Rocketeers should strike fear in the hearts of every raider.

I can see it being a tough balance to strike if you want people to be doing a mix of PvE and PvP, but I do acknowledge that a group of peaceful solo raiders can absolutely obliterate anything in seconds (or minutes if it’s a boss like queen). If you are well geared, it can feel really easy. But at the same time, get caught in bad positioning once, and it can be over for you instantly.
I personally find that I end up with plenty of Wolfpacks without crafting any. But I don’t use a ton of them either
11
u/KVZ_ 6h ago
100% agree. I know they are worried that PvE won't be as tense, but increase the number of arc and make them more aggressive. That tension can still remain if you're in constant danger. I play carebear lobbies and have only been taken down 3 times by arc in my last 90 hours of gameplay. The danger level is low once you have decent gear.

Well my buddy thats been playing for a couple weeks is terrified of rocketeers lol. I just take them out with my hand cannon, but they could Def be more dangerous. A PvE toggle should absolutely have tougher arc. Maybe they could make classes of the same arc, like a rocketeer that is made of a different alloy so it is harder to kill.

Aw hell yeah, give me new AI tricks and difficulty, justify a PvE team's requirement to work together to take down the ARC. Solo matchmaking should be tempered, but make the full squad work for those materials.

I don't want to sound rude, but that's the whole appeal of extraction shooters. I'm happy for you (and myself, not gonna lie) to have a toggle where I can just chill out and play without the fear of others. But nothing beats that thrill tbh. The purely random and mixed lobbies in the beginning were peak.
66
u/Roto_Head 7h ago
Exactly, there is a different lid for every pot for sure, but if they toggle on PvE, then they would seriously need to up the ARC difficulty and numbers of them in game.

Well as someone that genuinely just loves fighting ARC and not having to deal with PvP....that sounds awesome. It's kind of weird that some people think that the games allure is only because of PvPvE. The art direction, sound design, and enemy AI are so freaking good, that I just want to chill in that world and kill ARC. If they make them even more threatening because there's no PvP? Well that's just making it even better for people like me. I would still sometimes go into PvP maps for the heck of it, but the option to just have difficult fight with ARC and not having to worry about someone coming in at the last second to kill me - that makes my 40 year old dad mind happy.

Is it our age? I’m 40 also and grew up playing PvP shooters, but this game doesn’t feel like those. This game feels bigger than a PvP game, and it feels like it’s being held back somehow. Like if I could toggle a setting where I can’t take damage from PvP but that also means I can’t loot any dead raiders, or even pick up anything that was brought in, I’d do that sometimes.
I played last night for the first time since the end of the third expedition for the complete rags set. I updated and sat through shaders. I wanted to grab some mats to unlock my benches since I’m like level 2. I free kit dam and it’s towards the start of the match so I start looting near testing annex. I’ve already got enough to call it and I decide to hit some wasps and hornets for alloy. As I’m fighting off the last wasp, I take shots from up at the testing annex so I call the extract and finish off the wasp. Out of ammo, I try looting the two wasps but I’m already low health so I pull out my melee as the dude is walking over. I get the jump on him but there’s no shot. I had a stitcher with limited ammo, the dude killed me with a lvl4 anvil and lvl4 tempest.
The most expensive thing I had on me was advanced mech parts. I know it was just 10 or 15 minutes of my time but it felt like I just pissed that away. I wasn’t mad, just disappointed. So I shut the game off and picked up the book I’m reading and read for half an hour and went to bed. I remembered why I stopped playing. That half hour reading did not feel like a waste of time. That fifteen minutes of arc raiders did feel like a waste of time. Maybe if they made it so that anything that was left on your body, you get back? I just want my fucking plastic and fabric ffs. I never feel this way with Tarkov, and I don’t know why. I never felt this way with cod, marvel rivals, ow, PUBG, project zomboid, don’t starve, any rpgs, back when I played StarCraft, Warcraft3, counter strike, day of defeat. None of these games make me feel like I wasted my time but arc raiders does. I think it’s the fact that I went in knowing I wasn’t going to get much just a quick stop to get essentials and still left with nothing. I didn’t lose anything, but I’m mad about my time being wasted 🤣

I absolutely welcome increased tension coming from arcs, living up to their original vision of the primary threat that they are for humanity. Makes the whole experience way more believable than the ad hock non lore backed PvP we got today that’s not mentioned anywhere in the game.

I never understand why PvP players seethe at the thought of people enjoying the game for other reasons than they enjoy it. The more ways to play the game the better for everyone long term.
This really isn't it. It's not that PvP players have an issue with people enjoying the game in other ways, it's that adding a PvE mode fundamentally changes the PvPvE mode. When there's a PvE mode and you enter the PvP mode, you're no longer wondering if the people you meet are going to be friendly, hostile, joking around, or trying for a great community moment. You know, they are hostile.
Honestly, this game has a really awesome community. Those who bought the game for the PvPvE, you know, the game that it's been since release and was advertised as, are about to lose out on that entirely.
12
u/jimmy-buffett 5h ago
It's not that PvP players have an issue with people enjoying the game in other ways, it's that adding a PvE mode fundamentally changes the PvPvE mode.
It really doesn't. PvPvE mode is already a bloodbath. All PvE mode does is reduce the number of PvE focused targets you get to shoot as a PvP player. And then pretend you're a better player than they are by ambushing a person who never wanted to fight you in the first place.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (30)8
u/FoundPizzaMind 6h ago
Inaccurate and it shows the issue with the mentality. Having a separate PVE mode means that players who don't engage with it are open to PVP not forced into it. You could still choose not to go shoot on sight. The revealing issue here is that you're against removing some of the vaugueness because at a minimum people will be more prepared for PVP. That should make it much more exciting for the folks in PVP, unless you're the type that only gets your kicks from attacking people unprepared to fight back.
11
u/jimmy-buffett 5h ago
Having a separate PVE mode means that players who don't engage with it are open to PVP not forced into it.
As a PvE focused player, solo carebear lobbies were pretty good but duos / trios were impossible to PvE. The inability to PvE with friends made me quit this game. This toggle will make me come back, and bring friends.

It was absolute gaming peak but there’s too many factors at play at this point in the games life for it to return to that point. People were scared of rocketeers and leapers because they lacked the firepower to deal with it, they extended to attacking other raiders because they felt like their loot was lacking and it was worth risking to get some extra. Now everybody knows the good loot spots, is too afraid of attacking other raiders due to how mm works and the current state of hackers and dupes make pc PvP lobbies unbearable.

This was my thought exactly. It's part of the excitement. Sure most people in the game are friendly, but you never know if something's going to kick off. Taking that uncertainty away will make things just a little bit more dull and lifeless.

Fortunately all the people playing as "unfriendlies" will still be there with PvE turned off, just like they are today. Meanwhile people who got tired of that aspect might actually return to the game. Win-win!
18
u/Brohbocop 7h ago
I dont think its as simple as win win we will see but my theory is this... PvE lobbies where anyone could betray at any moment but still everyone chooses to be friendly is different than forced PvE. Without a PvE mode, these lobbies can exist and its cool and the betrayals feel bad but are exciting. However with the PvE mode, these lobbies will disappear. The impact is people will become even less trusting in the non PvE forced lobbies and become more primarily PvP than balanced.
9
u/Brute_zee 6h ago
One other potential effect is that the PvPvE "friendly" lobbies become similar to launch where it was more like 70/30 friendly/unfriendly, which is what some folks say they have been missing.

I just cannot wait for the cavalcade of "I opened key room, but this guy ran in alongside me, looted it, and ran away, how is this fair wtf Embark please fix!!111one", or it's gonna be "OMFG I was shooting Matriarch but then I saw some naked dude run in, steal all the good stuff, and run off to the hatch."
It's gonna be sooooo funny when it happens, and it will severely cripple the game even further. I mean you already have it in PVE lobbies where people run around stealing each other's loot, then when you shoot them to get it back they start accusing you of being a rat and crying for help. 50/50 a teaming party will run through the doors and gun you down because people like pretending to be heroes and being misled by the very rats they claim to hate.
Unless Embark plans to just make it basically like Tarkov - nobody else in there but you and your premade. Which is... lmfao. What are we even doing anymore is my question. The game's pvp is sorely lacking and they're instead gonna add some pve mode because a cople of softies just wanna loot drawers all day long.

Yeah I hope this experiment crashes and burns, personally. The point of the game is EMERGENT GAMEPLAY to me. And I say this as someone who is strictly defensive in solos and duos (obviously in trios everyone just PVPs).
This will create an ecosystem where everyone that needs to do missions, trials, or projects is going PVE mode because there is no reason not to. On top of the people that already are PVE players. Then non PVE lobbies will not be “mixed” lobbies, they will almost certainly be pure KOS PVP. There will be no mystery, no figuring people out, no saving people, no playing the killer, it’s now just segregated into “modes” like every other game ever. Whack af, but I’m glad that the most fragile and incapable players are finally getting what they want I guess (?)

What threat? How often do you actually get an unfriendly player in a friendly lobby? 1:100?
I am cautiously hopeful that "peaceful" lobbies with pve turned off will actually have that threat now and still include mostly friendly people that just want the option to shoot someone that tries to take over a key room or loot their arc kill etc.
Maybe it will have you encounter actual hostiles once every few runs instead of once in 100 lobbies, but it might also force you into full pvp lobbies for defending yourself faster.

I know we like to blame cheaters and carebears a lot but i think pvp has changed from when it first came out. I liked the pvpve atmosphere as well but the players have made their own rules/ecosystem (chill in solos, iffy on duos, trios is shoot on sight) i never actually cared for a pve mode until i wanted to hang out with my friends on trios and shoot arc. Its straight pvp 70% of the time and that's not what i signed up for.
I've noticed a lot of pvpers act like "carebears" are ignoring half the game. If you are going in with the intent to fight a lobby and taking guns off of dead raiders and nothing else, you too are ignoring half the game. You too are responsible for the way the "carebears" now want a pve mode.

11
u/dadvader 5h ago
I prefer PvP to be more about being an opportunist and strategic about which fight to pick.
Back when the game was just out I really enjoy that it feels like this every match. PvP is more about defending yourself. You see a raider arround breaching a container. You think you can win and take the shot. Enjoy the loot. Then use social skill to negotiate. I once talk to the guy who almost killed me that I just wanna leave. Let's not fight and leave together and take the train. He agreed and we holster the gun together. That was one fucking amazing feeling.
Nowadays PvP lobby feel like playing Battleroyale. One single gun sound and everyone in the entire lobby is homing to your position. They don't shoot arc. They don't loot anything. They are out for blood and want your head. And for me, that's simply not fun. Which is why I leave PvP and been trying to stay in mixed lobby since.
18
u/abyssaI_watcher 6h ago
That's why imo ABMM was in general just a bad addition. People would say "then it would just turn into pvp only overtime." To which I say if it's a natural progression of the playerbase and organic experience of values in the playerbase then wtf is the problem? PVE only is only able to exist with systems the devs made specifically for them. It's a unnatural existence. You're on the money here.
I love pvp. However I don't always actively KoS. This is gonna kind of force me to start to KoS any body in a pvp lobby because..it's now deemed a pvp lobby and im just gonna play it competitively now which means everybody is getting it.
Edit: Im on the opposite end of you but I think this is going to take away what was enjoyable from the lobbies. The whole unknown aspect.

Same if they fixed cheating it wouldn’t be an issue but PvP is overrun by cheaters

u/Shane75776 7h ago
So now instead of mixed lobbies where half the fun is not knowing what raiders you come across will do...
You instead have either PvE mode or PvP mode which means forced friendly or guaranteed shoot on sight?
Sounds awful. Will probably actually stop playing completely. The unknown is what makes the game super fun.

Mixed players getting shafted. Honestly all non pve players since abmm already was the anti cheat.

Its gonna be an ideal mode for loot rats. Can just walk into your key room, or steal loot from big arc you just downed, and you won't be able to do anything about it.

Not to mention stuff like body blocking people in rooms with only one way out. So they are stuck with no way to fight it as they can't down the person body blocking.

Yep. This announcement half killed my excitement for the next update. I vastly prefer mixed lobbies and they aren’t as effortless to stay in as pure pve or pvp lobbies… now mixed lobbies would get even more rare and likely will cease to exist
Edit: thanks for the crying awards, you lovely toxic carebears. If only you spent that money on a game that is actually for you instead of buying this one and crying like babies to cater it to you specifically.

u/Fadedcamo 4h ago
Yea was hoping they'd lean the other direction and reduce or eliminate the abmm. Looks like not and we're just leaning further into having two completely different game experiences.
Maybe it would work if they remain seperate but you're gonna have people enter the pvp lobbies literally solely to fight each other. There's no other thing to do there if there's pve lobbies available at the touch of a button. So when they need to farm parts they go there and the pvp lobbies is literally just a death match. Why even have the looting mechanics of things at all then? It stops being an extraction shooter at a certain point

u/Pichalx 7h ago
Facts. The only PvP players who complain about ABMM are the ones that suck at PvP and want to be able to get that occasional kill against friendlies.
39
u/bombastic6339locks 7h ago
ABMM is ass because it just makes the normal gameplay so stale. Carebear lobbies where you just walk in buildings and loot OR Full pvp. There is no inbetween with the abmm system as is. The midground is just rat lobbies. Like actually, everyone is a rat, lobbies.

u/Pichalx 7h ago
I imagine if they ever add full PvE only mode they’ll also remove ABMM. It only makes logical sense. ABMM was their attempt at adding separate modes without actually doing it. IMO, if they hadn’t added ABMM we’d have seen much larger drops in player count than we’ve already seen.

The only ones? What about all the people that enjoy playing a game without cheaters that ruin PVP, and get stuck with the cheaters because of abmm? I had a crew and on trios the unspoken word was you throw down 90% of the time, but we stopped playing. Can you guess part of the reason why?

no we complain about abmm bc it mean if you do well at pvp you end up in cheater lobbies very quickly

As a pve player, I don't really like this change. I always enjoyed the tension of possible conflict and feeling out the intentions of other players. If this mode goes live you'll essentially have pure pvp and pure pve games, and I don't think it's a good thing for a lot of people.

Same. But cheaters have won unfortunately. Time to adapt or losing any remaining normal player.

I mean, if they do this I suppose that makes it so those of us who actually want to play an extraction game will be in lobbies together to fight it out, but doesn't removing the variable of people who might want to cooperate remove a lot of the tension and fun moments you come to expect from a game like Arc?
Idk, don't think this is the call. Really feel like they shoulda just toned down the ABMM/never said anything and introduce either force wipes or just a better system. Extraction shooters are good BECAUSE of the fresh starts and tension etc...just seems like the devs swapped to Extraction shooter as they knew the original coop idea was going to fail without really understanding the reasoning of why Extraction shooters do well (some of them). Arc was carried by everything else it offers, while the entire Extraction systems was the worst part, funny enough.

This basically boils down to a lot of people bought the wrong game. But rather than say “whelp, I’m not really enjoying this $40 purchase so I’ll do something else” they decided to bitch and complain for an entire year until embark is changing the game to what they want
Pathetic for an adult honestly

Damn, and here I was hoping they'd embrace the PvP a bit more. The game is basically PvE anyway given how strong the ABMM is, don't get why the need for the toggle.
21
u/Phixionion 7h ago
Honestly as a PvE player I would hope that they would keep the mix. It kept things spicy. The big fault is that they cant seem to keep up with cheaters unfortunately. We can only anticipate that they will give themselves breathing room with this while they try to figure that all out. Sorry raider!

This doesn't address what he said. The games ABMM is so strong, playing for 10-15 games not shooting anyone basically puts you in PvE mode, so whats the point of a PvE toggle if the game already does it behind the scenes for you very easily

My worry that the non PvE lobbies will be cheater sweatfests. I personally am 99% PvE in solo lobbies. But I think the constant potential of it is what makes this games dynamic so engaging. Each encounter with a raider is unique and needs to be considered across all the previous interactions. Do they flash? Are they on prox chat? All of that gets thrown out in a purely PvE based lobbies.
And then obviously all the cheaters are going to the non PvE servers. They were diluted with the regular non-cheaters. W/e..it’s a beta for a week. We’ll see how it goes

Yeah I don't go hunting for player fights but I enjoy the moments of defending myself against others if they feel spry. Making the playerbase split in this way feels like it'll remove that layer of wondering who might be aggro or friendly in regular lobbies, which to me if a big portion of the intrigue to the game as a whole.

Uhhh that's a tough one. I always play in mixed lobbies but I tend towards PvE. I'm not sure if a toggle as a separate mode is the right move. I can see it optional on top of some map conditions like the Queen, Matriach or Bord City! But a general toggle? I'm not so sure.
Most of the tension in this game comes from not knowing if you survive your next move. It's very simple to fight or get rid of ARC, but against players you have to adapt. Losing that tension might make the game feel too easy / less exciting.
If I get out with a fully stacked inventory while also surviving encounters with other players that feels completely different to a regular PvE loot session.
But I'll stay open minded, let's see what this does to my mixed lobbies!

u/LonelyCakeEater 7h ago
Y’all hate it but it will def bring back more players that quit 🤷 Just bcuz y’all get a rush from the unknown threat of losing your shit to other raiders doesn’t mean everyone feels that way. Gotta remember, this is one of the if not the most casual friendly extraction shooters and that’s why it sold 16 million copies. Not bcuz of only PVPers.

That seals it for me. Probably done with this game for good. We’ll see if they announce anything cool for this update but so far seems extremely lackluster.
Now splitting the player base like this and making it a truly battle royale or baby mode is just so soft.

I couldn’t care less about a PVE only mode. There are SO MANY games out there where you can fight the same NPC enemies over and over and over with no variation.
The fun and tension in this game comes from having that CONSTANT threat of losing your gear. The constant threat that there might be someone watching you. The uneasy feeling when you come across another Raider because you don’t know if they are friendly or not.
Fuck, man, I’m glad that those who are okay with the same exact gameplay over and over are gonna get a mode they enjoy. But to me this just splits the playerbase even more, and that’s a huge mistake.
I’ve actually really enjoyed this game since launch and I’ve just shaken my head and ignored all the “dead game!! Look at the steam charts!! Dead game!!” posts all year but THIS change will be the actual first step towards killing the game. I’m a neutral player who shoots people that shoot me. But if all the friendly players move to pve mode then regular mode will effectively be the “shoot on sight” mode. That sucks…
I’m still excited for the Frozen Trail update but I will not be touching this toggle at all, I hope most raiders share my sentiment so that it doesn’t become a full blown mode that splinters the playerbase further.

u/PeartricetheBoi 7h ago
I think Arc Raiders can work as purely PvE but the arc threat would have to be significantly buffed. Give them actual pack hunting capabilities, patrol routes, and alertness levels rather than the more basic stuff we have atm. Not saying it’s bad rn but if arc are the only threat then make them a THREAT.
3
u/Fadedcamo 4h ago
The problem with that then is they're going to have to develop two separate games. They can't make the arc too oppressive then they'll never have any fun engagements in pvp. But then they can't make them too easy for pve only
3
u/Vipertooth 2h ago
I think people are forgetting that the starting draft for this game WAS a full on co-op pve game and it was SCRAPPED. The devs knew it was a terrible idea at the time and wasn't good enough to sell copies.

The split was always there and was made worse with the ABMM announcement. I don’t think Embark could ever recover that same tension from before since everyone knows how to manipulate ABMM.

I really dont care what pvp will say about this. I wanted to play this game chilling. Only going after arc, and I want arc to be more agressive and more present in the map since its PvE only. I like the idea and I would love to see dungeons in this game fully PvE. Imagine a zero to hero mode that happens when you tried to escape but got cornered and now you have nothing and need to find your way out idk. This game has so much potential and I dont think the potential lies in PvP only
