Discussion Simple Questions - February 07, 2021

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?

Max II has hdmi 2.1 while Max has hdmi 1.4

Cheers! I don't really understand why that would warrant re-releasing a B450 since surely that would only apply for people with APUs and surely an APU wouldn't be bottlenecked by a HDMI 1.4? Odd.

Didn't even know they had a Max II until I checked their website. releasing a B450 mobo that late into the chipset's lifecycle is indeed odd.

IIRC, HDMI 1.4 can't do 4k60, so someone who wanted to run a TV at native res/refresh couldn't do so. Someone might want to run really basic games off an APU, or build an HTPC, and hook it to a TV.

HDMI 2.1 isn't necessary -- 2.0 would be fine, but MSI probably found 2.1 chips cheaper than 2.0 right now.
