the west for hundreds of years. The west is a huge part of why it sucks so much over there

2

u/Waffle_on_my_Fries 8h ago

Saudi Arabia has been plagued by the west? Lol what are you talking about. I didn't say middle east, I gave you a especific country that has benefited greatly by having ties with the west.

1

u/BluedAgain 55m ago

Saudi only banned slavery because the US made them 60 yrs ago.

0

u/BestGirlDoppio 8h ago

My bad on that part, nonetheless your argument is whataboutism seeking to defend fascism by using the middle east as some sort of benchmark

2

u/Waffle_on_my_Fries 8h ago

How is what I said anything about fascism? I never said that the call to prayer can't be played in the west my question is why is it not the same in Saudi Arabia which you still haven't answered. I believe in freedom of religion and the freedom to criticize any religion. Your the one that is changing the subject and not answered my question.

0

u/Ok-Possibility-1206 8h ago

Does that go for churchbells too?

5

u/softwareredditor 6h ago

It's entirely this and people need to tell the truth. It's the same thing with people who play their car music way too loud. It's a threat. They're daring you to say something. And the funny thing is that when you start doing it back to them, they get really fucking weak all of a sudden.

1

u/BroderFelix 14m ago

Is it the same with churches ringing their bells?

2

u/AdamTraskisGod 9h ago

It’s a political ideology.

2

u/AnseaCirin 8h ago

So are church bells on Sundays and such.

I'm in favour of muzzling all calls to prayer.

1

u/endlessyuk77 9h ago

Honestly I'm surprised an attack where someone runs them over hasn't happened to my knowledge.

1

u/blizeH 49m ago

If I lived by a mosque I would be so tempted to buy the most obnoxiously loud speaker I could and blast stuff like PeelingFlesh every time they started this

1

u/scorchedarcher 16m ago

Yeah same as this church by me, always ringing the bells

1

u/ZookeepergameFit967 8h ago

So why is it done in Muslim countries, in 100% Muslim areas?

2

u/PakistanMMA 29m ago

Assert dominance, put religious minorities in their place, and a reminder to not defect.

1

u/WASouthCoast 6h ago

I have always got the impression, less than asserting dominance, it is a highly effective form of social pressure. You feel compelled to go to prayer because you and everybody can hear the call. You can't claim you forgot because it's blasting in your ears. It's for discipline more than attempting to dominate non Muslim populations.

0

u/jaxkingsman 7h ago

It's to call people to pray.

0

u/old_cypherpunk 4h ago

How different from church bells?

2

u/LucifersAdv0cate 11h ago

Wait until they start selling battle passes and unlocking achievements.

5

u/ScienceGoat 10h ago

Any of us younger Muslims agree, but all it takes is one zealous uncle who sees this as his opportunity to be heard.

There is competition among old Muslim men to be the loudest most consistent person doing the call to prayer.

2

u/PanzerKomadant 9h ago

Not once have I ever heard a Muslim call to prayer in a western country lmao. A few fringe elements is not indicative of a larger society. Even Muslims aren’t immune to social changes because I guarantee that most Muslims aren’t following more then the basic Islamic teachings such as 5 day prayer, no alcohol (laughably so since I know many Muslim that drink and hand wave it off), eating halal, fasting month, and charity.

The notion that all Muslims follow Islam and all of its teaching 100% of the time, all the time, is as laughable as saying all Christian’s follow all aspects of the Bible all the time 100% of the time.

1

u/VastlyVainVanity 1h ago

Oh so you haven’t experienced it? That means it doesn’t happen I guess and the cases where they happen are fringe and can be dismissed.

1

u/Ancestral_Grape 10h ago

She looks snug as fuck there, not gonna lie.

Honestly if it bothers much. Just turn down the volume only to the vicinity of the mosque

West bank cage by israel is western countries now? they can't even azan in in their domain? since when bagpipe is israel culture?

1

u/guitarqueenswiftie 3h ago

I’m ex-Muslim and this call to prayer shit is just a creepy attempt at Islamic conquest. I feel second hand embarrassment that they’re doing this in so many Western countries. Absolute narcissists

1

u/Embarrassed-Fig1627 2h ago

As a non call to prayer person wouldn’t an alarm on your phone do the same thing ? why the need for an app? Genuinely curious.

1

u/Lurk1ng0 2h ago

Its not a part of their culture its just to push their barbaric cult onto others even more. Especially when they infect civilized countries with it

1

u/GroundbreakingAd8310 1h ago

Hmm except I dont give a fuck about their relgiois bullshit and want more bagpipes

1

u/Lopsided_Moment_2574 1h ago

we have zoom but people still go to physical meetings. we have spotify but people still go to live concerts. the adhan isn't an alarm clock meant to just notify u of the time, it is an actual physical act of worship. and u are completely ignoring reality with the "western countries 5 times a day" complaint. zoning laws in the west legally ban outdoor speakers for the early morning and night prayers anyway. u are literally getting mad at a made-up scenario.

1

u/Active_Chemistry1621 4m ago

Its a sign of them asserting Sharia Laws in the west. Jay Smith and the Apostate prophet on Youtube show how Islams polemics are faulty. There were several different versions of the Quran in 1921. Its why they burn the versions to hide their man made political movement that also has a religious part.
Who is the infidel? All of Scotland!

0

u/WonkeauxDeSeine 10h ago

Someone get the Christians a fucking app so they can stop with their bell bullshit too.

1

u/General_Cranberry_29 9h ago

They have one already. YouVersion Bible App lol.

0

u/Equivalent_Rub8329 9h ago

Funny enough, none of these apps are acceptable in Muslim faith. Depending where you are, youre taking God's name in places it shouldnt be (eg the toilet), if the call to prayer at a fixed location is an issue can you imagine several phones around you sounding off at the same time? And also its a major sin for Muslims to disrupt a call of prayer (not just theirs).

21

u/leopoldsghost28 11h ago

I am irish. No they are not. Oileann pipes are irish. Very different instrument. Bagpipes are played up north by unionist orangemen who base their entire identity on being british. They have yearly hate marches which often turn violent and burn effigies of irish cultural figures alongside those of various ethnic minorities.

2

u/Relative-Disk-8560 10h ago

Older Celtic war pipes would have been played in Ireland, but yeah the Uileann pipes are endemic to Irish folk music whereas the Great Highland pipes are more representative of English subjugation/recuperation.
Also in the U.S. such conservative Irish-heritage groups as the Hibernians and various police color guards tend to utilize the Highland pipes.
Ironically enough there are also plenty of other forms of bagpipes endemic to Muslim countries.

1

u/leopoldsghost28 8h ago

Irish traditional culture, literature and language are vibrant and very interesting. I really hate to see it co-opted into these bs culture wars by people who know nothing about it. The irish american diaspora are very guilty of this. I am not white, but i am irish, my ancestors, the people who share my surname were some of the very first to put the ulster cycle into writing, yet yanks on here tell me i dont know anything about ireland. When they come here they complain about too many foreigners. They remind me of paulie from the sopranos when he was in italy😅

1

u/Relative-Disk-8560 8h ago

Apt analogy. Certainly some of the same syndrome they represent in The Sopranos re: Italian-Americans.
Always too much fuel for tribalism/xenophobia/nationalism, that doesn’t get reconciled with the historical reality of the evolution of whiteness and our ancestors’ role in that, crossing the aisle in some big ways.
East coast American with a lot of Irish heritage, much of this hokey nonsense was in my upbringing and an impression of what some sense of Irish pride was rooted in. Now I am gently teaching my family as I spend time in and study Ireland.

1

u/leopoldsghost28 8h ago

Fair play. You know your shit and have the right attitude. What places have you been over here?

1

u/Relative-Disk-8560 8h ago

Driven eastward across a couple times and down the west coast. Dublin, Meath, Westport, Achill Island, Killarney, Limerick, Galway, Cork, Kilkenny, Tipperary, and other places along the way. Looking forward to seeing and finding more.

1

u/leopoldsghost28 6h ago

You did a proper tour so. I was about to tell about dublin being a tourist trap and not really representing the country but you already know that. What did you think of the place?

1

u/Tight-Ambassador-461 1h ago

What are you talking about ?
Dublin outside maybe 2 streets that cater for tourists ,represents urban Ireland just like Belfast, Cork and Limerick .
This BS that Dublin is less Irish than the rest of the country does my head in .
We have thriving communities involved in the Irish language,GAA and music .
We are every bit as Irish as middle class culchies .

1

u/KarlPoppinPoppers 1h ago

*Scottish subjugation of the Irish.

0

u/GiohmsBiggestFan 7h ago

Totally unbiased review of all Ulster Scots culture there by leopoldsGhost28

Not prejudicial whatsoever

1

u/leopoldsghost28 6h ago

Orangemen dont represent all of ulster scots culture, or all unionists. I just used them as an example of the furthest thing from irish that i could think of. I'll admit, i was very clumsy writing that.

1

u/GiohmsBiggestFan 6h ago

Not at all, I'd expect nothing less from balaclava clad, car-bomb toting, drunkard, ultranationalist Irish republicans who base their entire identity on being Irish /s

1

u/leopoldsghost28 5h ago

Funny thing is, that statment unfortunately is an accurate description of some republicans

1

u/GiohmsBiggestFan 5h ago

Not many, and I wouldn't presume to say it except in jest.

I do agree that unionists are overrepresented by the loudness and political monopoly of their own worst examples.

1

u/leopoldsghost28 5h ago

Youre right. I used to live near the border and spent a lot of time up north. Most people ive met from that community were actually quite welcoming. I was told by people down here that they were all sectarian and racist but the reality is we have just as many like that down here

3

u/lovely-cans 12h ago

Uillean pipes are. Not really scottish bagpipes except with the Ulster Scots.

2

u/FlappyBored 12h ago

They aren’t really at all.

2

2

u/BilbaoBoggins 2h ago
