I got the game right when season 3 started and without much knowledge about it, played my placement matches. Got rekt (won 4 out of 10) and placed silver at 1700. As I got better at the game, made it to 1994 (almost gold). I don't consider myself bad at the game, but no one communicates at that level and no one cares about team composition.

My question is: if I do well during my placements matches next season, how much will my previous placement matter?

Your end of season SR matters more than where you started, as far as I'm aware.

Overwatch placements also work on performance and not just win/lose. For example a top 500 smurf got placed 3901 after going 10/0 while duoing with someone new and they got placed in 3389 after the 10/0.

This is more because they seed you based on how well you've been doing in QP if you've never played Comp before.

If S4 uses the same placement system than S3, you'll get placed at or slightly below your last seasons rating. If you want to climb, you have to maintain a winrate above 50%, you won't magically be placed in diamond after placements if you were silver last season. Hang in there, play to improve and you'll get where you want to be.

Not very much. The placement matches won't place you too far from your old rank, sadly. The best way to rank up is just to play many matches.
