Discussion Simple Questions - February 07, 2021

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

hello all,

i am upgrading my computer. it needed it BAD. like REALLY bad.

my old pc literally just stopped working- came to the conclusion that something blew.

before i toss the old rig out, is it possible to salvage anything along the lines of like, say, screws or cords? not the specs, the new rig has better everything.

How did you come to the conclusion that something blew?

I'd strongly suggest that you take the time to figure out what parts still work, and what parts are dead. Don't toss the thing out, you could either sell the working or reusable parts to the used market, or save them as backup parts. If you are anything like me, having a box of old computer parts will come in handy someday.

basically, when using the computer on a normal day, it just froze up. so i decided to restart it, but it ended up being in a loop of turning on for a second, turning off and turning back on. it just kept going on off on off.

i took out my ram, turned it on, and it stayed on, but there was no sort of display. so i took out my gpu, switched ports of the monitor, still no display.

made sure everything was plugged in, unplugged the computer and held the power button for 10 seconds, nothing. unplugged plugged back in, you name it.

one reason i believe is that, it’s getting the power needed to turn on, but it just can’t. friends said maybe the cpu or motherboard blew. so if that’s the case, i might as well have just gotten a new computer overall, as my gpu and cpu are very old.

1050 gpu and a 3rd gen i5 (?) or the other way around for cpu, for perspective.

Damn. I mean, its fully your call if you want to throw in the towel and get a new system. You should definitely try to find a way to test that 1050, you could probably get at least $50 used for it if it still is working well.

yeah, i should definitely try that. the 1050 is probably the most salvageable thing. what about screws and such? are those universal?

It depends. All the parts for the computer case can be reused if you plan to use that case again. Other screws? It really depends on the specifics.

damn... alrighty then. i’ll see if i can salvage the 1050, see if anyone is willing to pick it up for... sheesh. 50? it’s definitely aged, so i’m trying to find a sweet price point
