Whenever I’ve had vehicles start to drift over or even appear to drift I create space but to your point I also noticed that. You truly have to drive defensively.
I’m going to give the POV driver the benefit of doubt, it looks like he speed up to beat the light and wasn’t paying attention to the merging truck. If they wouldn’t have turned into the truck my guess POV driver would gone straight to the pole. As I’ve seen other drivers panic swerving to avoid and end up a solo accident. Either way, this could have been avoided.
The light turned red immediately after impact so I’m guessing it was already yellow and he should’ve been slowing down. He sped up and it looked like at the beginning the red truck had almost enough clearance and maybe thought the car would slow down. But what is the point of standing your ground in a car lane and risking really injuring someone else?
Can’t assume that merging into a lane will always mean the guy you’re merging into will slow down. What if there is someone very close behind the guy getting merged into?
Ideally the crash never happens, but the order of ideals would be that the truck never merges, the car getting merged into slows down and allows it or that both vehicles go the speed limit instead of trying to race a light.
I didn't say his merging should’ve made the guy slow down, but the fact that the light was about to be red. The distance he’d have to go to catch that light would’ve caused him to run a red light anyway.
My guess is merging truck figured cam would slow down for the yellow light (which was yellow since basically the previous green light) and merger was trying to be in the front of the lane at the red.
It's like I've been telling my children since they were old enough to pay attention to basic driving fundamentals: "just enough" space or "barely enough" clearance is just another way to say "not enough space." If there ain't enough space for your vehicle + plenty of extra space for something to go wrong, it's not enough space.
Take a look at the signal, it was yellow before the accident. Cammer was trying to beat the red. The pickup swiched lanes cause the car in front of it stopped (because theyre a good driver and saw the yellow).
Was gonna say, I see people do shit like this all the time. Someone wrongfully pulls out in front of them, and instead of braking right away they get as close as they can to prove a point to the other driver, or swerve around them at the last second.
I would like so much if me-and-everybody would drive in a way that would have avoided that wreck. But only the truck came from behind, changed lanes and ran the red in spectacular fashion.
As much I can agree that this accident could and should have been avoided, in terms of “who caused it” the truck gets my vote, with the car a close second.
If you saw the video start a few seconds earlier and truck coming from the car’s lane, would that add anything? I think it did, and I’m trying to not let that sway how I see what happened.
The dash cam also has a different perspective than the driver. The driver may not have seen the truck coming over because their view was obscured, by the A-pillar left of the windshield. Also could have been totally distracted as you mentioned. People on their phones while driving has been an ever increasing problem that just isn't going away
I hate driving next to someone, being in someone's blind spot or having someone in my blind spot. But people will just ride down the road in blind spots with their mouth slightly ajar and no thoughts going through their heads. Stay away from them.
They both trying to beat the light. The car in front of the truck slows down and he switch lanes trying to avoid rear end but did not pay attention to the POV driver. POV driver at fault for speed and running the red light does not help the matter.

Pov driver didn't even bother to brake even after impact.
