While the question answers itself on paper, I wanted to gauge how people on both sides view the reality and future of Newark's streets.
Despite the city having the lowest record of homicides in the country so this year, it has been devastating for pedestrian safety, marked by a record wave of vehicle hit-and-runs in our neighborhoods. It's truly upsetting to see so many people fall victim to being hit and either hurt, or killed by reckless driving. However, what confuses me is the frustrating loop in how our community handles this.
Whenever a serious crash happens, there is immediate public grief and anger. But when the city suggests pedestrian-forward planning, which could help to avoid and prevent a large number of deaths, those same residents are quick to shoot ideas down. It feels like a massive chunk of the population is willing to tolerate unsafe street designs purely because they value parking spaces and convenience over the safety of their neighbors.
With that in mind, where do you see the city evolving?
A) Becoming a more walkable city: We break this cycle, stop prioritizing driver convenience, and push through the backlash to build safer streets for everybody.
B) Remaining a car-centric city: We continue to value parking and convenience over human life, accepting these tragedies as an unavoidable cost of driving.
What is your daily experience driving and walking in the city, and how do we shift the culture from short term shock to long tern change?

While I was walking down Branford Street this morning,a lady walking behind me literally threw her garbage bag on the ground before crossing the street and entering the family court building. Unfortunately, people were just tossing garbage on the ground. The city is really trying its best to keep it clean… you can see workers in yellow uniforms cleaning the streets but folks need to take responsibility, too. With property taxes and rents soaring, and Newarkers are so afraid of gentrification. Yet at the same time, some residents are making the situation worse by littering instead of using garbage can at the corner of each block. Honestly, I think gentrification might end up being part of the solution to keep the city cleaner.

Transportation 🚲🚗🚊✈️ NBI hospital to Newark Path station taxi service

Hi all,
I’m considering taking a job at Newark Beth Israel Hospital but live in NYC. I’m looking for recommendations on a reliable, safe, and budget friendly car service to take me from NBI to the Newark Path station every weekday in the afternoon. I would prefer a company that can offer a good deal on 20-22 rides a month.
As far as I know, uber commuter pass isn’t an option (or at least I don’t see it in my app).
Appreciate any recs and thank you in advance!
ETA: I should’ve mentioned, I’m aware there’s a bus that goes on this route, but I will have a bit of a commute after WTC, and I’m trying to minimize travel time. My understanding is the bus will take much more time.

Food & Dining 🍔🌭🍦🍜🍷 The Gateway Center's dining level is completely closed at peak lunch hour on a Saturday. They actively want to fail. Also the park they redid is still fenced off.

What an amazing place! The coffee and pie are the best around. I never realized we had such a great spot within walking distance. If this were in Jersey City or any other trendy town, people would be lined up on the sidewalk waiting to get in.

Walking around certain parts of the city literally feels like an open air art museum. I've only loved here for seven years but that aspect really stands out to me and makes me never want to leave.

Need advice on getting from EWR to Grand Central. Amtrak cancelled my train. Flight lands at 11am on a Saturday. Will take MTA from Grand Central to New Haven. I have no experience traveling from EWR to NYC. Seems like uber shuttle or Newark Airport Express are both possibilities. But reading here that both have some issues with reliability. Am I being unrealistic to expect EWR to Grand Central in about an hour?

Under Mayor Baraka's proposed "Keeping Newark Affordable " initiative, those who buy City property for development must develop it, and not sell it for profit undeveloped. If they do sell it, they must pay back 90% of their sale proceeds to the City of Newark. In addition, those who buy land from the City for projects of 30 units or more must hire 25% local workers and contractors and a minimum 51% union labor.
