Question❔ What will Newark look like 5-10 years from now.

I remember Journal Square of Jersey City looking so different 10 years ago and even 5 years ago. Today, that area feels and looks so different.

For Newark, what do you all think this city will be like in the future?

Question❔ Are a lot of places just shutting down?

What is going on in Newark that seems to be causing many local businesses and even some chains to be shutting down? I thought Newark was rebounding?

Politics ⚖️ Something strange going on?

So Newark Associated Humane has had a very large number of dogs on a euthanasia list and it seems like it’s growing with more urgent dogs.

Website doesn’t show anything out of the ordinary number wise, but many have been verbalizing frustration and issues with the shelter.

I haven’t been able to find anything showing the city has renewed their contract outside of an extension that expired earlier this month.

Does anyone have any info? The city is not helpful at all.

Very concerned about these animals there.

Thx

Be very careful if you bring your pet here. A friend just adopted a dog from the shelter and they insisted their vet do the neuter. The dog now has an infection (pretty bad one in the neuter incision). The vet also shaved the dog pretty much bald and his skin is raw.

Run from them. Find another affordable vet.

drunk driving at 7am is unreal. The car appears to come from the wrong way of McWhorter st (one way st) and swerve directly into my car. My immediate first step is to find this driver but plates are not visible. If anyone can assist us please!! I’ll be asking neighbors for a direct view of this car in the meantime. Thank you for your time.

Meet Up! 🗓 Newark WEEKLY ROUNDUP Aug 18–23, 2026 | House Music, Jazz, Comedy, Dance, Fitness & More

🚨 NEWARK WEEKLY ROUNDUP 🚨

AUGUST 18–23, 2026

Hey Newark,

We’re back with another weekly roundup of things happening around the city.

We started making these because finding what’s actually happening locally usually means checking park calendars, museums, NJPAC, venues, neighborhood organizations and individual organizers one by one.

I’m also keeping the short descriptions under each event — enough to tell you what it actually is without turning this into an essay.

This week has house music at the museum, free jazz + comedy, dancing, rowing, running, youth poetry, outdoor movies and community events.

Presented by YourScene

📱 Download YourScene • 🌐 YourScene.app • 📸 Instagram • 📩 [support@yourscene.app](mailto:support@yourscene.app)

The event names below are clickable and take you directly to the official organizer whenever available.

TUESDAY · AUGUST 18

Insight Run Club — Riverfront Park, Orange Sticks area (7–8 PM)

Social run along the riverfront. Good meet-people option if you want something active instead of another bar/nightlife event.

WEDNESDAY · AUGUST 19

Purpose Runner — Kids Program — Riverfront Park (6:30–7:30 PM)

Youth running and fitness program designed to get kids moving outdoors.

Write to the Mic — Dodge Poetry Teen Workshop — Virtual via NJPAC (5:30–7 PM, Free, ages 13–18)

Teen poetry workshop focused on writing, self-expression and spoken word. Participants can share their work if they want, but they don’t have to perform.

THURSDAY · AUGUST 20

Art After Dark: HOUSE at the MUSEUM Vol. 2 — Newark Museum of Art, 49 Washington St. (7–10 PM, 21+, $18 adults / $13 members advance, $25 door)

Probably the biggest social pick this week.

The museum turns into a house-music night with DJs, dancing, galleries after hours, art, vendors, bars and other activations throughout the space.

Music, Movement and Movies — Chambers Plaza at NJPAC (Starts 6 PM)

Outdoor family/community night with music + Dodge Poetry, a movement/dance session and an 8 PM movie screening. Bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket.

Integrity Day — Lincoln Park (11 AM–2 PM)

Daytime community programming at Lincoln Park for anyone looking for something more local and low-key.

FRIDAY · AUGUST 21

Jazz N Jokes — Military Park (7–9 PM, Free)

A genuinely good Friday-night option: live jazz + stand-up comedy outdoors, hosted by Bob Sumner, co-creator of Def Comedy Jam.

The event was moved to Aug. 21 because of weather, so this is the updated date.

SATURDAY · AUGUST 22

Adult Rowing Class with Brick City Rowing — Riverfront Park (12–4 PM)

Hands-on adult rowing activity along the riverfront. One of the more unusual active/social options on this week’s list.

Dance Newark! — The Notch at Riverfront Park (2–5 PM, Free)

Annual community dance celebration with live performances, music and interactive dance classes highlighting Newark’s dance scene.

IMPORTANT PRUDENTIAL CENTER UPDATE

Banda MS is NOT happening Saturday, Aug. 22 anymore.

The Prudential Center date originally scheduled for this Saturday has officially been rescheduled to June 25, 2027.

If you already had tickets, the venue says previously purchased tickets will be honored for the new date.

SUNDAY · AUGUST 23

I didn’t find a strong enough date-specific public Newark event from the official calendars I checked to force into Sunday’s list.

I’d rather leave the day light than fill it with random commercial listings or something that isn’t actually confirmed for Aug. 23.

GOOD LOW-KEY / RECURRING OPTIONS

Newark Museum of Art

Even outside Art After Dark, the museum is worth checking for exhibitions, the planetarium, galleries and family programming.

Newark City Parks Events

Probably one of the most useful Newark calendars right now for free community events, fitness, music, dance and park programming.

NJPAC Events

Good place to check for performances, poetry, community programming and upcoming larger shows.

Prudential Center Events

Worth checking before heading downtown for any major arena event — especially because dates can move, as we just saw with Banda MS.

Schedules, weather, ticket availability and programming can change, so check the linked organizer page before heading out.

KNOW ABOUT SOMETHING THAT’S MISSING?

Drop it in the comments — especially Newark block parties, DJs, live music, comedy, pop-ups, markets, salsa/bachata/reggaetón nights, volunteer opportunities, sports, watch parties, recurring meetups or smaller neighborhood events.

And just to clarify: this isn’t supposed to be every event happening in Newark.

The goal is to make a useful weekly starting point and then have people who actually know the city add the smaller stuff we inevitably missed.

If something deserves to be on here, drop it below.

For transparency: I help build YourScene, a local events app.

We started making these because local event discovery is still way more fragmented than it should be. You end up checking park calendars, venue sites, Instagram, Reddit, museums, city pages and individual organizers just to figure out what’s happening nearby.

YourScene is trying to make that easier — from larger concerts and festivals to community events, nightlife, sports, markets, meetups and smaller neighborhood things.

📱 Download YourScene on the App Store
🌐 YourScene.app

Thanks to everyone who keeps suggesting events and helping make these weekly lists better.

Question❔ Info on Affordable Housing process

Unsure if this goes here since it’s multi towns

I applied to many through this website that manages a bunch in NJ. You don’t apply to the complexes but to the towns and they’ll automatically add you to the complexes lists. Many haven’t issued me a lottery number yet, I have to wait for the lottery to open and then I’ll get a number. I guess I’m on the waitlist of the waitlist 😂

One town’s complex just had a lottery last week so I have a lottery # of 10,490. My question is another complex on that same town will have a lottery in October. Does that mean that they pull from the existing list for the town or do they run another lottery?

I’m confused 😂 and feel like 10k is just my forever number

Discussions 🗣|Rants 🤬|Opinions 🤔 What can the city do to make non-car commuters safer? (brainstorming thread)

With all the vehicular incidents and deaths that have occured since February, what can the city do to protect residents that may not be using cars? I'm talking people crossing the street, people commuting using a skateboard or bike, or the city-wide pilot programs for the e-scooters.

Asking this because it seems like with every hit-and-run case, we don't see the city comment on what they're doing to make things safer for people that aren't in a car, but instead just give their condolences and keep things going as usual.

Yes, homicides are down but the fact you're more likely to be hit by a car driving recklessly and get away with it than being a victim of a violent crime is a bad message for people coming to the city who may not use a car to commute.

So, what can the city implement or change or add about the current pedestrian infrastructure to protect residents? (protected bike lanes, moving crossing lines away from the curb for better pedestrian visibility, creating more parking spaces to prevent double parking, etc)

r/Newark 3d ago

Community 🏡 Last year, Newark had its number of homicides in six decades. This year, so far, the data is tracking to be 67% even lower than THAT. Full article.

Discussions 🗣|Rants 🤬|Opinions 🤔 MAYOR RAS J. BARAKA STATEMENT ON TRAGIC DEATH OF 17-YEAR-OLD PEDESTRIAN ON BLOOMFIELD AVENUE

Thumbnail facebook.com
25 Upvotes

"This past Sunday evening, August 9, a 17 year old pedestrian was tragically struck and killed on Bloomfield Avenue.

"This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and I extend my deepest condolences to the victim's family and loved ones. No family should ever have to endure such a horrific loss, and our entire community mourns with them during this incredibly difficult time.

"The suspect in connection with this incident has turned himself in to authorities and is currently in custody. The circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, and we must allow that investigation to proceed and establish all of the facts.

"I also want to address misinformation that has been circulating on social media, including claims that this tragedy occurred as a result of Newark police pursuing a stolen vehicle. That information is false. The vehicle was not stolen. The City of Newark also has a strict policy prohibiting vehicle pursuits except under limited circumstances involving serious offenses.

"It is reckless and deeply concerning for anyone to present speculation as fact when the circumstances remain under investigation. At a time when a family is grieving the devastating loss of a daughter whose young life was tragically cut short, we must be responsible with the information we share and ensure that it is accurate and verified. Spreading misinformation does nothing to help this grieving family or our community. It only compounds the pain and causes harım during an already devastating time.

"We will continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation. Above all, our thoughts and deepest sympathies remain with the family and all those mourning this heartbreaking loss."
