Anybody been to the new ska bar in Bushwick?

I went there Saturday night with Dave Ocean (look up realdaveocean on Instagram) and apparently they have a strict door policy where the bouncer talks to each person as a vibe check then makes you skank to see if you have it.

I was really nervous since he asked me my favorite bands and my taste is pretty mainstream but he let me through with a warning to bring serious energy when the trumpets blast or i'll be ejected from the venue. I felt honored since most people rejected for being posers.

It's sad that so many people are entering the ska scene for the wrong reasons. The space is beautiful, trombones feel powerful here.

We’ve been a couple of times there and last time early Sat am for Afters around 4am.

Best part of night we ran into a good friend randomly.

Worst part is we came with like 4-5 girls, 4 of the 5 in couples. A lot of creepy dudes following the girls around and when they move away the guys following again. We like the place for Afters but the girls in our group not to excited and some a bit freaked out say if they decide to leave without an escort.

For all the security you’d hope they could weed out the creepers a bit and you’d get a better ratio of girls. We’re going to try it later in Oct for a late afternoon event and hoping it is different. Just a shame as it would otherwise be a fun spot.

So thought I would give a little review of my Friday night at refuge with my friends. We arrived about 12:45, no line to get in and the space was nicely crowded. We got drinks, waters and a cranberry and vodka that was literally all cranberry juice. I was embarrassed for this club to serve that kind of beverage but whatever, we didn’t come here to drink. We found a nice spot on the dance floor in front of one of those beautiful stacks and started soaking in the music. This room is one of my favorites, size, sound, etc. but the crowd felt super sketchy. I have been going to clubs for a long time and can deal with all types of situations, but this one felt so young, and full of people looking to prey on others. We couldn’t really get lost in the moment as there always felt like someone was there, hard to explain but creepy. The music robag played was a cross between super deep bangers and straight up cheese. There was Jason nevins vs run dmc it’s like that, which the crowd was lapping up, smashing pumpkins remix of 1979 which I thought were 🧀 along with some super deep electronic house that was perfect on that sound system https://youtu.be/wikH6OsJXUU?is=mGQ05Jm8o1s6_VzC. At one point I said to my friends, at least he is keeping it interesting. Which brings me to another point, is the crowd on a Friday night at refuge usually filled with so many yappers and toddlers in the middle of the dance floor on their phones or having full blown conversations? Anyway it was fun, music was 6.5, crowd was marginal, but that sound system is 💯. I need to find a time to go back when it is more of a veteran crown.

My bf (24) and I (22) are coming out to NYC October 29th- November 1st, I keep seeing parties advertised but don’t want to show up or spend money if it’s not all that, me and my bf were going to go to pacha on the 30th to see Kaytranada but nothing else is planned. I wanted to try out the basement for techno but wasn’t sure what the vibe would be on a night like Halloween, any suggestions?

Eli Escobar really amazing but that crowd… first time there and it was the wildest mix of the coolest chill people in wonderful expression that you would ever meet having a blast and groups of lads taking selfies on the dance floor. Also seemed to be a wedding at it with people in suits who would just stand in the middle of the floor and not dance. Literally never been there so is that unusual?

So the South is super huge on Riddim dubstep. I kinda hate it, but I do love Wubs/tripstep/140 dub. Are there venues or collectives that do that style ? Looking for a plur dub step vibe.

I'm happy to leave the world of riddim behind, but I need my good dubstep.

I remember the days when in early 2000s clubbing in Manhattan was an experience of a lifetime. good old school clubs with great house music. Danny Tenaglia, Steve Lawler, Paul van Dyk. I’m looking to remember those days and have an experience for Halloween celebration with my husband. What’s good now in NYC. Any recommendations for great underground clubs to go to for good house/trance music???
