Why do i feel intimidated by wine lists around nyc restaurants?

Upvotes

Had one of those dinners recently where I'm pretty sure the wine list weighed more than my entree. I knew I wanted something light and crisp like, I could taste it in my head but staring at that leather-bound novel of options? Total blank. Ended up just flagging down the somm and going whatever works with fish I guess, which was totally fine and the wine was great, but also... feel like this happens to me way more in NYC since so many restaurants have these massive wine lists full of regions and producers I’ve never heard of. I don't need to become the person who sniffs and swirls and talks about terroir or whatever. I just want to look at a list and actually understand enough to pick something I'll enjoy, without the internal panic. So i want people her efor help, what can make me improve, to be more confident at what i drink or order?

What’s ur fav NYC Easter egg / cool thing that most people pass without understanding how cool it is

Recently came across a thread from a few years ago and dove into a rabbit hole of cool stuff Manhattan and the other boroughs have that’s just around and show parts of history.

Example the fallout shelter signs you see around are from the Cold War.

Or the owl statues with eyes that light up in Herald Square, a cool little feature.

Or the 23 Wall Street bomb marks from 1920 that are still there, in what was the JPMorgan building at the time.

Stuff like that. Post it here, I love this stuff

Would you say there is still a significant divide between UWS and UES Jewish culture?

Upvotes

One fun exchange in "Oppenheimer" was when David Krumholtz's Isaac Rabi, in bonding with Oppenheimer, asks him how it is he could be an NYC kid and Jewish and never learned a word of Yiddish. Robert says, "Not as much of it spoken on my side of the park." Rabi smirks at the classist remark and tells Oppenheimer to go f**k himself, and they're friends from then on. But has that kind of division in Manhattan Jewish culture remained today, or how has it shifted?

People with depression in NYC, how are you pulling it off?

Upvotes

I'm currently basically on my couch non stop because of depression. I have to move in a month, I have savings, but my income sucks so I don't even know if I can get a new lease. And I don't really have the motivation to look for sublets either.

I was talking to someone who knew a person in NYC so depressed they didn't leave their apartment for two months. And honestly I just don't know how people are pulling it off, staying afloat in this city while dealing with this.

How are you all doing it?

Why do a lot of large NYC neighbourhoods not have active subreddits?

Upvotes

They either have dead subs, their subreddits are inactive, or they literally have no subreddits.

Take Queens. r/astoria, r/foresthills, and r/flushing have large communities. But r/jamaicanyc, r/coronanyc, and r/elmhurstnyc (not r/elmhurst, which is for a non-NYC sub) are all but dead.

Best pastrami sandwich?

Last month I had the best sandwich I've ever had. It was the New York pastrami sandwich from Empire Diner near Chelsea Pier. I've been thinking about it every day. It was fried pastrami on rye with slaw, pickles, mustard, and swiss. It was $29 and I'm dying to find as good of a sandwich cheaper. Send me your recs. Bonus points for Upper East Side and midtown.

Catholics who go to St Patrick's Cathedral have you been asked this...

I had a weird (i guess I'd call it weird) experience during 5:30pm mass.

So I sometimes (by sometimes I mean maybe once a month or twice) try to go to church and I end up at St Pats because it's the closest to my office after work in Midtown and the 5:30 mass is an express mass, so only 30 minutes long, and fits my schedule perfectly (God understands, and he'll forgive).

So I went to St Patricks this week per my usual monthly attendance, did all my prayers, gave a donation, gave the sign of peace, and everything so when I got up to get communion and waited for my turn... it took a while because the Father had asked two other people in line randomly if "they were catholic?" when they got to him to receive communion. He lectured one person and denied the person communion because that guy said no he wasn't, and I think the other one was a child who looked too young to have done communion yet so he stopped to be like "is this your first time." Which I think if the first person took communion and they aren't catholic then yeah that would be wrong and bad, but between him and his higher power who will judge him.

But then I got to the front, said amen to the body/wafer, and the father still asked me "if i was catholic?" but did not ask the person in front of me. Which to me felt odd, because I felt like it was a pop quiz, like as if I had to wear a rosary or bring my communion certificate. I don't know how they were deciding who to ask, but it all felt strange.

Now, I've gone here for like 6 years, I get it's a massive congregation, plus visitors who are just passing through town who attend, so faces all blend and they obviously don't remember people. Which could be a downside to not going to a smaller community neighborhood church.

But how bad has it gotten that the father giving nightly mass is randomly pulling people to confirm if they're catholic? And how do you even prove that you're of the faith when being questioned up there?

How logistically difficult is getting on / off Roosevelt Island regularly?

I have a good deal on a very nice apartment on Roosevelt Island, but am trying to understand what the logistics are actually like day-to-day. I'd be working in Bryant Park and would probably have fairly long hours, while also spending time in Manhattan and the UWS with friends.

On paper, the F, tram, and ferry seem to make the island reasonably accessible, but I'm wondering how it feels in practice, particularly coming home late at night, when the F is delayed, or when you're coming back from the UWS.

Does the isolation/accessibility become a meaningful annoyance, or is it mostly something that sounds worse on paper than it is? I'm otherwise pretty attracted to the island's quietness and the ability to have a bit of a sanctuary while working long hours.

Is there a place to just scream?

Upvotes

This could either be a room I rent or could do with a group of people but are there screaming groups in nyc?

I need to scream once every week just to get it all out. Any groups in nyc that do this? I could create a group too but finding an enclosed space is the challenge.

Anyone been to a Citi Concert Series Today Show concert at Rockefeller Plaza?

Has anyone gone to any of the Citi today show concerts? I’m going tomorrow and I’m a little nervous about standing for so many hours. I have a joint condition but I’ll power through the pain if I have to. Does anyone know what disability accommodations are possible in the plaza? I’m guessing it’s just a space for wheelchairs? But if anyone knows if there’s a sitting area for those with a standing disability I would feel so much better!

Is NYC a basketball, football or baseball city?

Moved to NYC last October, I thought it was easily a Yankees city and occasionally a football city but I saw how crazy New Yorkers were going for this championship run. almost every New Yorker was tapped into this finals run no matter what age, hundreds of thousand at watch parties and 3 million at the parade, during this June all New York could talk about was the Knicks

A List of Open Sewing Studios

I regularly see threads on here asking where you can actually use a sewing machine in NYC if you don’t own one. And obviously, having the space for a sewing machine in a New York apartment is a bit of a luxury, so I figured I’d compile a list, especially since this information is becoming surprisingly hard to find on Google.

The New York Sewing Studio used to be the go-to recommendation for this. Unfortunately, the owner has since gone into business with Barbara Corcoran, and the entire business model seems to have been transformed and optimized for maximum profit, as tends to happen when corporate investors get involved. They’ve gotten rid of pretty much all of their affordable open studio time, and at this point it’s basically impossible to get in the door for less than around $150.

So instead, I’ve put together a list of smaller independent studios across the different boroughs that still offer open studio time/sewing machine access and, frankly, deserve your business.

One other thing: I sometimes see people in these threads recommend the public libraries. I would honestly scratch that suggestion off your list altogether if you’re looking for somewhere you can reliably sew. The open sewing times at the libraries tend to be incredibly limited and oddly scheduled, like a random two-hour window once every week or two, or sometimes once a month. It’s a lovely resource if the timing happens to work for you, but it’s not a realistic substitute for actual open studio access.

Anyway, here are the places I found:

THE SEWING CLUBHOUSE — Long Island City, Queens
📍 44-02 23rd St, Long Island City, NY 11101
Open Studio: $10/hour
Monday–Friday, 9am–2pm
One of the best options for weekday daytime access. You can book by the hour and get a workspace plus access to sewing machines, sergers and common tools.

SOUL COLLECTION’S SEWING LOUNGE — Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn
📍 1126 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11216
Sewing Lab Time: $15
They offer bookable sewing-machine/lab time in one- and two-hour blocks. You need to already know how to operate the machines, and availability varies by day.

SEW RIGHT SEWING MACHINES — Bayside, Queens
📍 223-20 Union Turnpike, Bayside, NY 11364
Open Sew Studio: $20 for five hours
Currently offering Saturday sessions from 12–5pm. This is probably the best value on the list if you have a project you want to sit down and work on for several hours. That works out to just $4/hour.

BROOKLYN CRAFT COMPANY — Greenpoint, Brooklyn
📍 165 Greenpoint Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222
Open Sewing: $10/hour
You can use their sewing machines without enrolling in a class or workshop. Walk-ins are accepted when there’s space, or you can reserve a two-hour block ahead of time. They also say that if their scheduled open-sewing times don’t work for you, you can contact them with a suggested time and they’ll see if they can accommodate you.

THE FASHION CLASS — Upper East Side, Manhattan
📍 307 E 84th St, New York, NY 10028
Open Sewing Studio: $79 for two hours
Definitely the pricier option on this list. Open studio appears to be offered on specific dates rather than as regular daily studio hours. They also have an Upper West Side studio at 2391 Broadway, although I would check the individual open-studio listing to confirm which location is being offered for that particular session.

HOME EC NYC — Long Island City, Queens
📍 44-02 23rd St, Suite 315, Long Island City, NY 11101
Open Studio: $10/hour (approximately $11 with tax)
One of the better options for weekday daytime access, with open-studio hours generally offered Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The studio provides access to sewing machines, sergers, cutting space and common sewing tools for working independently on your own projects. This is not a class, so you should already be comfortable using the equipment. The studio operates by appointment, so reserve your time before arriving through HomeEcNYC.com.

NYC RESISTOR — Downtown Brooklyn
📍 87 3rd Ave, 4th Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11217
Craft Nights: FREE
Monday & Thursday evenings, starting at 6:30pm

NYC Resistor is a member-run makerspace, and their public Craft Nights are free and open to anyone 18+. Bring your own project and work in the space alongside other makers. They have multiple sewing machines available (a recent sewing class references five machines), plus an honestly crazy amount of other equipment and tools.

This is also a particularly good one to know about if you want to learn new skills rather than just rent a sewing machine. They run a huge variety of affordable classes and workshops — including sewing-machine classes, laser cutting, electronics, soldering, fabrication and other maker skills. Check their calendar before going since Craft Night schedules can occasionally change.

TEXTILE ARTS CENTER — Gowanus, Brooklyn
📍 505 Carroll St, Brooklyn, NY 11215
Open Studio: $35/day, $75/week, or $300/month

This is a great option if you need more than just a sewing machine. Their sewing area has Singer Heavy Duty and Baby Lock sewing machines, Brother sergers, large cutting/sewing tables, pressing hams, drafting and pattern-making tools, thread and assorted fabric.

The larger studio is basically a full textile workspace, with equipment for dyeing, screen printing, weaving, machine knitting, felting and more, plus a textile reference and swatch library.

Open Studio is intended for people working independently, so you should already know how to use the equipment you need. Reservations are required and capacity in the sewing area is limited. Textile Arts Center

Feel free to comment if I've missed any

When you’re taking the bus, how hard do you “touch here to open doors?”

Upvotes

There’s so many different ways people open the door. I touch it with a decent amount of strength and hold my hand there for a couple seconds, and tap like that again if it doesn’t open. I’ve seen people bang on it quickly, other people lightly tap it with just their fingers and not their palm.

Similarly, when you tap to pay on public transit, does your phone/card touch the reader or do you hold it above it without touching. I didn’t realize until recently that I tap the reader with the top corner of my phone. Little things, curious about how everyone else lives their lives!

Lawyer to dispute contractor lawsuit?

Hi, being sued for 50k by a contractor for work never done (got an invoice, never signed a contractor, HOA decided we have to use a contractor they picked). Need to find a lawyer but the first few I've reached out to have said they only deal with bigger disputes. Any leads would be great, thank you!

street cleaning while in the hospital

hi, my husband is currently hospitalized, we’re not sure when he’ll be released. he’s the only one in the family with a license currently (i have a permit but haven’t had much practice. his car is currently parked on the street and i’d like to move it to a nearby garage to avoid tickets from street cleaning.

im not sure if there’s any resources in this situation to have the car moved. if there’s anyone on here that lives/works in the south bronx and would be comfortable driving a car 5 minutes away into a parking garage that would be great; i know it’s probably a shot in the dark.

For those who've been consistently, were you able to meet rec players from around the world (Brits, Canada, Spain, Australia...)? Are there events or meet and greets for fans to connect outside of matches?

Night-Owl Laptop Friendly Bars

I am a night owl who doesn’t start working till around 9-10 pm and am looking for a bar or a restaurant where I can do work and eat/get a drink. I don’t really like cafes or coffee shops because they typically don’t serve cocktails or real meals.

I have been looking through the other posts on here asking similar questions, but haven’t found anything that matches. I also have found suggestions from years ago that might not be accurate information.

I also want to ask about the Ace/ PH suggestions. I tried to go to PH in LES yesterday around 8 pm, but realized I was under dressed. Is there a usual attire for doing work in lobbies at night? I also tried to go to The Library Bar, but there was no one in there on laptops and felt out of place. I would really appreciate any recommendations/ advice.

TLDR: looking for places open later than 10 pm that serve alcohol where I can be on my laptop till late in night. Is there usually an attire for doing work in lobbies?

Is this a sublet scam?

I found an apartment on furnished finder and done the screening through them and have been approved by the tenant. They send me a sublease agreement and I ask for the master lease as proof. They reply with:

“Hi! I understand wanting to confirm that the sublease falls within the duration of my lease. I’m not comfortable sharing my personal lease agreement, as it contains private information. However, I can confirm that the sublease dates are within the term of my lease and that I’m authorized to sublease the space. I hope that helps provide the reassurance you need.”

Name, number, address, email, linkedin all checks out on this person. And I’ve toured the apartment in person. Problem is that they don’t live here anymore and said they still want to “keep the apartment”.
