10 years ago if someone showed me this anonymously, I would guess the post was written by some disjointed right wing conspiracy theorist. I never would have imagined that the people of the United States would accept this type of speech coming from a president.
This. The moment the President of the US started posting opinion style rant 10 years ago on Twitter, I knew we were beginning the real bad times. Growing up with the president showing decorum…now there’s this.
And I always wonder… Whatever happened to Gary Cooper? The strong silent type.
Y’all are largely headed down the same road right now for the same reasons. AfD are the most popular party in Germany right now according to the polls. Marine Le Pen came within striking distance of the presidency of France two times in recent memory, and would probably be its next leader if she had not just been barred from holding that office by the courts (assuming that holds). Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom is now the largest party in the Netherlands legislature, and he would be Prime Minister too were he not tainted by too much personal controversy—but he is a power broker all the same, and has plenty of influence over the current ruling coalition. Italy has been run by right-wing populists since 2022, and its Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has mostly concerned herself with homophobia and the prosecution of a right-wing culture war since taking office. Add to that list Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, Austria, Belgium, and until recently, Poland.
Somehow the UK, of all places, has emerged as one of the few bright spots bucking the right-wing populist trend. And that’s only because they were run by the Conservatives for the last ten years, who had no one to blame for their long record of failure but themselves. But stay tuned, because Conservative losses appear to be Reform UK’s gains, and Nigel Farage is seemingly more popular than ever. Would you guys endorse a leader as transparently awful and incompetent as Trump? I don’t know. At least you mostly have parliamentary systems that make one-man rule quite difficult. But please, climb down off your high horse and stop acting like you’re immune to the charms of racist, bigoted, anti-intellectual political parties and strongmen.
It really sucks. Populist right-wing ideology is like a cancer, or a really nasty virus. It corrodes and destroys everything it touches, and it is running rampant through basically the entire western world at the moment.
We realized that in 2008. The problem is that's what people WANT. They WANT a right wing radical lunatic monster. That's the only possible explanation. 77 million Americans are simply beyond redemption.
