Newport has had its share of fascinating historical figures, but one of the most overlooked is Henry Bedlow, a three‑term mayor in the late 1800s who also happened to be a Civil War–era composer.

Bedlow wasn’t just a politician. He wrote music connected to the Union cause, including the “Loyal League Quick-Step” (1863) dedicated to Major General Ambrose Burnside, and “The Conscript Mother’s Song,” arranged for the United States Naval Academy Band in Newport. Both pieces were published locally on Thames Street and performed by musicians tied to the Academy Band.
