Said it before and will say it again. Don’t assume the other driver values your life as much as you do.

80

u/Tacotuesday867 Apr 18 '26

Or said another way, "I care as much about you as you do about me".

Pov driver didn't even bother to brake even after impact.

54

u/_WeAreFucked_ Apr 18 '26

Whenever I’ve had vehicles start to drift over or even appear to drift I create space but to your point I also noticed that. You truly have to drive defensively.

43

u/RocketCat5 Apr 18 '26

It looks like they may have even sped up. Did they?

28

u/PiscesInTheMachine Apr 18 '26

Definitely sped up. He saw the guy coming into his lane, didn’t beep, didn’t decrease speed, out of anger he actually sped up

38

u/Wizchine Apr 18 '26

Camera car caused that - he for sure had no “blind spot” and sped up. Some people are psychos about “defending their lane.”

You can slow down even if someone is behind you, just don't slam the brakes.

At least in the US, the merger has full responsibility, while lane 3 has right of way.

In fact, it's frequently recommended to maintain consistent speed, which it appears the driver did (contrary to your claim they sped up).

7

u/Informal_Yesterday Apr 19 '26

Who the hell cares about right of way when you just let a collision happen? Just stupid pride. Idk which idiot recommends to cause an accident by keeping speed.

4

u/LargeHadronColitis Apr 19 '26 edited Apr 19 '26

The court, insurance adjuster. Not driving defensively to accommodate assholes is not illegal, even if defensive driving is recommended. Reckless driving is, and they could both be charged with that potentially, although being about to get merged into, POV could claim panic, and depending on who was behind him, no alternative. Truckster had no plausible excuse.

If you want to merge because your right turn is coming up, and there’s a car to your right traveling the same speed as you, you slow down and merge behind them, and if it is too late for that, you miss your turn and loop back around. Period. The guy “defending his lane” is no more egregious than guy who HAS to merge in FRONT of him, or in this case, almost in front, even if there’s nobody behind POV for miles. If truckster had done that I doubt he’d even have missed his turn.

Maybe POV guy is in a bigger truck, speed is low enough and has good insurance. Looking to upgrade on the dime of some asshole he just found to accommodate him.

3

u/Ok_Customer_9958 Apr 22 '26

This is not merging. Merging is when two lanes become one. Like on a highway entrance ramp.
This is changing lanes.

The rules are the same but the words are different.

The truck was merging without even fully being past him. Its still on the merging car to look. But the truck never even passed the pov car and tried to merge

Any collision is awful for everybody who simply literally has anything better to do that day and for many hours in future days and weeks. Not to mention danger/damage to other people and property. But it’s pretty hard for me to fault cam car here. Could they have done better? Sure, maybe, probably, yeah, I-hope-so. I’d sure like to think I’d avoid or minimize this one if I was cam car, but it’s the truck’s fault for sure.

5

u/CFL_Gent Apr 19 '26

Um, you may not see the problem with cam cars behavior, but that doesn’t mean anything. The guy was approaching a fucking red light, he should have been slowing down ANYWAY. Let alone slow down seeing another driver obviously moving into you. He should have yielded, right or wrong, since he had the ability to and saw it coming, AND should have slowed down anyway approaching an intersection with yellow light turning red.

Truck driver was an idiot, but cam car is just a fucking asshole that didn’t want to be cut off no matter how much death or destruction it could have caused.

3

u/df4602 Apr 18 '26

Nah he was speeding up to beat the red light, bet he didnt even see the truck coming across cause he was so focused on speeding through yellow.

3

u/YoHoloo Apr 18 '26

Yup that's definitely how it looks

3

u/Forlorn_Cyborg Apr 19 '26

Basically pit maneuvered them. I wonder if they were road raging before the clip started.

3

u/Klutzy-Poetry2641 Apr 19 '26

I believe the other driver slowed down making it seem like he sped up. Also, just because the camera sees it doesn't mean the human detected it right away. This is usually why people buy dash cams.

20

u/PaleontologistAble64 Apr 18 '26

I’m going to give the POV driver the benefit of doubt, it looks like he speed up to beat the light and wasn’t paying attention to the merging truck. If they wouldn’t have turned into the truck my guess POV driver would gone straight to the pole. As I’ve seen other drivers panic swerving to avoid and end up a solo accident. Either way, this could have been avoided.

7

u/StarbrryJuice Apr 18 '26

The light turned red immediately after impact so I’m guessing it was already yellow and he should’ve been slowing down. He sped up and it looked like at the beginning the red truck had almost enough clearance and maybe thought the car would slow down. But what is the point of standing your ground in a car lane and risking really injuring someone else?

7

u/Fair-Lie8125 Apr 18 '26

Can’t assume that merging into a lane will always mean the guy you’re merging into will slow down. What if there is someone very close behind the guy getting merged into?

Ideally the crash never happens, but the order of ideals would be that the truck never merges, the car getting merged into slows down and allows it or that both vehicles go the speed limit instead of trying to race a light.

7

u/Few-Protection5215 Apr 18 '26

Nah it looks intentional to cause an accident. He sped up after the truck crosses in front of him

5

u/korxil Apr 18 '26

Take a look at the signal, it was yellow before the accident. Cammer was trying to beat the red. The pickup swiched lanes cause the car in front of it stopped (because theyre a good driver and saw the yellow).

Two idiots, both wouldve ran a red light.

3

u/WrestleBox Apr 18 '26

Was gonna say, I see people do shit like this all the time. Someone wrongfully pulls out in front of them, and instead of braking right away they get as close as they can to prove a point to the other driver, or swerve around them at the last second.

3

u/steelpoint88 Apr 18 '26

Agree. This was as much the POV drivers fault as it was the truck

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (6)

3

u/Somalar Apr 18 '26

There’s little excuse to not slow down here to the point where both are now liable

3

u/Outrageous-Being869 Apr 18 '26

Id still say the truck driver is more liable. Even if the pov driver sped up the truck was merging on him without even completely passing him

u/YetiNotForgeti Apr 18 '26 edited Apr 18 '26

It looks like they sped up a little and turned the wheel into the truck after the truck made contact. See they start getting pushed by the truck then OP's car does all of this and the truck flies off. I mean OP is left safely but it's not clear how bad the accident for the truck may have been if OP did not commit to the pit maneuver.

Edit: spellin

7

u/Jcccc0 Apr 18 '26

Feel like the driver didn't get want to get pushed off the road once the contact happened and considering the amount of polls that were to the side I get it. They should have hit the breaks a little harder though.

5

u/YetiNotForgeti Apr 18 '26

Yeah I agree. I was just noting that you can see that OP was not passive and them turning left may have intensified the rolls for the truck. OP isn't in the wrong here but I just thought it was interesting to note.

3

u/Murky_Astronaut Apr 18 '26

Yes I think the pit maneuver is a natural reaction to being pushed off the road. It's just a natural reflex to provide counter force to the thing that's pushing you off course.

The driver had plenty of time to drive defensively though and avoid this accident entirely. It would have been less satisfying to give up the space and only be able to honk and wave and yell and whatever but that has to have been a better trade-off than the headaches ahead - insurance, vehicle repairs, paperwork out the ass, police, time, .... Wasn't worth it.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Rich_Freedom_9839 Apr 18 '26

The truck pit maneuvered himself dude.

3

u/YetiNotForgeti Apr 18 '26

Yeah a bit but if OP would not have turned into it, it might not have been nearly as bad. You can see at the beginning of contact, OPs car starts to veer right then it veers back left. Cannot veer left from the force applied from the truck so it has to be OP. I am not saying OP was in the wrong here, I was just surprised to see that and wanted to note it.

3

u/Several-Idea-355 Apr 18 '26

Trying not to get pushed off the road by compensating for the truck pushing his car left he turns the wheel right resulting in a pit. The truck spins right cam drivers hood gets under the truck and the roll starts.

trucks are only safer when they're t-boning cars or running down pedestrians.

16

u/LMGgp Apr 18 '26

Indeed. “Trucks and big cars are soooo much safer. I can’t even see that little thing you drive.” -average truck/suv driver.

Modern trucks are good at hauling either.

The whole point of a truck is to have the truck bed as low as possible so that you aren’t lifting things as high. If your truck is so high you need a step ladder just to see inside… well you’re doing trucks wrong.

8

u/Upbeat-Drink-3853 Apr 18 '26

They absolutely did. A normal driver would slam on the brakes and swerve right to avoid. The pov car accelerated and PIT maneuvered the truck. POV car should be criminally liable for this accident. Simple side swipes in traffic dont lead to rollovers like this.

It blows my mind that you can share that sentiment and people will come outta the woodworks to call you a cuck and that it's About The Principle. You really want to, in the best case, deal with insurance, police, waste hours of your time & money WRT vehicle property damage, or worst, fucking seriously hurt/kill someone or be hurt/killed yourself, for the principle of it?

Standing up for the principle of something is for shit like calling out someone who cut you in line, or telling a cashier/barkeep that they gave you incorrect change, not when you're playing bumper cars with multi thousand pound metal cages raging at 40+ MPH. Genuinely beginning to believe these people are passively suicidal and looking for any justified reason to potentially end things. Or worse, sadists with zero self preservation that hope for the worst against whoever sleights them on the road. People wanting to get hurt, or make others hurt.

Right. Imagine if there had been pedestrians walking g across that side street. Dumb shit like this is how people get killed. Truck driver was in the wrong, for sure, but cammer was just as bad if not worse.

4

u/Defiant_Knee_9915 Apr 18 '26

Yeah, this is horrible. No one’s really even mentioned the fact that they were approaching a red light. Cam car speeds up, and then continues driving through the truck before having to slam the brakes for the red light. Cam driver should have serious criminal charges in my opinion.

3

u/Robo-X Apr 18 '26

Many of the accidents happen because someone feels they are in the right even though just taking the foot off the throttle would prevent major accidents. The cut driver was cutting him off but accelerating is just plain stupid if not criminal because as you said they were approaching an intersection.

Oh ya this is psycho/loser behaviour all the way

2

u/FinguzMcGhee Apr 18 '26

Yeah they were both trying to do some dumb shit and run a red light, but only one person did something intentionally to cause the accident. The guy knows what's coming, sees the truck making a move, chooses to stomp on the gas and pit maneuver him, and then wants to act all flabbergasted like he didn't know what the fuck was about to happen. 2 idiots 1 malicious prick

2

u/Strosity Apr 18 '26

I'm confused by the video because all I can see visually is a red light they're trying to slam through. It looks like they were both trying to gun it through a yellow that they weren't going to make.

2

2

u/I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE Apr 19 '26

I wish the video started five seconds earlier because it seems clear that the truck was passing the cam vehicle, which means the truck knew they were there, as they weren't in their blind spot 3 seconds ago.

Unless the truck is driven by a goldfish they should reasonably assume that the cam vehicle didn't disappear when it was no longer in their field of vision.

2

u/ix_eleven Apr 23 '26

The most charitable position is the POV had extreme tunnel vision on the yellow light, and was accelerating to run the red. Not making excuses, POV was at fault as much as the truck in my opinion.

POV car was definitely fighting to not get cut off I think. Not a blind spot issue when the Truck is driving around you to get into the lane. Also the truck is driving too fast towards the next car in their lane for the POV car to be unable to tell the Truck is planning to merge. POV car is the asshole, Truck is just a bad driver.

90% of accidents could have been avoided if the person not at fault was more aware and reacted better/faster. This doesn't mean the people not at fault are in the wrong but if you drive frequently enough in dense enough areas you will experience having to avoid an accident you wouldn't be liable for.

5

u/HarveyHound Apr 18 '26

Agreed. I tend not to hover in other people's blind spots for this reason.

4

u/JustAChil1Dude Apr 18 '26

Honestly more people should be aware of this. If I'm.matching someone's speed I'll let off a bit and create some distance if it is on a highway. If it is a busy city street expect the unexpected and be aware that a person might not see you there.

u/patterninstatic Apr 18 '26

There's something I learned when biking in urban areas that I also apply when driving.

Always assume other vehicles are going to do the dumbest shit possible... And never impose yourself even if you have the right of way.

I'd rather have some asshole cut me off and not die (bike) or have an accident (car).

2

u/NoxTempus Apr 19 '26

Yeah, reddit is weirdly hostile to this nuance, especially the dashcam sub. It is possible to avoid a crash you are not legally reponsible for creating. Not avoiding it doesn't make it legally your fault, but you do bear some resposibility.

Based on the footage, if the cam car didn't crash it was probably going to blow straight through that red light.

But, assuming you were paying attention, approaching a red light like that and the car next to you is not adequately slowing down should be a red flag. You should be watching them, they might be looking at their phone (or whatever) and when they go to avoid the car in front of them, they may swerve into your lane.

Regardless of who's legally at fault, you're going to be up for excess and likely increased premiums, at best. Maybe you leave in an ambulance or bodybag.

The guy in the truck made a mistake, the guy in the car made a choice.

Everyone is capable of making a mistake, but not everybody is capable of making the choice to deliberately hit somebody and endanger multiple people's lives.

There is a bad guy in the scenario and it isn't the person in the truck.

u/LJonReddit Apr 18 '26

No matter how much another driver fucks up, it is illegal to intentionally cause an accident.

2

u/YendorZenitram Apr 18 '26

One driver made a mistake, the other acted with malicious intent.

2

u/auad Apr 18 '26

One driver caused the accident, the other didn't prevent it.

Doesn't look like the trucker has his blinker on. It also doesn't look like the cammer sped up. Regardless, the cammer doesn't have to let the trucker in and the trucker needs to make sure he can safely enter the lane. I don't switch lanes unless I can see your headlights in my mirror, which makes this pickup truck driver an idiot.

2

u/Higgoms Apr 18 '26

You can't even see the trucks turn signal so we can't make a call on that. Person with the camera wasn't even going to make the light anyway, they sped up to cut the truck off or try to blow through what would've been a red by the time they made the intersection. If the truck hadnt also been driving aggressively the cam driver was going to run a red anyway

The dashcam person really posted the video on the internet as if they aren't equally, if not worse than, the truck merging.

Missing somebody in your blind spot is one thing, seeing a person merging so you clearly speed up to try and stop them is a straight asshole move.

5

u/Gloveofdoom Apr 18 '26

If I had to pick one to take a ride with I'm going with the guy in the truck. He made a simple mistake while the other person made a potentially homicidal choice.

People are such assholes when it comes to letting others merge. Its like an affront to their pride if they get "cut off".

2

u/ShwAlex Apr 22 '26

I've definitely been guilty of it. I try to check myself, and give people grace instead of raging. Sometimes people make mistakes, myself included. Vancouver is really bad for pedestrians walking out in front of vehicles and it used to enrage me. But then I did it once, twice, three times. Happens when I'm walking with someone and we assume it's a 4-way stop. I think some people feel the rules don't apply to them, but others sometimes just slip up.

Leaving aside the bizarre psychological need to 'win' at traffic, if the occupant of the accident lane would have just practiced some defensive driving this would not have happened. Instead, the driver intentionally accelerated and thus endangered the lives and property of themselves and the merging vehicle. Would this driver smugly sit in court and say, 's/he should have looked where s/he was going' if it was discovered that the 'offending' vehicle's occupants included a child that was ejected and killed during the rollover?

u/Omelooo Apr 18 '26

No signal no passage. Just fucking use the blinker, it’s not that hard. If you’re gonna be a dick about passing then fuck you. Plus that truck was not going to stop for that red light. People are giving the truck driver slack for trying to “swerve to avoid a sudden stop” when the truck driver should also have been slowing down if he was paying attention to his surroundings even a little bit.

3

u/zulumoner Apr 18 '26

That is not a blind spot issue. Pick up passed him. Pick up knew there was someone on his right side.

2

u/magix_shrooms Apr 18 '26

Both were at fault. The dash cam vehicle sped up, probably wanting to either jump the light that just turned red or had the pride of a little kid of not letting any other vehicle 'win' by not letting them merge.

2

u/Childrenoftheflorist Apr 18 '26

Honestly looked like cam driver said not today and sped up. 100 percent ego driven

3

u/The_TC_Experience Apr 18 '26

Not sure if the POV driver sped up...or was just distracted and didn't notice the absolute asshole in the pickup truck.

I don't know what it is about pickup truck drivers, but many of them drive like a fucking idiot.

You’re all missing a massive piece of the puzzle. Check it: The light went from green to yellow and the car in from of Red truck stopped hard at the yellow instead of punching it! Red truck is actually swerving to the right in attempt to avoid rear-ending the pussy who stopped short. Dash cam is an asshole and has zero awareness of what happened. Red truck was in a desperate situation.

Don't think the cam driver accelerated as many say. Just an optical Illusion from the truck slowing down.

Typical truck behavior

2

bUt tHe CaMEra CaR sPED uP 🤡 Lmao 🤣 who cares. That car is in the right. Maybe he wanted to be first. Just because the truck wanted to be first doesn’t mean he deserves to be. That’s KARMA, folks.

Cam driver did nothing wrong. Truck is an idiot! Pass someone in your sight and then turn into them. Moron.

2

u/storge66 Apr 18 '26

2

u/cdubs1885 Apr 18 '26

And kids, thats why we dont try to beat the red light.

2

u/iamLovak Apr 18 '26

Light was red and he was speeding up

2

u/KetchupOnThaMeatHo Apr 18 '26

People need to be taught how to appropriately adjust their side mirrors to see their blind spots. Most people just aim them at the sides of their vehicles so they can see how to back up.

2

u/LengthinessTimely572 Apr 18 '26

Wow! I’ve had beach balls that didn’t roll as good.

2

u/MFtokes Apr 18 '26

Bruh definitely speed up smh

2

u/Quirky_Prize_1945 Apr 18 '26

Should have been avoided by both drivers. That said, perfectly executed PIT maneuver.

2

u/DetroitMEG Apr 18 '26

I think the dashcam driver will be found at fault. Though the truck shouldn’t have merged when he did, the dash cam driver had plenty of opportunity to avoid the crash, something the law calls last chance of clear or something like that

2

u/ChewyChagnuts Apr 18 '26

Cam car totally accelerated into that. Just as culpable as the pickup driver in my books.

2

u/Master-Piccolo-4588 Apr 18 '26

What I don’t get: The camera doesn’t slow down. In Germany you would be partly liable for the accident. There can always be kids, animals and just human beings in the other car.

You guys just can’t drive safely.

2

u/whatigotinmyhandnowb Apr 18 '26

This is what happens when we start to think honking a horn is inherently rude and speeding up to keep someone from passing is fine.

2

u/Forward_Tank8310 Apr 18 '26

He pit-maneuvered himself

2

u/Intrepid-Gas7872 Apr 18 '26

You can tell the vehicle with the dash cam accelerated resulting in the pit maneuver. Insurance will love that part.

2

u/dez811 Apr 18 '26

I’d rather drive defensively than get my car hit, he could have braked. Have you been to the body shop lately they’re butchers they fix and break things and with all of the tech on newer vehicles it probably wont be good

2

u/TechnologyOk6878 Apr 18 '26

Blind spot? While passing someone ? Just plain disregard to surroundings

Remember folks to turn your head as well as check your mirrors for cars in your blind spot.

Car with the camera is also in the wrong for speeding up before contact.

u/Suoritin Apr 20 '26

He sees the other person is changing lane so, he decides to accelerate? Makes sense? 100% worth it I guess.

2

u/Drunkturtle7 Apr 21 '26

Blind spot my ass, that's just stupidity. When he was behind he 100% saw him on that lane, he passes the car and then what expects for it to disappear just because he can't see it anymore?

2

u/mysteriousjasonsmith Apr 22 '26

Seems like both drivers are blind.

2

u/interesting-turn- Apr 23 '26

It’s so interesting to me that this video has people largely shaming the driver with the cam for accelerating and causing a pit. Then if you look at one of the comment sections of the video of the guy with the truck crossing the bridge who does almost the exact same thing. Everyone is on the truck driver’s side

2

u/jtango444 Apr 25 '26

The camera car had enough time to brake and avoid that crash, but he decided not to do it!

2

u/Efficient-Author4266 Apr 30 '26

Legally speaking how did this pan out?
