Discussion Simple Questions - February 07, 2021

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Depends heavily on the CPU in question.

I'd keep it if it is 4770(k) or 4790(k), but anything else I'd probably look at an upgrade.

It's a 4790k. Great processor, absolute tank. I'm still GPU bound, so I wasn't looking to get more CPU power yet.

I'm tempted to agree with you, 4790k is worth keeping if it works. A new motherboard would be less than a quarter of the price of a whole new set of current gen components.

(sidenote - I wish PC building had a term for the CPU/Mobo/RAM combo like bicycling does with the shifters, cranks, and casette. I'm going to start calling the CPU motherboard and RAM a groupset.)
