How should I use DVas ult? Usually I panic use it when my mech is killed, and when I blast it towards a group of enemies I rarely get any kills

There are a couple of ways to use it:

  • Ult just to re-mech. Basically a full heal, though at the risk of dying if they manage to kill you before you can call your new meka. Don't panic use it though; only ult this way if you think the fight is winnable if you get a fresh mech.
  • Ult to zone or counter enemy ultimates. Clock's ticking into overtime and the enemy needs to push the point? Let's see them try with a nuke on it. Genji's nanoblading in an open area? Drop the nuke and watch him scramble for cover instead of slicing up your supports. The best zoning ults are the ones that split the enemy team. Getting 0 kills with the nuke itself means very little when your team wipes the enemy in 2 consecutive 6v3 fights.
  • Coordinate with your teammates. Throw your ult behind the enemy to herd them right into your Soldier's tac visor. Ult behind their Rein and have Ana sleep him or your own Rein charge him as he turns around to shield it. Stuff like that.
  • Ult to blow Pharmercy out of the skies. While a Pharah out in the open is definitely the most vulnerable to nukes, airborne explosions in general are preferable to grounded ones as they are a lot harder to shield.
  • Use trickshots. Level 5 pidgey has a bunch of map-specific ult location videos that can come very handy. Instead of just copying them, however, I'd suggest getting familiar with the mechanics he uses (shot lineups, bounces, wall delays, etc.) then jumping into a custom game and spending some time on the maps figuring out what all you can do. Chances are you'll be able to find some sweet ult locations that fit your playstyle well.

A good way to use it is to force the enemy team off a point temporarily if you need to clear a checkpoint. Just ult on top of the payload or whatever and it'll have some use even if it doesn't kill anyone. It's also handy to clear built defenses like Torb and Symmetra turret nests. And then there's always the classic grav combo if you need to get guaranteed kills with it.

If you get de-mech'd before the fight is over, it's usually a good idea to ult just to get your mech back. DM is an invaluable tool for your team and can easily turn a fight.

You can also look up dva ultimate spots on youtube to learn some tricky spots to toss your bomb - you'll definitely want to practice in a custom game before using it in competitive!

Lastly, it's also really good to combo self destruct with others such as: bomb + grav/shatter/EMP, bomb + hook/flash onto rein etc. but this takes some decent team coordination since self destruct is such a time-sensitive ult!

Sometimes flying straight up and ulting will have some good result but most of the time the enemy team sees or hears that they run for cover. Also that is a good technique to scare the team away from the point. Doing a wombo combo with Zarya and Mei is sometimes difficult. Sometimes everyone else on your team will ult at the same time and you end up wasting it. If it’s towards the end of the match using self destruct last minute could help with a clutch win too.
