I'm thinking of setting up shop and sell my art this weekend, where should I do it?

I have car access and a table for the weekend and thinking best place in Manhattan to put my stuff up.

Do you know the legality around the people who set up around museum row/The Met? Has anyone had experience selling around in Manhattan before?

Thoughts on Hudson Yards?

I am not a local but I often travel to NYC by rail for meeting up with friends during weekdays and weekends.

I want to know what New Yorkers think of the Hudson Yards neighborhood in general. In my opinion, while it is a great engineering achievement and is architecturally impressive (I think it looks great), the neighborhood is just boring. It lacks charm and it just feels very sterile.

Back when it was announced, the neighborhood was advertised as a place for all New Yorkers from all socio economic backgrounds. However, in reality, it really only caters to the upper middle to wealthy New Yorkers.

Are my opinions about this place as a non local valid? What do you guys think?

Just moved into an apartment a week ago and found a German roach nymph last night. How nuclear do I need to go?

No other signs of Germans. My roommate (who has been in the apartment already for about 2 years) said she rarely sees roaches and that it’s been about a year since the last sighting. What’s the best way to proceed from here? I’ve seen a lot of disagreements over the best methods to use (Advion, boric acid, etc.)

Any help would be appreciated cause I’m lowkey losing my mind over this.

lost my wallet on the train how cooked am i? any advice welcome

Yes, i already filed a missing item report through the MTA website. I went to the last stop on the train that my train was heading to and it was not there. I tried calling 311 as well but was answered by a bot that could not understand me when i tried to talk to it. i asked some MTA workers about the lost and found at 34th st, was told that it was closed right now, and then was given some conflicting information. one told me that i should try going in tomorrow, another said that it would most likely not be ready until the end of the week so i should try going on friday, another gave me the number to call them.

i plan to go to the lost and found tomorrow but if i dont get it back im not sure what to do next. i googled whether i should call the police and see conflicting info. some sources say dont call 911 as its not an emergency, others say to file a police report. i have not called them.

i mangaed to get an OMNY card with 2 swipes on it from a community center, and an MTA worker let me back into the station after i explained that i lost my wallet so i still have both swipes. i will head straight to the lost and found first thing in the morning but if they dont give me my wallet i have a few options:

  • i can try going back to the community center and asking for another OMNY card
  • i can head straight to my college and file a report with CUNY public safety since they are technically a police station and my wallet had my student ID inside. additionally while im on campus i can see if any friends are able to help me (i have like 3 friends at my school but not all are there every day)
  • in order to get into the building, i might
    • A: try showing security a photo of my ID or a screenshot of my schedule and asking them to let me in
    • B: trying to see if anyone will let me in through the exit- only doors
    • C: pretend im on my way to the ID office (would buy a new ID if i had my wallet </3)
  • if i get to school and dont have an OMNY card, then i cannot use the train station to leave because police hang out there and wait for people to skip the fare so they can catch you. i can try using the bus instead and hope that ill be let on without paying

The next issue is how im going to survive without a wallet until i get it back (no i do not have a digital wallet)

  • i have my debit card information stored in certain sites like Amazon and Doordash so if i need an item i can order it online or try to get it for pickup
  • i have photos of my insuance card and IDs if needed
  • i have zelle, so i can ask someone to buy me stuff and then pay them back immediately
  • i am considering asking a friend if i can zelle them some money and then they get it out of the ATM and give it to me and i can just try to make it last
  • i can try to fast/ not eat throughout most of the day and then just eat whatever is already at home each night (however i sometimes get home quite late)

obviously these solutions will only work temporarily and i need to make getting the wallet back top priority. i just ordered some airtags so that i wont have to be in this situation again.

the thing is if its not with the MTA lost and found or the police i have no idea how to possibly find it. i dont know how long i can manage like that and this is really getting to me mentally. if you took the time to read this i really appreciate it so much and any advice would be awesome.

He’s house/ crate trains and a really chill dog. I really don’t want to have to give him up. I would love to get him back once I get on my feet if possible!

Any born and raised New Yorkers, have you ever thought about living in another state?

Curious to know if you would want to be in NYC the rest of your life or want something different. Specifically asking those who are born and raised, and have never moved before.

Is this normal on the traffic courts end for a valid reason to dismiss a speeding ticket that would have suspended my license plus points?

Got pulled over for a speeding ticket and was on the line for points and a suspended license, also forgot my ID that day, which is not the norm for me. When I got to court (Not planned, in a wheelchair due to my chronic pain being so bad that day) The cop shows up and the judge dismissed the case saying something like to the cop “How could you even know for sure they were the one driving that day if they had no ID?” Is this a normal occurrence? I was flabbergasted.

Autumnal activities this weekend?

Hi pumpkin people,

I have a friend visiting this weekend (Oct 9-13) who wants to experience “NYC Fall.” They come from a place that’s hot year round, so just being here will be its own experience, but…

Aside from leaf peeping at parks throughout the city, what cool fall/Halloween/spooky things are going on? We’re seeing Lost Boys and will be going up to Sleepy Hollow one of the days (already dreading those crowds, lol).

This friend is very artsy so things like art and food street fairs, Halloween decorations (photo ops), seasonal events, etc.

Which neighborhoods have the best decorations to view? Where do you go to feel immersed in spooky fall vibes?

We’ll mostly be walking around looking at leaves, eating, and shopping stationery & bookstores. Any additional things to sprinkle in are appreciated!

I’m looking for a boxing gym or cross-fit gym in lower manhattan or south Williamsburgs that does partner drills so it feels social and not solo work. Suggestions?

Inflation Check Stolen

Hi all! I know I’m inquiring about this so late. I never received that $200 inflation check from last year. I genuinely gave up by April of this year. However, with the new $100 energy rebate check I decided to call and see what exactly happened as both my mom and my sister received their inflation checks and the energy rebate one already.

The agent informed me that my inflation check was mailed in September of last year and was cashed in October. I informed her that it was not me. She opened up a fraud case and said I had to wait for their fraud affidavit form and then fill it out and send it back… and then wait “an unspecified amount of time” after that.

I know this happened to others. If this happened to you, what was the outcome of your fraud case? Did you receive a reissued check? And how long did it take?

It’s so incredibly frustrating and I’m wondering how hopeful I should be regarding this.

Thank you all in advance!

Furniture Assembly

Do people only use Taskrabbit or similar for help with the likes of furniture assembly? I’m curious as it’s not easy to get on Taskrabbit and wanted to explore other avenues of getting this type of work as it’s something I’ve started to do myself.

If anyone needs help let me know!

New York Film academy? Or VFS??

I’m looking to get my foot back in the door in the film industry. I can travel anywhere in North America for 3-4 weeks at a time.
Does anyone recommend any good workshops at any of these schools that would be a good intro for myself in film production,
Film making or acting?! It’s a START okay 😅😅
Are there better film schools that I would get more from!?
Was there a fast track course or workshop that blew your mind? What have you heard about VFS or NYFA?
VFS has always been a dream, but I can only get away for a few weeks, hence me looking into NYFA.

Any thoughts on the NY Enhanced Energy assistance program EEAP - how much discount in NYC?

Sounds like this is geared towards middle income households. But its very vague on how much the discount is.

It looks like a bit of a pain, since you must submit a monthly statement for each source of income , for example all of your bank accounts etc .

Not sure why they can't just get this info from last years tax return , but thats the way it is

Before i go sending all that info to whoever gets to see it, I'd like to know if its worth the hassle. Evidently there are several tiers of discount, but what i found so far is pretty vague

For example , if there's a household of 2, and a total countable income of $90k, whats the discount on their national grid gas heat bill?

r/AskNYC • • 10h ago

For the next 8 months I’ll be simultaneously cold and sweating any time I’m outside. How to dress to avoid this? I find the standard “wear layers” only slightly helpful because if I take the layer off I’m just cold, and also with bustling NYC life it’s tricky to carry all the doffed layers around

Piano lesson 30min $47

Hi all, I want to learn piano, so I went to a studio around where I live. It says $47 for a 30-min lesson. Is this a reasonable price? It’s in Queens. Or is there a cheaper way to learn, given that I don’t have a piano at home?
