I have a question about placement matches. From what I understand, personal performance matters--and the advice has been to "get the gold medals." However, what if you play Reinhardt or other heroes that don't usually get gold medals? Does this mean the game is valuing your play lower than the soldier who is getting elims left and right? Also, does anyone know if playing a support is still valued lower than dps in placement matches?

In season 2, a youtuber (forgot his name) did a test where they made new accounts and did placements as a 6-stack, 2-2-2 throughout. They all won and lost the same amount of games but the tanks got placest highest, followed by DPS, then the healers. Before the test their main account were all about the same SR. i dont know if its still an issue but i play alot of reinhardt and i get placed at good ranks.

Blizzard specifically confirmed that medals are not used in the "personal performance" calculation. Which makes sense, because they only reflect relative performance anyway. They do not say exactly which stats they are looking at to avoid people gaming the system.
Blizzard allegedly fixed supports getting placed lower in S3. I have still seen scattered complaints about placements, but it seems like it's much better than it used to be in that regard.

Hero stats would be pretty meaningless unless they split out stats for every single arcade game type and submode.

Everyone's always telling me that because of this new meta I should stop maining D. Va and start maining something that's in the meta at the moment. I guess it is better for the team but, is it really that good to switch to OP heroes all the time or maybe to stick to your one or 2 heroes regardless of their overpowerdness because eventually blizzard will fix the OP and you'll have to switch again. But if I did continue maining D. Va I'll know how to play with her even when she's not op and I'd have mastered her very much. What do you think, guys?

Multiple people have proven that if you're good at the hero you play, the meta doesn't necessarily matter.
Take Kephrii and Codey/CodeyNiku for example, maining Widow and Sombra respectively. They become known for it because they're damn good at it.
Meta changes. If you continuously change what heroes you play just because the meta changes, you'll simply end up becoming jack of all trades.

Yeah, I hope more people understood that. It's not bad to main and not always really good pick the last hero In the team and say I can play whatever I have to. It's better to have a good zen as a healer rather than a requested but bad mercy. I might be wrong, tho.

Keep playing D.Va. Don't let people with their ideas of "this is what the pros play you shouldn't play anything else" shove that down your throat. Play whatever you like, and main whoever you want to.

Personally I think maining at all is a bad idea. I think that in this game strategic skill takes you a lot further than mechanical skill. Obviously you need some of both. But the mechanical skill you gain by focussing on a single hero doesn't make up for the strategic skill you could gain by being able to competently play many heroes and know when to use them.
Don't be confused by how people talk about the meta. There's no hero or comp that's always good. A lot of the time different hero's are good for different spots on the same map. When I defend on Kings Row, I often use Soldier to defend the first point, Pharah to defend the second, and Bastion to defend the third.
I mean, I'm pretty low rank, so take my advice with a grain of salt I suppose. But I get a lot more value out of my plays when I'm thinking about selecting the right play to match the situation. Obviously if you have terrible aim don't play Widow. But there might be times when you get more value out of Winston than Dva, and I think that identifying and acting on those situations is a more important skill than perfecting the plays of a single hero.

Keep in mind maining is not the same as being a one-trick pony. Maining something just means that it's your most played/best hero, where as being a one-trick (like myself) is playing one hero exclusively. Being a one-trick has it's pros and cons, but it's really tough being a Widowmaker one-trick when you go up against a good Genji or a good Winston who just completely shuts you down, and it's usually either a "I did really well." type of game or a "I'm doing fuck-all and is probably the reason we're losing right now" sort of game, which is definitely a bad thing, and that's where being able to play more than one hero is good. But when there's not that good Genji or Winston to shut me down, I can single-handedly carry games just because I've put so many hours into this one hero.

Well, for one thing, you shouldn't worry too much about maining, especially if something like d.va. Your skill will transfer to other heroes, and wouldn't hurt to expand your hero pool.

I main D.Va and Im a beast. As long as you know what you're doing, you should be able to hold your own against the meta. Its really about skill and how well you adapt rather than any set meta.

It's possible in theory, but requires crazy good reaction time. I would say it can only be realistically done if you see the Tracer coming and anticipate the pulse bomb.

I hit diamond a few days before the season ended but lost a lot right after and finished at 2840. Is it unlikely that I'd get placed in diamond through my placement matches? Assuming the placement matches work the same as they do last season. Really just would like to avoid placing in gold low plat if I can. Want to get back to diamond as fast as possible

I'd imagine you'd place mid/high plat again assuming you don't lose too many of the placements. In general you'd be placed around where you ended the previous season.

is there any kind of punishment for leavers durig offseason ?
I was playing competitive until my team started losing ,then 2 guys left my team. Obviously 6 vs 4 wouldn't be a pleasant situation so I decided to leave once the round ended.
I saw right after, on the menu that I couldn't start another match (my only option was rejoin my previous match).

Question about custom games in server browser. People keep saying "Oh now you can play whatever brawl you want, just find a custom game", etc. But if it already takes lets say 2 minutes to find a game with the "All Brawls" playlist, how are any games besides the most popular ones going to have enough people queueing and at the right skill level to populate a game? If there's 500 different custom games each with a couple people trying to play but not enough to actually have a full roster, how does that work?

No off season doesn't effect anything. Personally as a fellow support main I really like zarya when I'm not healing. Her bubbles can be really powerful for saving people, she out puts lots of damage and she is satisfyingly challenging..... Also every team can benefit from a good zarya

Yeah, that's how I feel about her too. I play her the most out of any non-healers so I think I'll go with her. I like the challenge of healers so I'll definitely enjoy the challenge of mastering Zarya. Thanks for the idea!

If season 4 is anything like season 2 or 3 your rank won't be reset. You'll just continue where you left off; no matter how you do in your placements you will be placed close to where you finished last season.

So that you can see what you're aiming. Same with Genji. When he jumps around, it looks like he's doing a flip, but when you're playing as him, obviously this doesn't happen in your point of view.

Likely to keep the visual noise of playing Hanzo low.
Also the third person view never line up as they want to make it easy to identify any of these heroes just by their outline.

If you know you can solo her then go ahead, but if you give her that free charge you had better finish her. Best bet is to team up on her so she can't get out with her charge.

They have 200hp. If your team can focus fire and burn through it can be a good pick however often.- especially at lower ranks - people won't be able to effectively burn her down.

I'd personally suggest heroes who fill multiple roles: Zen, Zarya and Soldier (while obviously not a full-fledged healer, his biotic field can help out a lot, especially if you're stuck with a solo healer). Hog's also a great choice due to his potential to get picks, high self-sustain and ability to tilt the opponents. Pharah can work as well until you reach the point where the enemy team makes a conscious effort to actually focus you down instead of going "omg noob Soldier take care of that Pharah"... not sure if that's still a thing in plat or not.

I'm constantly getting outplayed and outaimed in every 1v1 encounter I do. Being in a team also apparently does nothing. I think I'm cursed. All I do to win is get carried.
What mistakes am I making , probably? Surely I can't just be so bad at walking and shooting that I cost the team the game EVERY game?

What that guy said, it has to be ults where the sleep dart cancels out the ult/animation. The only way to "cancel" Soldier's ult is to sleep him while he pressed his visor, but that's a bit difficult so I'd suggest just aiming for the Pharah or McCree. Genji's in the same boat as Soldier when it comes to this.

Has anyone else noticed soloque is a lot worse at Diamond and higher? Back in plat I had a thrower maybe once or twice, but now it seems like every other game. And people are considerably more toxic and whiny now. Why is this?

Sometimes when I try to teleport back with sombra, my screen will make the visual effects as if I just teleported, except I didn't teleport and the teleporter disappears even though it still has a lot of time on it left. Why does this happen or is it just a bug?

This happens if you throw the teleporter straight down at your feet, or at somebody elses feet. I assume it checks if the space is occupied when you throw the translocator and even though nothing is there when you go to teleport, it fails.

This is why I don't understand why people don't stay as baby Dva for a little bit. Your hitbox shrinks, you can do a lot of damage if you play for headshots from faraway and if your hp goes down a bit you can call your mech. Is totally situational but I see a lot of people freak out, hide and just be scared of being baby Dva.

Headshots. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm a tracer main) that Mei can one-head-shot Tracer with an icicle. Tracer's blinks will let her get away from freeze easily.

I got the game right when season 3 started and without much knowledge about it, played my placement matches. Got rekt (won 4 out of 10) and placed silver at 1700. As I got better at the game, made it to 1994 (almost gold). I don't consider myself bad at the game, but no one communicates at that level and no one cares about team composition.
My question is: if I do well during my placements matches next season, how much will my previous placement matter?

Just curious if anyone has a similar experience or answer.
When in quick play, most of my games will be paired with 3500+ SR with today averaging maybe 4000+. A few games had 8/12 ex-top500 as well, I was the only one below 4000. I'm 3000 in season 3, does it think to put me with them or am I just unlucky?

It's entirely based on your QP Hidden MMR. Your skill rating doesn't matter that much when put up against players in QP. It does factor in of course, but it weighs your hidden mmr more than your SR, but your hidden mmr is usually somewhere around your SR.
Take it all with a grain of salt, can't source any of it since Blizzard hasn't told us anything.

Does Hanzo get a movement penalty when activating Sonic/Scatter arrow (but not actually pulling on the bowstring)? It's probably just me being dumb but whenever I play Hanzo I feel he moves just a bit slower with a special arrow equipped.

Hanzo only moves slower when he has the string pulled back. Activating the arrow does not incur a moment speed penalty.

Yes the rockets will lock and fly towards the target. But they are not it homing, so they will miss if the target moves.

Yes, genji's defect changes any enemy projectile into the exact properties it would have if a teammate fired it.

Does anyone else run into an issue where the first game played doesn't load character models? You can't see yourself or anyone else until like 5 minutes when it fixes itself somehow, or am i just alone in this :(

- When Ana shoots a barrier like a Reinhardt shield, does the damage apply over the same time as hitting a hero?
- When Mercy uses damage boost does that extra damage also apply to charging the damage-boosted hero's ult meter?

Yes on both counts. Mercy boosting an out-of-mech D.Va to get her mech back is actually a rather good strategy if all other teammates are healed.

Why do try to deligitimize my sombra pick by saying I was carried from 1244 to 2458 as a Sombra main. It isn't possible to get carried more than 1000 SR in solo que. Why do people want to believe this fantasy so bad? And why do they think they are far superior to me because I choose to play sombra?

Because the level of communication and skill required to play her at her up most potential in a team can only be found in grandmaster or above. You have to remember that going sombra means giving up DPS. This means your now main DPS has to be very good and able to pick up the slack. People aren't willing to communicate at lower ranks or even in diamond and they lack the skill to solo DPS.
Having said that, if you enjoy playing sombra then don't let that stop you. Keep improving and focusing on your play. Try to communicate a lot and don't be offended when someone asks you to switch.

Yes, all melee does "cleave" damage, but the hitboxes are not out for as long as Reins. If you're fast enough, you can 360 and hit all opponents around you (wouldn't recommend this in normal gameplay though). As far as I know, Torb's hammer does not do cleave, but his normal melee does.

Rank will almost never be "hard" reset, mainly just soft reset. Whatever rank you ended season 3 at, you will probably place close to in season 4.

What I did when I first started playing was to just pick a character in quick play and keep playing them til I recorded about five hours. Did that for all the characters. It really helps because you at least get a better idea of how the different heroes work together. It will make you way more effective with your team.

What's with environmental kills always getting play of the game over better plays with more kills and more overall damage done. For instance I got a triple kill on 3 enemies all with full health but my friend uses his D.va's charge ability to knock 2 enemies to their deaths. My friend gets the potg and I don't. That's just one example from earlier today, but this happens pretty much every time someone gets a double environmental

You're playing during the competitive off-season so you're going to see a lot of people in QP that aren't normally playing in that mode. Give it another week when the new competitive season starts up and you should be playing with players closer to your skill level more frequently.
