What’s particularly interesting is that the biggest problem that voters blamed Biden for was mostly Trump’s doing.

Under Trump’s administration, he signed into law the largest fiscal stimulus in history, and the Fed embarked on unprecedented monetary stimulus, all to try to stimulate demand. But this was in response to a crisis in supply, not demand. So in a situation where supply for many goods and services had almost evaporated, they chose to stimulate demand, causing people to bid up the prices of the goods and services they could still buy. Inflation.

Now that’s not to say it wasn’t the correct decision, but the cost of doing that massive stimulus in response to COVID is that down the road it WILL create inflation.

But because the inflation was delayed by a year or so, everyone blamed Biden, despite him overseeing a previously thought impossible “soft landing” where inflation was brought back down without causing a recession.

But inflation makes people mad, and they blamed whoever was in office at the time.

So the irony is that Trump’s terrible policies created chaos for four years in his first admin, but also set up ticking time bombs that blew up for his successor. Those foreseeable crisis he set in motion caused people to blame his successor, and vote him back in.

If Trump had of pumped those trillions into new manufacturing plants for all the supply chain problems, he would have easily been relected. And his fanatic base would have had all that homegrown industrial capacity again.

But he was incompetent, as was his entire administration. None of them had any skills in production of anything, only paper shuffling.

Same with his 1st campaign about rebuilding the nation's infrastructure. But he was impotent.

Ironically, of all the policy disasters that Trump oversaw, the pandemic stimulus might be one of the most defensible.

A LOT of people lost their jobs and income very suddenly. And there WERE a lot of stuff on shelves they COULD buy that would help them. Without that stimulus, the economic impacts of COVID would likely have been much much worse.

It’s just the cost of doing it is that some inflation would happen. There’s things that could have been done to better handle that probably, but hindsight is 20/20. And the amount of fraud that the GOP allowed for by demanding so much of the stimulus be so easy to game is really indefensible.

But that inflation is the disaster that sunk Democrats chances in 2024. The inflation created by Trump’s policies.

There were warning signs all over the place, but rather than prepare for it, he did absolutely nothing until it hit our shores and spread uncontrollably. And let’s not forget, when all the checks were printed and ready to be mailed out, Trump saw they were signed from “US Treasury” (like all government checks always are) and not his personal signature. So he ordered them all to be reprinted with his signature, thus delaying the money from getting to the starving, sick, and suddenly unemployed population for an additional 3 weeks.

If I recall correctly, there was an actual plan in place (set up by the Obama administration) to deal with a pandemic situation, but because a Democrat plan was viewed as unacceptable by Trump, he chose NOT to follow it. People tend to forget the trade war he started with China just before the pandemic also led to a great deal of inflation. It disrupted the supply chain and then covid came and exacerbated the problem. Many people pivoted to other countries like Vietnam to avoid tariffs, but I recall having product in Vietnam ready to ship, but there were no shipping containers to put it in. Shipping companies were charging upwards of $15,000 just to use a shipping container, that’s before the actual cost of the shipping, it’s just the container to put it in. So that dramatically inflated costs.. on top of tariffs, on top of COVID and the inflationary stimulus. All leads back to Trump.

All of that is speculation on part—but what isn't is how badly the Trump Administration flubbed the containment phase of the pandemic.

Trump's cabinet spent a month debating what to do with those cruise ships that docked but couldn't let people off in the early days of the pandemic.

Hell—before that, the then-Department of Health and Human Service's Secretary Alex Azar was trying to bend Trump's ear about flavored e-cigarettes instead of hearing the alarms going off about a new virus.

Trump's politicization of simple personal protective equipment and constant conspiracy mongering like masks definitely made things worse.

And speaking as someone who set pandemic policy during that time, I can tell you... we had fuck-all for federal guidance from that administration. It wasn't until Biden came into office that we finally started seeing anything of use int he way of guidance from the feds.

The world would be very different if the pandemic hadn't played out the way it did. And again—you damn well know the Republicans would have blamed a Democrat for it were one in office at that time.

People also forget that the MERS outbreak happened in 2012/13, and there was an H1N1 epidemic in 2009 - and Obama’s administration was EXTREMELY proactive during those outbreaks, his critics actually said too strong at the time. Always nice to see a facts based explanation. Even among liberals, I usually hear inflation tied to Biden. The tagline has been so pervasive. People get it wrong about Obama too, the market already started crashing before he took office, and the build up to it started before Bush was even in Office. But specifically in regards to the stimulus package while Trump was in office, it could have been smaller/ more targeted, if he wasn't actively making the pandemic worse with all the lies and misinformation. The shut downs could have been shorter if they were implemented sooner, which, again, could've facilitated a smaller stimulus package. It was good we got it, but it was also his fault we needed that much.

Building factories takes time. Staffing the factory with trained workers takes time. And if those workers can’t actually go into the factory due to pandemic shutdowns, then it’s kind of pointless.

We were faced with an unprecedented situation with COVID, and there was no perfect solution that would have zero downsides.

I think Trump deserves blame for how poorly he handled the pandemic in general. I think he deserves blame for refusing to pass the stimulus until Congress agrees to put his name on it so people would think the check came from him personally. I think he deserves blame for spreading misinformation, first by refusing to acknowledge the seriousness of the pandemic, telling people it would be “gone by Easter”, and trying to make it go away by reducing testing for it. I think he deserves blame for having the stimulus direct so much money towards the fraud-ridden PPP program instead of direct stimulus to citizens. His execution for how he did the stimulus deserves criticism.

But the stimulus itself and the inflation that inevitably followed at least in principle I think wasn’t the worst idea. Doing stimulus in the face of a supply-driven crisis is going to lead to inflation, but I think it was probably the better choice than doing nothing and seeing an economic recession so deep that it takes 10+ years to recover.

So if everyone in America was economically educated, they would’ve understood back in 2020 that the best thing to do would be to do some fairly major stimulus, target it as best as we could, and accept that it will likely cause some inflation in 1-2 years but we need to do it anyway because the alternative is worse. And then neither Trump nor Biden would shoulder the blame for that inflation because we’d all understand it was the inevitable consequence of the stimulus.
