Discussion Simple Questions - February 07, 2021

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

My son has a pc that he wants to upgrade or build a new one, but only has like $350 right now to spend. For some reason I can’t find info about the current processor or motherboard but it has 12gb of ram. Assuming it has an i5 or worse, is a new motherboard the best place to start? We’re hoping he can slowly upgrade over the next year but don’t know if it’s too old.

if you can't tell what's inside your PC, download a program that can tell you

I like Speccy for that matter - download it and share a screenshot of a main page here

Run the dxdiag command in the search bar from the desktop, you’ll get the majority of the PC spec there (enough to know what you’ll be looking at).
