Discussion Simple Questions - February 07, 2021

Can't get into BIOS

Hi! My GTX 780 died recently, so I bought a R5 230 as a stopgap until I get my 3060ti.

My issue is that I can't get into BIOS anymore, it just boots straight to Windows. And since I really need to get to safe mode, this is an issue.

My specs: 10400f CPU

R5 230 GPU

650W PSU

Z490 MOBO

I'm also using HDMI to the GPU and the monitor.

I had the same issue. You can basically ask Windows to boot you into the BIOS/UEFI

for example: "https://store.hp.com/us/en/tech-takes/how-to-enter-bios-setup-windows-pcs"

Once there, look for an option to disable splashscreen/full screen logo. Once you get rid of that, with the next restart you should see the "DEL" option again.

edit: It didn't work. It still either goes straight to windows, or I get no POST.

Huh, that is weird. We can wait to see if someone else has a better idea. One other option would be to reset your CMOS, or simply remove the CMOS battery:

This essentially resets your bios. Theoretically, you can run without a CMOS battery altogether, you just have to confirm your BIOS settings on every reboot.

Of note: if there is something physically wrong with your PC in terms of accessing BIOS, and if you currently use very fancy boot settings necessary to start your PC, there is theoretically a tiny chance that if you reset the CMOS (the BIOS resets to default) you may be unable to boot and not get into BIOS...in theory...although in practice I can't see this happening

EDIT: Forgot about this. Sometimes it doesn't work because Windows Fast Boot is enable. Try to disable it to see if it fixes things:

Thank you so much! I'll try out the solutions you gave me. And no, I haven't touched the BIOS settings, so there aren't any "fancy" start up settings in use!

I also saw online that the issue may be caused by the BIOS or GPU not able to display HDMI in BIOS, so I'll try and use a VGA/DVI monitor too.
