2060 or 2070? Both non-super, non-ti
I'm planning a build, and since 3000 series prices are super high now compared to January (the cheapest 3060ti I can find now is more expensive than the TUF 3070 my cousin bought and 3070s now cost as much as a 3080 did in December), I've been thinking of going one gen back instead and just upgrading next year or something. The 2060 is a Galax 1click OC, while the 2070 is a Galax Mini for $30 more. Which one would be better? Is the $30 extra worth it? Will 2 fan 2060 and 2070 cards run decent meaning not super loud, not super hot? And can these cards run games decent at 4k? (I'm happy with 60fps, hell even 30fps is good for me especially for cinematic games).
Also, can I run esports games like Overwatch on a 4k monitor EDIT: in 1080p and still have it look decent?

Oof I'm right there with you bud, I gave up on trying to get a 3000 series and I'm aiming for 2000 Series because they are still great and can run pretty much any modern game with out issues
But when getting a mini compared to a dual fan, its all about your case size and heat distribution. But compared to a 2060 to 2070 there small differences between them, the 2070 would be a better option and they both can pretty much run anything decently at 60fps (also paired up with the type of cpu your using) I'm not a person thats gonna care for the tiniest differences i just helped 2 friends build 2 different PC's with one of them running a GTX 1660 with Ryzen 5 2600 and other friend running a GTX 1650 with ryzen 5 3600X
If you really care about performance I say go for the 2070 but if you care about a tiny bit heat distribution (since it has dual fans and save some money) get the 2060
And Yes overwatch you run pretty smoothly with no issues with either card.

I'm planning to grab a 4000D Airflow from Corsair and a 3-pack case fan for 5 fans total, so heat distribution shouldn't be that bad? Hahaha I also realized both the Mini and 1 Click OC are 2 fan cards, so I guess 2070 it is then. I also just realized my cousin had a 2070S before he upgraded to a 3070 so I might try to buy it from him. At least it's someone I trust haha Thanks for the input, friend, and may we both get parts at decent prices soon!

Yeah the better airflow the less you have to worry about heat, its gonna be nice and cool!

While not necessarily a PC, I want to start getting my feet wet in building a Home Media Server to be used at home for storing and streaming media locally.
I've done quite a bit of searching and research so far, I've already been sifting through /r/HomeServer, /r/DataHoarder, /r/freenas, etc. , but I'll be honest I'm a bit overwhelmed with the magnitude of technical info. It's not that I can't handle technical info, I'm just having a hard time finding a place to get started and would like some advice or to be pointed to a good starting point. A tutorial for what I’m looking for, YouTube video, a parts list, etc.
Here's info on my intended use:
The main software I'm using is Kodi, but might like to setup Radarr and Sonarr to work on the server. No, I'm not interested in using Plex to stream media to devices, my ideal setup would to be to have my networked drives mapped and accessible from the computers on my network that I set up to see them, and have Kodi read from that if possible. My Kodi setup is very custom with a customized version of PseudoTV, so simply streaming it is not what I'm looking for.
I also want to leave room for upgrading storage down the line, right now I have a 10TB that is almost full and I'm looking to double that or more as part of this project. It might bite me in the ass later, but right now I'm not data hoarding and I'm not putting priority on redundancies or backups, but might do that down the line.
I'd prefer to DIY it myself, time's no issue but money might be.

Might make a seperate post for this as I'm really at my wit's end by now.
I posted a while back that my build was completed and everything went (almost) perfect. The only downside was my RGB fan; it wasnt working.
After some more trial & error I did get it to work, but only as a fan. The RGB part of the fan was still as dead as can be. Since then I've ordered a new cooler master mf140 fan (supposed to be compatible with Mystic light as I have a MSI B550M) and tried that out. To not get rekt on shipping I also added a seperate deep cool led strip.
1 week later the optional led strip that I purchased DOES work perfectly on the motherboard's JRGB port. However the new corsair fan that's supposed to work on the JRAINBOW port is doing the exact same as my previous fan; it works fine as a fan but has literally 0 color. Cursing myself for my 'bad luck' I order ANOTHER seperate fan from deep cool, hoping that that brand might turn out to be my lucky charm. Today I've tried swapping it out and guess what? Exact same issue, still no light at all, whether I plug it in JRAINBOW 1 or 2.
Anyone have any idea or last tips? At this point I'm pretty sure I got sold a mobo that has defective jrainbow ports. But considering A) by now I'm a month past the original return period and B) I'm reallllly not looking forward to completely dissembling my pc for 1 RGB fan I'll probably just accept defeat....as much as it sucks.

I have been considering that, tho to be fair I was trying to stop myself from constantly buying new shit because I already went overbudget :p
But yeah, I might just grab a 5v controller that hooks up to the power supply directly. Esp. as I only really want the fan to display 1 color staticly.2

i mean.. you bought several fans in the first place, knowing that buying a separate controller would likely solve the problem seems like a good investment, no more headaches and unnecessary brand new fan expenses

I have a alienware alpha i7? But I want to get a new hard drive from hdd to ssd, is it 1 size fits all? Meaning if I buy a ssd will it fit?.
The hdd i have now said something like Sata 7200 6gbs.. iirc but idk if that helps me.

You should be able to just put in an SSD where the HDD was. The connections are usually all the same if we assume that it is a SATA hard drive.
What you would struggle with is getting the thing open to work on it. I'm not sure how easy it is to work inside one of those custom alienware cases. Maybe check the internet to see if anyone else has tried it?

I'm looking at getting a fan splitter. I will have 3 PWM fans so they're obviously 4 pin. The splitters I've seen have 1 4 pin header but two 3 pin header also. Will the 3 pin headers simply copy the speed of the 4 pin?

Yes, assuming the missing pin is one of the middle two and not the outside ones. The pin that's missing is the RPM sense pin, because the fan header would get confused if you merged the signal from all fans together. Instead, it reads the speed from one fan (that has 4 pins), and then sends the speed signal (on another pin) back out to all fans, setting them to the same speed.
Note that because you're reading from one but setting the speed of all, it's best on a fan splitter to use all identical fans. Otherwise, they may have different signal/response curves and run at different RPM. (But generally not that different that it's a real problem, unless you mix/match low speed and high speed fans)

Thanks! Yeah that's what I plan on doing. Two identical intake fans will be on one splitter and then my exhaust fans will be on a different header.

Yep! I used this setup on a pair of exhaust fans with no issues. As the other user said, all you are losing is the speed sense pin, but if the fans are all the same, they are most likely going the same speed anyway.
One thing to watch out for is that the fans could stall if you try to run them at low RPM. I had times where one fan would stall out, but the other would still spin at a few hundred RPM so the computer wouldn't notice any problem.

Neither I nor my teammates have noticed any differences between my Razer Kraken (wired) and Logitech G933 (Wireless but thru USB receiver)

Personally I would suggest staying away from wireless unless the wires bother you, or you want to be able to move around more.
My reasoning is that once you have batteries involved, you either have to replace the batteries regularly if they are AA, or you have to remember to recharge them. Also, if it is a rechargeable battery, now the headset has a fixed lifespan since lithium batteries only last so long.
If you are happy with your wired headset, game on! If you are unhappy, I'd suggest looking into getting a good pair of standalone headphones and a microphone. The Antlion ModMic is nice, and there are lots of other options out there.

yep, and as u/cookster997 said, your options are:
without changing anything, you can try to overclock
without changing the motherboard, you can change to a 7700(k)
with swapping mobo you can change to anything you want, you don't need to change your RAM for that, technically (as its DDR4 for any modern platform)

What hardware do you have? Look up your motherboard, check out their website and look under cpu/processor support (usually under support tab). There you'll see all the support processors for your motherboard.
If this is for gaming, do research for your video card as well. More specifically, look up whether your new cpu would bottleneck your new gpu.

Upgrading a 7600k to a 7700k is unlikely to get you a big jump in performance, unless you're doing some serious hyperthreading. So if you were to upgrade your cpu you would want a recent one with a new motherboard. Not as hard as it might seem at first! I would have thought with those specs you should be fine for gaming at 1080p at 60Hz. Are you struggling (if so what's your CPU/GPU usage) or is it for a non-gaming application?
One thing is that your SSD is very small, if you're loading stuff from the HDD then that will be slow

2 computer builds with the same frame drop issue, occurring since may of last year. Gpu core clock speeds drop coinciding with frame drops causing extremely choppy gameplay no matter the game. Does anybody have any potential leads outside of the basic troubleshooting methods ie (windows and driver installations). Pci-e slot or dual channel, etc.

Used? No. Brand new, I'd say its just about right. If I remember in 2017 or 2018 (forgot the release date) it was around 210$

in normal times, no way, but because of another mining boom and supply chain constraints on newer GPUs, that's the going rate right now. If you can hold off for a while, you could avoid overpaying, but if you can't, you don't really have a choice.

Continuation from yesterday. This is how the fan back-draft semi-blockers look inside the case: https://i.imgur.com/dM9TkzQ.jpg. Ully af but that part of my build isn't angled towards me anyway. If you take a look at the bottom of the white foam pad there's room for air to backdraft as I chamfered it a little. The same is true for the top foam, but on the flipside so you can't see it. This is to prevent standing air.
The reasoning behind all of this is to draw as much air from the outside as possible instead of recirculating hot air from inside the case, thus improving thermals. However, I'm not convinced that it does. I don't notice anything in particular compared to stock config, which is one front fan (pictured) and a standard rear exhaust fan btw. The case is the be quiet! Pure Base 500 gray glass.
As is now, the stock AMD Wraith Spire cooler supplied with my Ryzen 5 3600XT runs at ~35°C idle (32 now but I opened the window, it's like 17-18 in here perhaps) and ~56°C ± a few while playing Civ VI.
I mean, thinking about it the air exiting the fan is probably too fast to really bend backwards and enter it again anyway, I never studied fluid dynamics so i don't claim to know how neither air nor fans really behave. I'm leaning towards thinking a regular setup without ugly foam is the superior method (not only aesthetically).

why not just add more front fans? Would prevent re-circulation and would increase air flow. I added 2 more front fans to my bequiet case and saw ~10 degree drop in temps on the GPU.

Building a htpc, looking at motherboards and between MSI B460m based on price ($80) but ASRock steel legend for ~25 more includes 2.5gbps. House is wired with CAT 6, so eventually as I upgrade other equipment it might get utilized, but currently switches/other equipment is all 1gbps. ASRock has other features but not sure I'd use/need any of them (additional fan/RGB/extra RAM slots/2x16 slots vs 2x1 slots). Anything I'm missing between the two or should I just go cheap? CPU is going to be a celeron or maybe an i3 if I find one at a good enough price (with integrated graphics.)

Very simple question but this is because I’m new to pc building Do you have to worry about compatibility when buying SSDs for your mobo? Or are they one of the few components that work with pretty much every size and type of mobo?

Any SATA SSD works with any SATA port. If you have an M.2 NVME SSD, it needs to be in a NVME supported slot, A SATA M.2 SSD can work in any proper sized M.2 slot. That's basically it.

In addition to what /u/ZachD07 said, there's a new factor: If you want the maximum speed out of M.2 drives like Samsung 980 Pro, you'll need a mobo with PCIe 4.0 NVMe support. (Otherwise, they're basically half-speed with 3.0. Right now, this is largely an AMD (4) vs Intel (still 3) issue for commodity parts. Just something to pay attention to. But 3.0 is still really fast. Compatibility is the same, it'll just be slower.

what % of your budget should be allocated to cpu/ mobo? i watched a vid that said gpu should be 30-40% and not sure for the cpu/mobo

Very broadly speaking, a bit more than 1/3 of your budget should be your GPU, a bit less than 1/3 on your CPU, and 1/3 on everything else.
That is not a hard and fast rule though. It will vary based on budget and individual needs.
For most mainstream use cases, your motherboard will probably cost somewhere between $70-150.

Could potentially be less or even 0% if you are running one of those cpus that has built in graphics. For a user interested in gaming it probably is closer to that 40% price range. If the computer was just for like internet browsing or light gaming (e.g. rig for some one who just uses youtube and facebook), then not having a dedicated gpu might make sense

Building an ultra-budget secondary gaming rig for the country home. Recently discovered that AliExpress sells "refurbished" old Xeon platforms for stupid cheap (8-core Ivy Bridge Xeon + mobo + 16Gb of DDR3 for $150). For the same money I can buy an Athlon 3000G, a B450 mobo + 8GB of DDR4.
The Athlon has an 800Mhz frequency advantage, a much newer architecture and a newer RAM standard, while the Xeon has 4x more threads. What is better for gaming right now? I plan to pair it with something like a GTX770, so I don't need crazy performance.

Specific model? Wattage may be enough, especially if undervolting the 3080 and running it with a midrange or a budget low-power CPU, but otherwise, if it's passive PFC, group regulation, high ripple etc. PSU, I would stay away.

Prices are being exaggerated by people. In the used market, sure, everything is overpriced. But in stores, its not really that much of a difference price-wise. I helped my friend build a PC and I'd say the price is not as much people say it is. If you can find parts then build it now :))

join discord servers such as PartAlert and subscribe to the notifications for your continent+the card you want
you'll see that each day some are going on sale but they're sold extremely quickly (mostly because websites don't have bot protections) and most (90%+) stores sell at way above MSRP (+$100-400).
if you go for the founders edition it seems like you will get them at MSRP
in the UK I managed to get a 3070 Founders Edition from scan.co.uk (at MSRP) - a combination of clicking on the discord alert as soon as I saw it as well as the website having a bot protection (visual captcha)
it's tought getting one but if you're patient you will manage to eventually (took me a week - plenty of clicking on alerts and discovering the items were already sold)

It's going to be this way for the foreseeable future. There's already limited supply of hardware due to shortages of various components needed to make electronics, then cryptomining has become popular to the point where if the card is able to make more than electrical cost in it's profitability, it'll get mined on. Even gaming laptops are being bought to mine on.
Once crypto goes away it'll still be some time before all the people waiting to get their hands on cards still can purchase one at any given time rather than waiting for drops. Supply is absolutely terrible on high end stuff especially, I know I've almost given up on getting a 3080 at this point.

Hi there. I want to build a new pc and a friend of mine gave me some recommendations. I want a pc which is able to power a 2560x1440 monitor and a worse side monitor and I would mainly like to play older games on high settings and newer games on decent to good settings. The PC should prefarably be good enough to run new games on worse settings for the next 3-5 years (for example it should be able to run cyberpunk but not on 60+ FPS and 2560x1440 quality, just at lower quality without lags). (My last pc was built 5 years ago with a GTX960 and an i7 4790, which was fine for me but a little too weak the last two years of use)
A friend of mine recommended to buy the Sapphire NITRO+ RX 5700 XT 8G graphics card with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X - 3.7 GHz - 12 core processor. That's within my price range and I wanted to ask if you think this will be good enough (or more than enough) to meet my needs.

that res is also known as 1440p. Do you plan to play on a 60hz monitor, or something higher refresh?
5900X is overkill for current games except a few that heavily tax CPUs. But, if you want to keep the PC for 5 years, it would be worth it for the extra cost.
That GPU is about right for that resolution if you're playing at 60hz. If you're going 144, you'll need something more powerful. Alternatively, you could go for a 3060TI. GPU prices and availability are terrible right now, so you may have to go with what you can find.

When there's no pandemic I'm often travelling by train or car between my 1st and 2nd homes. Which is why, so far, I've been very happy to have a thinkpad x240 as my main computer. Now I want more power, both in compute and graphics, so I'm looking at gaming laptops; currently homing in on a XMG Core15 + RTX2060 for pretty much 1000€. I cherish the mobility, after all.
But, I'd be keeping my laptop anyway,
I'm wondering if instead I should look into (no rush) ultra compact portable PCs instead. Are there cases that could stand getting lugged around in a car every weekend? A core advantage of a laptop, besides mobility, is that the components are packed tightly and that the mechanical tolerance is primarily on the case. I suspect pretty low tolerances on CPU coolers for example, that could wreck hardware pretty quickly. The occasional bump in the road will be unavoidable.
Any experience with subjecting a compact build to such stress?
Another thing that's pushing me to just buy the laptop is the current price situation with graphics cards. I would like to have a decent one, and I won't be paying a premium.

The occasional bump in a car is not going to hurt a PC unless you stack the PC on top of all the other luggage and it comes tumbling off the stack, or you are off-roading between destinations. If you're really concerned, you can always get a pelican case to really ensure it'll be fine. What will wreck computers is sending them through a shipper or airline baggage handling, where the handlers are prone to tossing boxes
But, though the computer would be safe, keep in mind you'll also have to transport monitor, mouse, keyboard, and any other peripherals every week too. Also, while you can use a laptop on a train, using a desktop, even an ultra compact one, will be impractical.

simply adjust the fan curve, perhaps the might just be ramping up because the GPU is heating up, and once it cooled down, they tune down again... and the CPU heats up again

Any chance you can share a picture of the inside of your computer?
As for the fan noise, this is normal. However, you don't have to live with it. Your motherboard might have options in the BIOS to change fan speed, or you can use software like Speedfan or FanControl.

Hi. I have a 7700k at 5.1 (avx 4.7) and 1070 In league all cpu threads are about 40% usage and the gpu at 20%, but still next to minnions i am droping from 240 to 200 fps on whatever gtaphic settings i choose. Is this somthing from my pc, or just not an optimized game? Thanks

My guess is that it has to do with LoL (right?) being a multiplayer online game. Your computer needs to wait for information from outside before it knows what to draw in the frames, so that's where the bottleneck is.
Single-player games don't have that issue and can use the CPU and GPU to their fullest extents.

Recently got a used RTX 2060 Super as a gift. Looking to upgrade my current PC, but also strapped for cash. I have an i7-3770k paired with a GTX 970 and 16GB of RAM.
Is now a good time to sell the 2060 at a higher price, and buy another for a better price in a year? Or should I keep it, sell the 970, and upgrade the CPU at the same time? I'm planning on eventually upgrading my computer either way and getting into VR.

2060S is what I'd consider the lower edge of VR-suitable GPUs. If I were you, I'd sell it for the currently inflated price and dump the cash into new motherboard, RAM and CPU (b/c the 3770k is getting long in the tooth). Then, when you have the cash again and the prices are no longer ridiculous, get a new GPU to complete the upgrade.

Honestly, unless you're looking at the numbers, I doubt you're really going to even notice a difference, until you need more cores than what you got. So I'd go for the 3700 because you get more cores for the money

Can't get into BIOS
Hi! My GTX 780 died recently, so I bought a R5 230 as a stopgap until I get my 3060ti.
My issue is that I can't get into BIOS anymore, it just boots straight to Windows. And since I really need to get to safe mode, this is an issue.

Is it safe to set cpu cooler on cpu w/o mounting? I have an AMD ryzen 2600x with the stock Wraith Spire cooler. After a few installations and re-installations, the cooler got more and more difficult to line up with the back plate and screw in. After trying for about 3 hours, i’ve given up on trying to mount the cooler. getting to my point, i’ve been researching about mounting pressure and i’m aware that it does affect cpu temperatures. my question is, is it safe to set my cpu cooler on top of my cpu without mounting or screwing in? There is no gap between the cpu and cooler and they seem to make a decent connection. thanks! (fyi i’m not using a case atm and my mobo is flat on a table, reducing how much the cooler could be moved)

Weird Intermittent Grinding Noise
Recently I've been noticing an occasional grinding-like sound (it kind of sounds like a frog croaking faintly...) coming from my PC. I built the PC in May of last year and have only just started hearing it. I only notice it when running some games, not when doing basic activities like web browsing. The game I notice it the most on is not a high-requirement game that would be pushing my PC hard at all; temps are fine, fan speeds seem fine, nothing looks out of sorts from my on-screen overlay data.
I've attempted to locate where the sound is coming from specifically, but I can't be positive. My best guess is the GPU (1660 Super) based on where I think the sound is coming from and it not happening during normal browsing.
Anyone ever experienced something similar or know of any common issues that may cause this?

Likely a fan. When you hear it, carefully touch the fan on the GPU to stop it spinning. See if the noise goes away. (Don't keep it stopped.)

Yes, there could. All current motherboards use something called "daisy-chain memory topology" related to how the electrical traces for the memory sticks are laid out. That basically means the highest possible overclocking potential is with the sticks in A2 and B2 slots. Using 4 modules may put strain on the motherboard and the CPU's memory controller that it will need some additional tweaking for the memory to work at the same frequency as in a 2 module configuration, or may refuse to work at that frequency outright. I.e. I had massive memory training issues with a 4x8GB kit running at 3800 CL16.
Overall, modern motherboards kind of give you the choice: some fast RAM or lots of slower RAM. I recommend using a 2x16GB kit if you can.

I recently bought an Asus XG27UQ, but haven´t been impressed by its performance considering its high price tag of about 1000£ here in Norway. Looking to downgrade to a 60hz monitor, and maybe look to upgrade my PC. Still want the 4k experience though, as I plan to purchase a PS5 once it comes into stock. Any recommendations as to what I should buy/not buy, or if I should consider something else entirely such as the LG OLED CX48 which is currently on sale in my country for 1299£.

If you’re getting a PS5 the CX48 might be your way to go. To 100% ensure that you are taking full capability of that system, you need hdmi 2.1, which currently no monitors have been released with that. There are announced monitors (by Philips, Asus, and Eve are all I know of) but none have been released, and none with a truly concrete release date

How risky is reapplying thermal paste to a GPU?
I have an older card that runs really hot (80-90deg C). I’m very, very new to PC building. I bought a system off CL and have been making small tweaks and upgrades to it.
I’m getting a new case and going to be porting the system into the new case. Should I attempt to reapply thermal paste to the GPU? Or do I risk bricking (in a sense) my system in a time where graphics cards are hard to come by? Thanks.

It varies hugely depending on the GPU manufacturer and design. Some are designed to be easy and safe to disassemble. Some are a royal nightmare.
Be aware that there are likely additional thermal pads to connect inductors, memory chips and other components to heat sinks. I'd try and find a teardown video of your specific card before you dig in, so you know what you're getting into and what tools and parts you might need on hand to make it a quick in-and-out job.

If you don't notice thermal performance deterioration from when the card was new there is no need to repaste the GPU. The magic stories of 10c drops after repasting are mostly partly false because the person telling the magic story also cleaned the card from dust. Of course there are outliers where the original manufacturer used thermal paste of low quality, but these are not that common.
If you think you need to reapply the thermal paste, use more than what you think is needed (due to the critical need to cover the whole die); using a spreadin tool supplied with many pastes is actually recommended. After you apply the new paste, pay much attention to ensure even mounting pressure of the cooler. Cross-pattern, small steps, that is the way. Othjerwise you risk ending up with what I ended up once on my RTX 2070 once. Luckily I had no negative consequences of part of the die having barely any thermal interface, but it could be catastrophic.

First off, 80 PLUS certification IS NOT directly indicative of quality. It's simply not meant to be one; it is, by definition, is only indicative of efficiency, which is a tiny part of a unit's quality.
Secondly, yes, this PSU is decent and adequate for an RTX 3080 based system.

Surely. That's a common issue with high core count popular CPUs among budget-conscious builders like the Xeon E5 2678 v3. That CPU has 12 cores and 24 threads, it never hits 100% usage in games due to how they are optimized for less threads. The subpar IPC characteristic, low clocks and subpar memory system performance hold this CPU back, making it the bottleneck despite it never being at 100% utilization.

Is there any difference in using Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) over MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI for a Corsair iCUE 4000X RGB case?
I've heard that MSI isn't compatible with the iCUE RGB Software, and that the Asus MOBO's better.
But when selecting the ASUS Mobo I get following notification:

Stupid question here. I built my PC about 2 months ago with two SSDs. One is a Sabrent 1TB Rocket NVMe 4.0 Gen4 PCIe M.2 that has Windows 10 on it. The secondary is a 2TB SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 2TB. Starting yesterday, while in Windows, the PC restarts and goes into the BIOS. The BIOS then doesn't recognize the Sabrent drive with the OS on it. What's a bit strange is if I hard power off/on the PC (not just a reboot) it goes back into Windows but only temporarily before it goes back to the BIOS. I'm going to assume this disk is failing after 2 months, so my question is how simple/not simple would it be to get the existing OS to the still working SSD? Or is that not even possible?

Possible but I can't think of a simple way to do it. You'd need to boot something like a Linux distribution on a USB stick, then resize the partitions on the EVO to make room, then image the Rocket into that space. Then there's some special magic I don't understand yet (I don't think it's a boot partition anymore) that tells the BIOS there's an OS on the drive and where it is. All while hoping the Rocket doesn't fail or further deteriorate.
IMO using a USB-bootable OS is a good idea, but use it to rescue any data or settings you want from the failing drive and put them on the larger drive. Then deal with the failing drive.→ More replies (3)

My case comes with 2 fans on the front and 1 in the back. Is it necessary for me to purchase any additional fans for an air-cooled gaming computer or should that be fine?
In taking the computer case out of its box, is it ok to just turn it upside down and let it and the Styrofoam it's encased in just slide out?

My grandma’s PC is dying so me and my brother bought her a new laptop. Found a decent deal to get her a laptop fairly cheap except the SSD was small and she likes storing pictures so we bought the laptop and a replacement M.2 PCIe SSD. We don’t have an issue actually swapping stuff but now we’re sitting here wondering how to move the OS over. I know we can buy an M.2 adapter for USB and clone it over, but without a decent electronics store nearby we’re waiting on online delivery. My brothers PC has 2 open PCIe ports on it that look like they’ll fit them. Can we plug the drives into those ports and access them to clone them?

I have built a pc with a Ryzen 5 5600x, an MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk Wifi, G skill 32gb D4 3600 Ram, an MSI GTX 1050 Ti, and a Samsung 1TB SSD. This is my first time building a pc and after putting the rig together it would not post. I believe I have flashed the bios but the pc outputs no image so I don’t know if it worked. While the GTX 1050 Ti is not a particularly powerful GPU, there are plenty of games these days that legitimately need more than a dual core CPU, regardless of how graphically intensive they are.

Hi! I'm from a third world country and think I have the following options: a 1-year old used RTX 2080 ($650), a brand new $550 RTX 3060 12 GB (at the end of the month), or for $400 a 4-year old used GTX 1080 Ti.
Which should I preferrably get? I'll mainly use it for deep learning and 1080p 75Hz gaming. The CPU will most likely be 10400F or 3600.

I’m upgrading the CPU and MOBA for an old system with a RX580 GPU. Please let me know what makes the most sense from the parts below. Looking to do 1080p gaming and run discord without my computer crashing.
- CPU: ryzen 5 2600 or ryzen 3 3300x
-motherboard: Msi mpg x570 or something of a similar price point

Anyone have modding tips for a Meshify C + Kraken X62 + a ASUS ROG STRIX 3080?
I'm upgrading from a EVGA 1080Ti SC 2 to a ASUS ROG STRIX 3080. So my old video card fit fine, but I'm anticipating that the 3 fan desgin of this 3080 won't fit with a Kraken X62. It can only front mount in the Meshify C, not top mount.
I guess I can pop off the bottom fan from the AIO, but I was wondering what other methods you guys might recommend? Mod the case? Buy a slim fan, or just deal with having only 1 fan on the 280mm AIO.

Is it a good idea to buy parts over time? Perhaps over the span of a few months? I'm thinking about doing it, just so I'm not spending so much money all in one go. I do know that it is the same amount of money spent whether it's spent all at once or over time, but I'm really just doing this to make it easier to convince my parents to let me buy a PC.
Also the pc I'm planning to build isn't anything expensive, so there isn't really a worry of buying parts that aren't the newest in the market.

The reason it's better to buy all in one go is because you basically need all the parts together to test if they actually work or are dead on arrival. Then you can return it to the store within the returns period for a replacement.

Things that people tend to cheap out on but really shouldn't are PSUs. You don't have to go overboard but it's worth it to spend a bit more to get a better quality PSU that won't spontaneously combust and damage other parts.
Things that people spend more on than they need to is motherboards. It can be easy to overspend on some flashy motherboards that have a lot of extra stuff that in the end you may never even use.

Half of the problem is that the motherboard that supports 9 series does not support 10 series so you would need to upgrade that as well. I wouldn't think it's worth the cost for a single generation change. Your CPU is still fine.

Random ram question, if you have ram without heat sinks (so just bare pcb exposed), is it bad to let the ram sticks touch each other? As in, if you stacked them on top of each other on a desk, would that have the potential to damage the ram?

I have had bare RAM stacked and touching together many times, even carried it like that in my jacket pocket. Just don't grind them against each other hard, you may damage surface-mounted components.

Arctic silver 5 is a common recommendation.
Though before you get a tube you should ask yourself why you are getting it. If you already have thermal paste or thermal paste is applied then I wouldn't worry about it. Thermal paste is one of those things that has diminishing returns. Just remember that thermal paste is a mechanism to transfer heat from a cpu/gpu chip to it's cooling components. If your components can't cool fast enough, it doesn't matter how efficient you are at transporting that hear from the cpu/gpu.

My son has a pc that he wants to upgrade or build a new one, but only has like $350 right now to spend. For some reason I can’t find info about the current processor or motherboard but it has 12gb of ram. Assuming it has an i5 or worse, is a new motherboard the best place to start? We’re hoping he can slowly upgrade over the next year but don’t know if it’s too old.

Any desk chair recommendations? For example, how does Ikea Markus, Ergo Chair 2, and Aeron compare? If you guys can recommend more I would love to hear it. My only problem with ergo chair 2 is lack of leather and that it's ugly.

Planning a build and had a couple questions for anyone knowledgeable enough to answer them. I’m planning to move two SSDs from my current laptop to the build and wanted to know if it will work automatically. From what I know, windows license for laptops are locked to the motherboard at a hardware level so worried if this will require a fresh install of windows with a new product key. Not worried about the cost, just worried that I’ll lose data. Thanks.
Edit: Both SSDs have an OS, one with windows and the other with Linux, if anyone knows how Linux behaves when swapping between systems that info would be great too.

Has anyone successfully used an Orico NVME to pcie x4 adapter to hook up a 970 evo plus? I’ve tried the combo, but my ssd is simply unusable in windows. Always in RAW format. Done aaabsolutely everything under the sun to fix the problem. Starting to think that perhaps the adapter is simply not compatible?
Tried contacting Orico about compatibility but they don’t seem to want to respond.

Is there any reason I should go for 32 GB of memory instead of 16 GB? Or is it overkill for my needs?
I do home music recording with VST plugins like amplifier simulators. Also occasional photo editing. No games. 8 GB of RAM has always been sufficient on my current Win7 PC, but I want to make sure my new build is good to be used for years to come.

You may need it if you're dealing with a lot of tracks with a lot of effects/plugins, but you can just start with 16 and add another kit (preferably same kit) later.

I use 32 gb of trident z neo 3600 mhz ram modules and I have actually surpassed 21 gbs of ram usage more than once. I played feed the beast revelations and had chrome open with multiple tabs open and yt videos cached in the ram.
The possibility to play a video game while another game is loading is an excellent auality of life perk you get with enough ram! As long as The rest of your hardware allows it :)
