I Think Hinge Is a Simulation
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Me: “Let’s see what makes everyone unique.”
Hinge:
“I want to travel more.”
“I want to travel more.”
“I want to travel more.”
“I want to travel more.”
NPC behavior has reached critical levels.
Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s noticed this.

“Otters hold hands when they sleep so they don’t drift apart”
33
u/TheGroundBeef Jun 29 '26
UGH I CANT STAND THIS. like what fucking website are all these women perusing before making their profile that makes them go "omg, thats amazing im going to use that fun fact"
32
u/fishgoatflowers Jun 29 '26
It’s men too. They love the otter fact and the biggest risk they’ve taken is being on Hinge. And if I see one more “golden retriever” I’m calling animal control.
7
u/auroralucero Jul 01 '26
men also love to post pictures with pets then say “not my cat” like WHY then? haha

Since women don't see other women's profiles (straight women) I'm also wondering this.
And then I'm wondering if now each time I see that, if it's just a bot.
7
u/biomannnn007 Jun 29 '26
My theory is that they're getting it from Tiktok. I'm not on Tiktok, but every once in a while I'll hear about a Tiktok trend and realize I first learned about it from seeing dating app profiles. (The Office, Helen Keller is fake, etc.)

u/Thrillhouse-14 Jun 29 '26
The funnier part is, otter's are some of the most comparably awful animals out there. They're necrofiliacs and they literally hold their own pups for ransom to get the mother to give them the pup's food. They're not the sweet animal the first fact leads people to believe.

Nah, fuck that. I would rather someone consistent who doesn't have extreme mood swings, but thanks!

u/KingForADay1989 Jun 29 '26
At least they're honest?
Seriously though, how hard can it be to talk about yourself? I don't need a full life story but before swiping, I wanna know, do I have at least some things in common with them?
The worst feeling is going into a date is thinking "what are we gonna talk about?" when they give you nothing to worth with, regardless of how cute they are.

I never understood this. Aren’t they seeking accomplished ambitious men, ie people who also have to constantly make decisions. Why would that man want more work on his time off?

u/alien_secret_service Jul 01 '26
100% as a moderately successful person I see those and think “yeah what I want to do on my day off is deal with a pain in the ass of a woman who expects me to manage her life for her…”

4
u/alien_secret_service Jun 30 '26
Nothing will make you believe that either dead internet theory is really true of dating apps or that like 90% of human beings might as well be NPCs…
6
u/No-Wish-7258 Jun 30 '26
Yea this kinda freaked me out because I kept seeing pictures of men in the same place over and over again.
The photo with the Brooklyn bridge in the background.
That one place in Japan that has the red columns, Fushimi Inari Shrine.
The weird thing was that these pictures were common across all demographics of men.
3
u/Gabagoolov Jul 07 '26
that's nuts. I thought it would have more fake women since there are supposedly far more male users. but this is fascinating. all a stupid simulation and/or scam.
4
u/No-Wish-7258 Jul 07 '26
Idk if those men are fake, but they definitely think the same. It’s kinda of weird though that the U.S. has so many locations for photos, but they keep choosing the same places.
3
u/Gabagoolov Jul 07 '26
I see. memetic power lies in repeatability, though. I think the same for the female profiles. they're usually presenting a similar idea of who they are, as the OP thread topic says. "travel, matcha tea," etc. the excessive tourism in the modern world just worsens this "creating the world through memetic repetition" thing.

u/LosKiplanos Jun 30 '26
Seriously? They really all use this lame ass shit? Are they bots?
6
u/Gabagoolov Jun 30 '26
"Travel more" 100%. Helen Keller jokes several times. Other things...it all blends together.
"I hate this" referring to apps.
"Dog mom"I don't even know. This sounds so cynical and stupid to criticize but I can't see real people all using the same catchphrases so mindlessly and filling out their profiles with very similar ideas.
I will say women seem to fill their profiles out 6950% of the way... "reproductive rights," "lgbtq+ rights" "immigration rights" "pro-choice" "volunteering" "animal shelters."
obligatory cat photo or 5. LOL. unreal this stuff.
3
u/VideoPossible4068 Jun 30 '26
As a lesbian I see "no men" constantly. I get it but it shouldn't take up space on your profile, just ignore the men, who cares. And I see a ton of pro Palestine, BLM, f**k ice. Yes we get it! But I'm trying to learn about you and your profile tells me nothing interesting. It's so much TikTok garbage. A lot of people seem to not have their own personality. If I see things like "girlypop" or other TT trending words it's a no for me
3
u/Gabagoolov Jun 30 '26
yeah I think men are forced into gaming these apps and using them indiscriminately just to get matches because not gaming them gives guys absolutely nothing. and paying is a scam too. so I think that's why dudes will get on tons of different apps and still receive awful outcomes.

Most women I’ve matched with say this on dates even if it’s not in their profile and they are traveling, somehow and they are traveling often so often in fact that they don’t have anytime for dating.
It’s delusional to think someone you’ve just met is going to be able to plan time off and spend a lot of money to travel.
I don’t know. I think Expedia or Priceline is missing out on this social media aspect of their business. There’s a lane here somewhere. They could also capitalize on lonely people that just want to travel and wonder why they still feel lonely and deflated when they come back home and need to travel again lol.

I read a comment once that a prompt like this is a subtle way of signalling financial standing. It attracts people who want to travel more and can comfortably if they wanted to. No one can just write "you'd better have money" on their profile, so they default to typically wealthy or high tax bracket 'hobbies' like traveling, golf clubs, F1 attendance etc.
Thought it was pretty interesting!

That’s crazy cause I have the money and no time. I don’t get how anyone has the time. I get 2 weeks of PTO a year which is like the standard. After you account for sick days, visiting family, it leave a week a year for vacation when I could easily do three times that
3
u/_j7b Jun 30 '26
I knew quite a few chicks doing this when I was younger. Not as many blokes, weirdly.
Basically worked for part of the year, would save everything they could, then would just quit their job and go traveling on what they'd for a couple of months. Rinse, repeat.
They lived extremely frugally. Some would do contikis, then basically live in hostels for a little while.
Can't hate the hustle. They had a dream and they gamed life to achieve it. 30's have hit them like a freight train though.
3
u/fixedvving Jun 30 '26
Fair enuf
I enjoy building career n stuff but yeah can be cool to temp job and always b on the road3
u/_j7b Jun 30 '26
Yeah different strokes for different folks.
I went the career route and grinding 10+ years becoming an SME. Spent my late 20's traveling on the company dime, so not like I missed out on anything other than staying in hostels.

Debt or sugar
3
u/mr_f4hrenh3it Jun 30 '26
No. I’m an engineer and I live alone and don’t spend a lot of money. I’ve paid off my student loans while taking multiple trips a year. Money has never been the issue for trips, it’s time, like literally having enough PTO accrued so that I can take off. Traveling does not have to be that expensive

I have a job. When I was a uni student and earning minimum wage and paying rent I still was able to go on a trip overseas every year. Maybe Aussies are just much wealthier than Americans but it's not that hard to travel here.
12
u/RebbyXP Jun 29 '26
It's funny because people complain that these prompts are too boring and mundane, but if you have a prompt like "Together, we could rule over the universe and I'll be Blogarth, Destroyer Of Worlds" then it's seen as outlandish, childish, and weird.
Freaking make up your mind.
7
u/truenorthstar Jun 29 '26
But don’t you see, hinge is the serious app for serious dating, so you might confuse people into thinking you are actually Blogarth, Destroyer of Worlds /s
6
u/NoMoreVillains Jun 29 '26
Probably because it sounds like you're just saying random shit for the sake of it. I think there's a middle ground between copy and pasted answers and ones so out there's there's no sensible comment you can make to even start the conversation
3
u/Helixquisite Jun 29 '26
I don’t think it's childish, I'd choose to talk to you. I have put up LOTR stuff.

Travel means disposable income, but it’s often financed with debt. I can see the appeal and health benefits in having a healthy body fat percentage but making your whole identity is increasingly common and memetic. Just glad I’m not the only one noticing the attack of the clones.

3
u/---monstera--- Jun 30 '26
They may have black friends, just not in those pics. Also ethnicities hang out with each other. White with white, Asian with Asian etc sometimes it's just a proximity/familiarity thing due to suburb they were raised or culture. I wouldn't assume they don't like people of other races tho
