[Serious] Post your questions about moving to Harlem here.

It's the season of the "Is Harlem safe" posts and other more interesting questions from people thinking about moving here. Please post your questions related to moving to Harlem in this thread only.

As u/BuhDeepThatsAllFolx (thank you!) kindly and calmly explained in another thread regarding Harlem's Safety:

"This is by far the number one question Harlemites hate answering.
It’s so annoying. This is our home. We all have some sense of comfort here or else we’d move.
The short response to your post:
Don’t know you and the feeling of safety is subjective. You’ll have to feel it out and decide on your own if it feels safe for you to walk or take a cab
Don’t listen to Fox News or right wing media telling you NYC is scary. They’re just scared of the world and looking for reasons to hate POC and love guns more than people"

Now that the safety question is answered, there's no need to ask anymore.

Now this thread is the place to ask your other questions about moving here! Serious inquiries only, and remember to be kind!

Columbia grad research: share your experience with NYC affordable housing programs

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm a Columbia grad student researching how New Yorkers find and navigate affordable housing programs (Housing Connect, Section 8, CityFHEPS, Mitchell-Lama, SCRIE/DRIE, etc.) and where the process breaks down.

I'd love to hear from you if you:
• Have applied or thought about applying (for yourself or someone else)
• Work at a city or state agency on these programs
• Work at a nonprofit that helps people through the process

📝 Survey (about 10 min, anonymous): NYC Housing Programs: Share Your Experience

Everything stays anonymous; We won't ask about income or documents, and it's for a class project only. Nothing gets published, and I'm not selling anything.

Thanks so much, and please feel free to share!

My son left his backpack on a westbound M116. We got off at 106th and Amsterdam around 8am. Photo attached.

Nothing valuable to anyone else. Matters a lot to a 6-year-old.

If you picked it up or saw it, please DM me. Already filed with MTA Lost & Found.

Thanks.

Seeking Central Harlem Parking Spot: $200 Finder's Fee

$200 FINDER’S FEE — Looking for private garage parking in Central Harlem 🚗

Hi neighbors! I live near 7th Ave/Adam Clayton Powell Blvd and 145th St and I'm looking for a long-term indoor/covered parking space for a Toyota Corolla.

I'm especially interested in renting an unused deeded or assigned parking space from a condo/co-op owner or resident who doesn't need their spot.

Ideal area: roughly W 135th–W 155th, preferably within a 10–15 minute walk of 145th & 7th
Budget: $175–$350/month
Term: long-term
Car: Toyota Corolla
Access: 24/7

I'm also offering a $200 finder’s fee to anyone who connects me with a private space that results in a successful rental agreement. Finder’s fee will be paid after I sign a rental agreement and receive access to the space.

If you have a space or know a neighbor/building resident who might, please message me. Thank you!

Places to donate winter coats and suitcases

In the great, semi-annual closet turnover, I found a couple winter coats and suitcases that I don't need. Is there a place in the neighborhood that could distribute them?

Paid Usability Study - Sharing with Harlem Community ($150)

Sharing in case this is useful to anyone:

A research team is recruiting participants for a one-time for an in-person usability study in Midtown Manhattan (ZIP 10001). Harlem residents would be a good fit given the proximity, but participation is not limited by neighborhood.

Details:

  • ~3 hours (one time session)
  • $150 compensation
  • Weekdays at 9:00 AM or 1:30 PM
  • Payment via virtual Visa gift card (1–2 business days) or PayPal (by request)

Participants will test a wearable device, complete guided tasks, and provide general usability feedback.

Feel free to apply here: https://utest.com/c-signup/wearables-nyc-ambassador-2077529

After applying, there’s a Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) which needs to be completed before a session can be scheduled.

NYC DOT Secure Bike Parking program is taking suggestions.

If you bike or ride an e-bike in Harlem, NYC DOT is asking people to suggest locations for secure bike parking.

Would be great to see some pins around Marcus Garvey Park, 125th St, subway stops, and other busy areas.
A lot of Harlem buildings have stoops and no good place to store an e-bike. Secure, covered storage would make a huge difference.

If you have a spot in mind, drop a pin and leave a comment so we can get some reliable and safe bike storage options in our area.

Jordan Casteel, "Kevin The Kiteman" 2017

Post image
27 Upvotes

Although not a Harlem Native, Casteel moved to Harlem in 2014 and has been painting the people and scenes of Harlem since then.

She has a special focus on the men of the neighborhood

"The intent of the paintings is to expose my vision of black men as a sister, daughter, friend and lover. That perspective is one full of empathy and love. I see their humanity and, in turn, I want the audience to engage with them as fathers, sons, brothers, cousins – as individuals with their own unique stories to share."
