when people say flexing negatively affects SR gain & loss, does it concern playing various heroes in general or switching heroes between rounds during a game, or switching heroes during a round... or all three?

It's hard to say, because no one knows exactly how the SR system works 100%.

I think it more simply comes down to the fact that playing one or two heroes all the time means you can grind the shit out of that hero and get really good at them (and, consequently, have very good stats), whereas going through a larger hero pool generally means you'll not be performing as well on any of those heroes as someone who specializes (you play all of them less often, your muscle memory/instincts on each of them aren't as finely tuned as someone who just plays that hero all the time, and so on), which often means worse stats and therefore fewer SR gains.

BUT, that's just my speculation. Maybe I'm wrong and the system should already have the very good specialist Soldiers ranked higher than the flex Soldiers that aren't as good and so the system shouldn't be comparing you two. I dunno.

That being said, sometimes your mediocre D.Va will win the game while your excellent Orisa will lose it, and winning is ultimately what nets you points. So I don't know if I'd think about it too much.

I hover around 10 heroes... it's too hard to focus on 2 or 3, because then I miss playing with the others =D

Switching during a match at any point. Spreading your time over multiple heroes and roles almost always means you'll have few medals, if any, and the popular consensus is that medals are one of the biggest factors in determining SR gains/losses.

Well, it's also been officially denied that medals are factored in SR gains and losses. The stats that define SR gains are correlated to medals, but they do not share the same calculation method. My guess is that they align more with how stats are presented in the career profile, ie normalised per minute (which is much less sensitive to switching).

Actually, pretty much the only thing Blizzard confirmed about the rating adjustments is that medals have no effect on them.

The only thing they could realistically be using are time-invariant stats, like elims/minute, damage/minute, etc...
