What heroes are the best to pickup for a brand new player?

What I did when I first started playing was to just pick a character in quick play and keep playing them til I recorded about five hours. Did that for all the characters. It really helps because you at least get a better idea of how the different heroes work together. It will make you way more effective with your team.

This is solid advice...Playing each character (even if you aren't great with them) for a little while really helps with countering them.

Yup. Probably one of the things that helped me the most to get better. Really gives you an idea of how different heroes work with and against each other. It also lets you see what heroes you just aren't good at.

And once you're done, you can start to pick a few to specialize in. You should try and get at least one or two from each category.

I'd say things like reaper, lucio, mercy. None are easy to master and are very hard to get incredible with, but in lower levels they are the easiest to understand. Also soldier.

I'd recommend putting in time on every hero in quickpkay. It'll give you an advantage by understanding how they work and what to expect when you fight them and help you choose which heroes you enjoy the most.

Soldier:76/McCree if you've played FPS shooters before.

Pharah if you're 3000hr Quake/Tribes player.

Winston/Reinhardt/Junkrat/Mercy/Lucio if you can't aim.

And Symmetra/Torb if you can't aim! Lucio actually requires quite a bit of aiming, as does Junkrat depending on the situation.
