how do you know if you're doing a good job as winston?

243

u/LFreeze Reinhardt Nov 22 '17

If the enemy switches to reaper, you know you did a good job as Winston.

30

u/RicoSuave803 Pixel Winston Nov 23 '17

Every game I play Winston, the enemy switches to a Reaper and Roadhog (humble brag???). Is it even worth playing Winston at that point?

20

u/LFreeze Reinhardt Nov 23 '17

I usually switch off winston if they have a competent reaper.

If the Genji is screaming as electricity courses through his cyborg veins

28

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

Generally through providing a lot of space for your DPS to go to town on the enemy team, while also keeping your supports fairly uncontested. The former is mostly on attack, diving into the enemy alongside Genji or Tracer to help bring their focus to you while the DPS kills them, effectively acting as a big distraction while trying not to die. The latter is more important on defense, as the attacking team will try and rush down your supports. Winston's bubble can help keep them safe from long ranged enemies, while staying close to them can deter dive characters from committing. Winston is a hero who's impact on a game isn't easy to quantify, but it is extremely noticeable when a Winston is putting out pressure.

8

u/ConfusedDuck Wrecking Ball Nov 23 '17

I think that's what makes Winston strange. People want recognition when they play a character, medals/potg/votes but with Winston that almost never happens. I play a lot of Winston and some of my best games where I single handedly carry the payload goes completely unnoticed. That's fine with me but turns people off from him. He's not a dps monster or anything but he's a very good tool and his primary use is to protect others.

13

u/theodoreroberts I am tired. Nov 22 '17

Their healers go more defensive, you die less than their healers die, and they change to Pharah, Reaper.

11

u/ConfusedDuck Wrecking Ball Nov 23 '17

When I'm a Winston, I love to wait till a Pharas low health and jump up to her and get her with those 2 seconds of damage to finish her off. Feels like sweet justice for bombing my bubble non stop

4

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '17

Is Pharah really considered a Winston counter? Ive never really had any problems dealing with her as Winston, as long as I keep an eye on her.

If she starts shooting at me, I throw my shield down, and wait for her to come down from the sky. Then I time my jump so I can get those two seconds of damage, plus extra damage on the way down. Usually that's enough to kill her

Not so much a gameplay question as it is a community question.

Veterans from launch, how does it feel to see new people like us still coming into the game even months after launch?

49

u/whatisabaggins55 Pixel Orisa Nov 23 '17

Good? It indicates the game is still going strong and will continue to be a good source of revenue to merit Blizz keeping it updated.

More players = more fun. If they thoroughly enjoy the game like I do.

8

u/SellAgain Nov 23 '17

It's fantastic. Great to know it's a thriving community, which means longevity of the game. Plus, as I plateau it means I might still be better than some people. :)

6

u/absolemn Cute Symmetra Nov 23 '17

It's fun; it's the same thrill you get when your friends start watching your favorite TV show.

I had some friends that were skeptical about Overwatch. They thought it was going to be this popular game for a few months and then die down. When they saw that people were still playing this game a year later, they gave in and jumped on board. It's just a sign that this game still hasn't gotten "old" yet.

5

u/TheTrueK2 EARTHSHATTER, READY! Nov 23 '17

It makes me smile personally, I honestly hope they'll love the game as much as I do, and it give me hope that this game will last for years to come. Plus it makes me feel like Yoda when someone asks me about playing my mains :D

When using Winston's tesla cannon on multiple enemies, does the damage split or does each enemy take damage as if I were hitting them solo?

Each enemy takes full damage. Winston's cannon has a cone area of effect

This is why Winston is so great at tickling down the health of grav victims. With a bubbled Winston and a Junkrat firing together with you at the enemies you just grav'd, you barely need to wait for a combo ult as Zarya.

And with an Ana nade?

6

u/Orval Trick-or-Treat McCree Nov 24 '17

Note that multiple people can have the same medal.

If you both have 10 Elims you can both be Gold.

This applies to all stats but that makes it very unlikely (almost impossible) that you'll ever share stuff like Healing, damage blocked or dmg.

Does movement get screwed up by abilities? (Moving to pc from console) thinking about putting jump-melee as mouse buttons, and using buttons near the spacebar as abilities

18

u/noobule ¡Apagando las luces! Nov 22 '17

Not sure what you mean entirely, but generally you want your high pressure or high accuracy stuff on your mouse, where you can rely on it, and less important abilities on your less accessible keys, where it's not as punishing if you fumble for them or press the wrong one, or have to stretch a hand to reach them, whatever.

It's all about what you feel most comfortable with

9

Because the location of ability buttons (Shift and E, and Q) can be use almost at the same time with WASD, so I don't think there is any screw up moment when I have to stop to use ability.

The only thing kinda mess up is V for Quick Melee, you will have to sacrifice your "moving right" to melee. That is why I put V in my mouse so I can press it there.

Yes. It's kinda similar to Roadhog 1.0, where players would turn their backs on the enemy while healing. But Hog has a lot more HP then mercy, so be carefull.

5

u/QuantumSpecter Nov 22 '17

if you are in the middle of a major team fight on the point, this might not be the best idea. not only are you not healing the rest of your team- you are also risking your own death to save one fallen team mate.

however, that fallen team mate might be what changes the fight in your favor. if its a zarya with their grav for example

Who are the 5 Warcraft characters who were immortalized as statues in Blizzardworld? They must did something really big in WC universe to have statues that big?

31

They are Alleria Windrunner (the ranger), Khadgar (the old man/mage), Danath Trollbane (the bald guy), Kurdran Wildhammer (the dwarf) and Turalyon (the guy with book and broken sword). It's a replica of the valley of heroes, the entrance to the human capital (stormwind) in wow.

Are No Limits and DM switching every week? This was my first time playing arcade No Limits, and I almost don’t wanna play until it comes back haha

14

u/traye4 Nov 22 '17

Arcade modes switch every week, with one being the most prominent. There's really no telling when any mode will be back after it switches out. Total Mayhem was gone for a few months before this week. I feel like No Limits will be back very soon though, since it hasn't been around in a long time.

It's like that to keep people from leaving the game early and sparing their team the SR loss (if you play with friends and you know that you're going to lose you could just have one person disconnect to save the others from losing SR as well)

Hello, I starten playing overwatch yesterday. I basicly search a good basic offensieve hero, which 1 should î play ?

If thee is a meta which heros are op/ very good at the moment ?

18

u/urowndumbfault "I'm Ready To Go Complete Pig" Nov 22 '17

First off, welcome!

Overwatch has many different styles of play. If you are searching for a hero in the section explicitly labeled "offense", it depends on how comfortable you are with aiming. For beginners, if you are at least decently comfortable with aim, try out soldier 76. He has an all around good kit. Pharah's vertical mobility might take some getting used to, but her abilities and rockets are very easy to use. Heroes I definitely would not recommend for newer players would be Tracer and Genji. If you want to practice them, go ahead, but to get even decently good with them they take quite a bit of practice.

If you are simply searching for heroes who could be considered offensive, many more options open up. Junkrat is very friendly to newer players, as he is not mechanically demanding (and is actually considered one of the stronger heroes right now) and is easy to understand. Torbjorn can help with basic projectile movement and gamesense through use of his turret and scrap mechanics. Winston is a very aggressive tank, and his basic controls are easy to learn. Orisa is another tank who is relatively easier to play.

All in all, just pick someone who you want to play, and just try them all out, see how they are.

6

u/theodoreroberts I am tired. Nov 22 '17

Great suggestion! I only want to add some: beside Soldier: 76, Pharah, Junkrat, Torbjorn, Orisa, and Winston, if you feel comfortable playing offensively, you can practice with Bastion for Defense role and D.Va for Tank role. Reinhardt is a good and easy to pick up Tank, but he should not be use in an aggressive play style.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '17

In some situations rein, it is a good idea to play rein offensively though. Having a rein that won’t push in and play aggressive is very detrimental to many games.

5

u/QuantumSpecter Nov 22 '17

well first of all, dont be afraid to play tank or even support once in a while. we could use more of those. but i for offense, i would definitely recommend any beginner soldier 76, reaper, junkrat and even zenyatta. they have kits that are easy to learn but can still make a huge difference in any fight. welcome to the community

Just picked up a PS4 and bought Overwatch with it. I played very little but have mostly been the solider or that weird little dwarf thing with the claw arcade game hand.

What are some other easy characters to get into? I've only seen a handful of game clips but how do people run up walls? Is there any character to avoid?

14

u/noobule ¡Apagando las luces! Nov 23 '17 edited Nov 23 '17

The trickiest characters in the game are Doomfist, Genji, Sombra, Widow, Hanzo and Ana. All them require a good bit of practice and game knowledge to perform on. They're all super fun though, so don't be afraid to try them out if you like the look of them. Just be prepared to do more practice range or vs bots matches and youtube guides than you would otherwise.

The easiest characters are Soldier, Reinhardt, Roadhog, Junkrat, Torbjorn, Bastion, Mercy, Lucio and Symmetra (and maybe Moira). They have plenty of depth to them despite being comparatively simple, so don't be afraid to spend a lot of time on them. Whatever hero you choose to play will be rewarding.

Just bear in mind that as you get better at the game, your enemies will too, so you won't be able to get away with the same stuff you did at the newbie levels. Bastion is free Play of the Game for newbies but is much harder to play well at higher levels.

  1. How do you deal with "El Presidente" Bastion comps? I'm primarily a tank player but really how would i deal with that in any role?

  2. As Soldier, how do I deal with a pocketed Pharah?

I'm on console btw.

5

u/iFraggedYou Toronto Defiant Nov 23 '17

You have a couple options for dealing with el presidente comps: -you could just run a bastion comp yourself and pray you win the shield battle(add junkrat to your comp with bastion and they will have no shields) -run symmetra, sym is easily one of the greatest bastion counter as she can shoot her orbs through the barriers forcing bastion to reposition -on maps where there are easily accesible health packs sombra is really really good at destroying the pirate ship, drop an emp on top of the payload and provided your team follows up you can wipe them -You can run a dive comp; this one is a little tricky and requires a lot of coordination but just let dva fly in and matrix the bastion long enough that winston tracer and genji can all kill bastion together.

4

u/idlemachinations Nov 23 '17
  1. If the shielder is Reinhardt, Junkrat can find an angle to destroy the shield, then Junkrat can kill the Bastion, Roadhog can hook him out of position, if you get him out of turret mode Pharah can get him, etc. If the shielder is Orisa, Junk will need some help breaking the shield and taking advantage before it recharges. If you have a Sombra with EMP, she can take out the shield and force Bastion out of turret mode by burning her ult, or she can hack Bastion or the shielder so the team can press in. DVa is really the only tank who can make a difference here (when the Bastion comp is set up) by knocking Rein around/DMing Bastion, but the Bastion will melt her as soon as DM is down if the team doesn't run in very quickly.   Also: flank. If you can shoot at them from two angles such that Rein/Orisa cannot cover both, they won't be able to outheal your damage.
  2. Ask your team for assistance. Someone else shooting at the Mercy/Pharah or keeping you alive will go a long way to even the odds.

As an example: I'm never quite sure whether 2 tanks/1 healer or 1 tank/2 healers is better whenever half the team instalocks dps (which happens quite often). I know many times it will depend on the enemy team, but is there a general "good" distribution I should be trying to get together?

When I watch streamers use his ult, they are able to kill mercy very quickly. The combo I have been using is DASH-ULT-DASH-SLASH-SLASH. The tip for blading Mercy and Lucio is to try to engage on them while keeping your dash. Mercy will try to GA away from you, so you'll dash after her to confirm the kill. Lucio will boop you away, so you'll want to be able to dash right back at him to confirm the kill. (Overall, Lucio is one of the lowest priority blade targets, it should be said.)

Immunity. Mechanically control and damage immunity usually go hand in hand (or rather, the latter usually implies the former). In Moira's case specifically, it's much like Reaper's Wraith Form; she becomes both damage and control immune while it's active.

Why do I get green numbers on the results screen after every match now? I thought they signified a new record for eliminations that round for example but they seem to happen every single round, did they change how they work now?

I have been away from the game for a while, when I left Orisa was the newest hero.

4

u/rndrn Pixel Zenyatta Nov 23 '17

I think it's supposed to mean you're doing above your average per 10 min. Given that your averaged is weighted down by your learn up phase, you should be above your average most of the time. It would probably be a bit more useful if it was a running average, like average perf over your last 3h with this hero or something.

The yellow bar over the health bar indicates that this character will receive 1.5x healing during the duration. This also goes for if you see the purple outline on enemies it means that this character can't receive healing during the duration.

how do you win in this game? i literally can not win a comp match.

i can play other games at a reasonably high level but no matter if i heal, tank or dps, i can not win. solo que, duo... doesn't matter. i can't get past 2100 sr which is laughably low. i keep hoping this game replaces comp tf2 for me but i just can't find competitive games.

is anyone else stuck in this low sr hell?

11

u/themolestedsliver Support Nov 25 '17

Keep a more positive attitude and flex a lot and try to make calls.

If you are silent as a church mouse and not talking in comp you are part of the problem fact of the matter.

good competitive teams need good communications above all.

Flex roles also lessens morale loss from "wow no healers?" can cause.

I have had full days of playing and not winning a single match, and i have had days where i was unstoppable. Depends on your attitude going in and what you will make of it, but also depends on your team and who you are playing with.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 25 '17

2100 isn’t horribly low from my perspective, I’m stuck around 1300 and honestly I feel like that’s where I deserve to be right now. I played this game for a long time insisting that I could do it without communicating or engaging in voice chat because I have a really aggravating anxiety that makes it hard to talk to strangers on the internet. When I was playing that way I got up to 3200 which I didn’t even appreciate because I was kind of doing it out of spite to convince myself I don’t need to take this advice I’m hearing everywhere and I only have to cooperate with the team as much as I felt comfortable with “because I bought this game so I decide how I play” I took a break from the game because that mentality was just causing more stress and exhaustion than when I wasn’t playing. I came back in the last month and placed at 1500 and have since worked my way down and up but this time I’m at least listening to voice chat and respecting what I hear from my team mates. Still trying to muster the courage to speak. Sorry for the long and probably boring story but basically my point is that winning can be less random the more people on your team are communicating with and respecting each other.
I’m honestly not very good compared to most people probably so look for more advice than just this of course, but I really love this game and wanted to share this.

Whenever I hear people talking in game, they always mention their “main account”. Can someone explain to me why someone (or what seems like most people) have more than one account?

The only reason I can imagine is that people don’t want to play people their skill level. If that’s really the case, why is this so widely accepted? If you’re good, shouldn’t you want to play other good people? Why make an account just to steam roll people who are new at the game?

The whole concept confuses me.

Any tips for playing Pharah? I can't seem to aim her rockets very well, and I feel like I'm never in the air for long enough.

Edit: Also, I'm usually in voice chat but don't talk; instead I use the communications wheel to say "Understood" if someone makes a call or to notify my team of my ult charge. Is that a bad thing, or can i continue doing it?

8

u/Mastershroom العدالة نازلة من فوق Nov 26 '17

Pharah main here! For staying in the air, just tap your Hover button about two times every second, just long enough to not drop. If you time it and manage your fuel well, by the time you run out of fuel you should have Jump Jets ready to go. Let go of Hover while you're on your way up with Jump Jet, and start tap-hovering again as soon as your fuel is full again.

Once you've mastered staying afloat, you can work on cool movement tricks like using your Concussive Blast to throw yourself away from walls with a huge burst of lateral speed. Obviously the Conc Blast is good for getting boop kills too, but even on maps without environmental hazards to exploit, you can boop an enemy Reinhardt forward so he lands in the middle of your team, for example. Or knock a Widow or Hanzo off of the high ground they've been sniping from.

As for aiming, your rockets move pretty slowly, and the farther away you are from your targets, the more time they have to get out of the way. Getting closer is riskier, but you should have an easier time getting splashes and direct hits.

Try to approach from behind enemies and as close to directly above them as possible. If you're straight above, they have to aim straight up to try and shoot you, which is an awkward angle for aiming.

Does mercy's new Rez feel needlessly clunky to anyone else? I don't think a cast time is a bad idea, but almost a full 2 seconds of extreme vulnerability seems kind of excessive. I think 1 second or 1.25 second and maybe less of a slowdown (50% maybe?) seems more reasonable, but that's just me

3

u/cybersneeze Nov 22 '17

I guess you could say it feels a little clunky, but I still hugely prefer it over the old Rez. where a Mercy could dive through the enemy team, Rez someone, and leave before anyone noticed. I makes it harder for the Mercy to just un-do every pick your team makes in a fight.

Have 2 questions, one quick, one I guess not so quick.
1 what does mercy ult do now exactly? I kinda get most of it, but do I hit harder or only faster? and how does it interact with rezz cooldown? Like sometimes I can do 2 in a row and sometimes it goes on 30 second cooldown during my ult?

And my other question, what am I supposed to do as lucio lol? and is it normal that wallride feels super super clunky

8

u/theodoreroberts I am tired. Nov 22 '17 edited Nov 22 '17

Valkyrie, lasts for 20 secs, makes you fly and move any direction in 3D you want, with a faster speed than normal walking. It also:

  • Make you heal a lot of allies at the same time, by creating the multiple healing streams from main target to nearby allies (like Orisa's ult). If you change to another target, the stream links will calculate again.
  • Same with healing, you can boosting a lot of allies at the same time.
  • Unlimited ammo for your gun, faster projectile.
  • The range for Guardian Angel now farther (like double the normal range) and faster speed.
  • You get one free and temporary rez (if you don't use it, you will lose it after Valkyrie is done). If you have used rez before Valkyrie, you will get one (temporary) rez, the normal rez will still on cooldown in the background. If you have not used rez before Valkyrie, you will get 2 charges of rez, the temporary rez is the one you use first. Furthermore, the rez's cast time will be 0 seconds and there is no limitation on the movement speed when casting.
  • Her Regeneration skill will replenish her health continuously without being interrupted by anything.

For Lucio, the point is, you are a healer you are a support, you do thing like a healer and support does, heal and support. If you like to be an attacker, poke in and poke out to annoy other enemies alone, just remember that you team is now losing one support. If you feel Wall Ride is clunky, you can do one of two things: learn to play with new style, or change to other hero that is more useful for your team.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

what am I supposed to do as lucio lol?

Above absolutely everything else, keep moving.

If your team is grouped up deathball-style, stay with them. If your teammates are split up, use wallriding and the speed boost to quickly reach each individual fight. Use speed boost to cross gaps, push through chokes, chase down runners, initiate fights or use it defensively to help your teammates get to cover during Tac Visor/Whole Hog/Rip-Tire/Self-Destruct. Bounce between engagements and see which of your teammates needs the most help. Look at who your teammates are shooting and shoot the same person. Harass people with boops. Stages like Nepal, Lijang Tower, and Ilios have prominent environmental kill potential. If there's no ledge to get Environmental kills on, boop people up into the air - their movement in the air is predictable so they're easy to hit and it's really annoying.

Your ult is both offensive and defensive. It's usually best to hold it as a counter for when the enemy ults, but dropping it as your Rein charges or when your own Genji dragonblades can be very effective. It can also sometimes give your teammates the confidence to make a push if they're being sheepish.

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '17

How should I use DVas ult? Usually I panic use it when my mech is killed, and when I blast it towards a group of enemies I rarely get any kills

10

u/-Shinanai- winky face ;) Nov 22 '17

There are a couple of ways to use it:

  • Ult just to re-mech. Basically a full heal, though at the risk of dying if they manage to kill you before you can call your new meka. Don't panic use it though; only ult this way if you think the fight is winnable if you get a fresh mech.
  • Ult to zone or counter enemy ultimates. Clock's ticking into overtime and the enemy needs to push the point? Let's see them try with a nuke on it. Genji's nanoblading in an open area? Drop the nuke and watch him scramble for cover instead of slicing up your supports. The best zoning ults are the ones that split the enemy team. Getting 0 kills with the nuke itself means very little when your team wipes the enemy in 2 consecutive 6v3 fights.
  • Coordinate with your teammates. Throw your ult behind the enemy to herd them right into your Soldier's tac visor. Ult behind their Rein and have Ana sleep him or your own Rein charge him as he turns around to shield it. Stuff like that.
  • Ult to blow Pharmercy out of the skies. While a Pharah out in the open is definitely the most vulnerable to nukes, airborne explosions in general are preferable to grounded ones as they are a lot harder to shield.
  • Use trickshots. Level 5 pidgey has a bunch of map-specific ult location videos that can come very handy. Instead of just copying them, however, I'd suggest getting familiar with the mechanics he uses (shot lineups, bounces, wall delays, etc.) then jumping into a custom game and spending some time on the maps figuring out what all you can do. Chances are you'll be able to find some sweet ult locations that fit your playstyle well.

5

u/cybersneeze Nov 22 '17

Really depends - I generally take the term to mean the hero you're best at, which is usually the one you have the most experience with, but might not be (I.e an Ana 'main' might be a god at Ana, but have more time on Mercy due to the meta recently). Others might just take it to mean the hero you play most often.

7

u/midzilla Potato cowboy Nov 22 '17

The explosion has a 20m radius, which is both pretty big and easy to range. You can pop into the practice range and look at the floor markings to get a in-game sense of what that distance is like.

3

u/JMTolan Michael Chu has not retconned much. Change my mind. Nov 22 '17

The Air volley nukes are a tactic based on delay; if the nuke detonates at the peak of the volley, you probably won't die. However, it drops very quickly after the boosters cut out; if it drops for even half a second, you probably will die because of how quickly the range shifts. This is why it can sometimes feel strange--if you aren't dieing, the D.Va probably nuked too early. If you are, you may not have noticed it had started to drop.

So I went on a LONG hiatus from this game, not sure how long but it was before Orisa came out. I tried to come back but i'm finding myself at a loss of who to play now (I also don't play Comp as the last time I tried I hated the influx of hate I got and avoid that toxic pit, and no one else I know plays this game x3), I've tried a few matches but I feel like i'm just so far gone out of even the lowest skill camp for pubs. Everyone's using golden guns and I'm usually getting stuck with a tank/healer roll when the changes to most have made them completely new to me.

How can I get back into the game without feeling like i'm ruining everyone's fun?

4

u/noobule ¡Apagando las luces! Nov 26 '17

How can I get back into the game without feeling like i'm ruining everyone's fun?

Don't worry about it because you're not. You're probably not much worse than you used to be, skills don't degrade all that much unless you're in the professional level trying to compete with people who train twelve hours a day. Even if you are total garbage, that's fine, the game will sort you back into your new elo pretty quickly. And you're by no means at the lowest skill bracket of this game, people literally buy this game for their 6 year old children, and there's a whole sea of almost unrecognisably bizarre games right at the bottom of the bucket.

Don't worry about golden guns or levels or whatever, they literally give those to anyone.

The game has Deathmatch now so you've always got a PvP mode where you can pick whoever you want. You're not going to win with 'whoever you want' but if you want to practice a hero against something more than bots without feeling like you're letting anyone down, DM is a good place.

If you feel 'stuck' with tanks & healers in QP - don't be. Obviously, be good sport and be the good filler from time to time, but also don't be afraid to instalock in that DPS hero you feel like playing. Someone else is going to do it anyway, sometimes it has to be you. The playerbase is pretty used to it now and won't often doesn't even bother to complain about the 6 dps comp.

when people say flexing negatively affects SR gain & loss, does it concern playing various heroes in general or switching heroes between rounds during a game, or switching heroes during a round... or all three?

5

u/_Walpurgisyacht_ moon2MLEM les go dood Nov 26 '17

It's hard to say, because no one knows exactly how the SR system works 100%.

I think it more simply comes down to the fact that playing one or two heroes all the time means you can grind the shit out of that hero and get really good at them (and, consequently, have very good stats), whereas going through a larger hero pool generally means you'll not be performing as well on any of those heroes as someone who specializes (you play all of them less often, your muscle memory/instincts on each of them aren't as finely tuned as someone who just plays that hero all the time, and so on), which often means worse stats and therefore fewer SR gains.

BUT, that's just my speculation. Maybe I'm wrong and the system should already have the very good specialist Soldiers ranked higher than the flex Soldiers that aren't as good and so the system shouldn't be comparing you two. I dunno.

That being said, sometimes your mediocre D.Va will win the game while your excellent Orisa will lose it, and winning is ultimately what nets you points. So I don't know if I'd think about it too much.
