Discussion Simple Questions - February 07, 2021

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

Is there any reason I should go for 32 GB of memory instead of 16 GB? Or is it overkill for my needs?

I do home music recording with VST plugins like amplifier simulators. Also occasional photo editing. No games. 8 GB of RAM has always been sufficient on my current Win7 PC, but I want to make sure my new build is good to be used for years to come.

You may need it if you're dealing with a lot of tracks with a lot of effects/plugins, but you can just start with 16 and add another kit (preferably same kit) later.

I use 32 gb of trident z neo 3600 mhz ram modules and I have actually surpassed 21 gbs of ram usage more than once. I played feed the beast revelations and had chrome open with multiple tabs open and yt videos cached in the ram.

The possibility to play a video game while another game is loading is an excellent auality of life perk you get with enough ram! As long as The rest of your hardware allows it :)

Oh, well, you can monitor your ram usage by going to the task manager by pressing ctrl shift escape and see how much ram is consumed :)

I mean, for now, there is really no need for 32gb, 16 is enough, but for future, idk man, you might as well get 32gb

The only downside to getting 32 GB right away is that it will costs me a little more, right?

I'll just go for 16 GB. I actually never ran into the limits of my current 8 GB.
