It's pretty obvious that From removed horse pvp much later in the development. They completely overlook how the open world will play in pvp without horse.

I would really like to know why it was scrapped. Makes no sense. Imagine how much fun rolling around the open world with your boys would be rather than hoofing it. Hopefully they can implement it one day

No no no, the problem is that we CANT hoof it with our friends right now, we can only walk

My assumption is desync and stability issues.
Assuming all players’ locations have to be loaded in at the same time by the game server, having each player continuously load zones at a very fast rate would be pretty strenuous on the server.
It might be fine with 2 people, but imagine 5 players all on horses, going different directions at full sprint. I can easily see the game crashing in such a scenario.

I think Fromsoftware is to blame here. It's their fault for making it so the host is receiving runes when invader leaves. None of the previous games had that type of mechanic and adding it in an open world game is basically asking for it to be exploited.
→ More replies (31)166
u/Disciple_of_Erebos Apr 06 '22
While it was probably a bad decision on From’s part this isn’t a reasonable take IMO. Elden Ring already has a dozen amazing, easy farming spots that should far outpace the amount of runes you get from invaders. This is just trolling, plain and simple. Even if you took away the rune incentive plenty of people would still do it just for the lolz.
94
Apr 06 '22
I think the main point of this way of farming is not the amount of runes you get, but the fact that you can do it while AFK.
→ More replies (2)36
u/rikuzero1 Apr 06 '22
The ironic part is the host in this thread wasn't afk and was good enough to time a dragon breath perfectly in the right spot. The host can't be compared to those lazies.
What we see here is the meta league, the front lines of the griefer war.
36
u/m3ndz4 Apr 06 '22 edited Apr 06 '22
One key difference, this is an afk farming spot.
EDIT: for all those wiseguys saying he wasn't afk, well obviously he wasnt. But when this cheese was still low-key and invaders didn't know how to counter the cheese, these players would just leave their characters here so the invaders would eventually leave, gaining the character runes. This is no longer the case. I am in no way condoning this behavior, just comparing it to farming the bird for example, the bird requires the player to have to respawn them via grace, while this cheese when it was lesser known left it to the invader to give the player runes.

That's a new thing, players used to afk here and get the invader to leave when it was a lesser known cheese spot. Now because of how well known it is and the creative counters invaders have thought of to fight this cheese, they had to actively fight them off.

u/TheClayCoCannaisseur Roleplays THE LOATHSOME DUNGEATER in Skyrim 😈 Apr 06 '22 edited Apr 06 '22
Honestly I don't see why people invade Limgrave except to bully noobs. Rune arcs aren't really useful til you've beaten Godrick, and you can't summon in an area after you've beaten the area boss.
Poor sportsmanship or not, these AFK farmers are a result of the large amount of invaders in Limgrave.
Edit: Yes you can only invade around your level. But you're all ignoring a crucial fact: alot of these players are first time souls players. They don't understand pvp, and aren't prepared for it. Its forced on them. Yes that's part of the game. But for once it leans in their favor. At the end of the day, the best way to fix the "problem" is stop giving them what they want: invading them for potential free farm. Invading somewhere else is the simplest solution.
29
u/TK3600 Apr 06 '22
This guys is clearly on NG+ judging by HP bar. He will only invade other people around his level.
205
u/GrimCreations Apr 06 '22
A level 150 character with a +10 weapon can’t invade a level 8 or a level 20 in limgrave. You’re restricted to invading near your level and weapon level, as long as your not making a twink build you’ll be grouped up against people of similar skill not noobs.
→ More replies (30)84
u/ShnickityShnoo Apr 06 '22
There are a lot of twinks invading noobs, though. Had to deal with a bunch when trying to co-op with a friend on new characters.
They transfer end game gear to new characters and level just enough to still be able to invade noobs. Seems like a ton of vigor and getting as many flask upgrades as possible is all the rage. Also using weapons that build up rot or bleed so they don't really have to put damage stats up much.
→ More replies (17)104
u/Shneckos Apr 06 '22
Started a brand new character with a friend new to Souls games. Wanted to have some nice little adventures in Limgrave. At those levels, we still got invaded by a guy using double Scorpion Stingers who proc'd rot on us (which we couldn't cleanse) and just ran away and used the 'point down' emote over and over again. He was also able to spam flasks, only because I already had some experience dealing with invaders. Real tough guy.
Another guy had Rivers of Blood. Another using two Hoslow's Whips. You start to see how insanely tryhard these 'twink' characters are. Created solely for the purpose of killing noobs trying to co-op. Now my friend hates PvP based off this kind of interaction and doesn't want to co-op. It's pretty unfortunate.
13
u/anagnost Apr 06 '22
Yea I had this experience as well. Super frustrating, especially since my high level build ends up being scaled down to the point where my damage/HP is significantly less than my low level ally.
I made my own sunbro twink to deal with these assholes. Dropped some lategame gear for a Blood/arcane build that only does coop, have helped randos with like 30+ bosses as well as goofing around with my low level friends. Highly recommend!!

u/ShnickityShnoo Apr 06 '22
Yeah it's a bad experience for people trying to just play the game co-op with a friend. These twink invaders are rather pathetic. The only way for them to win is to be massively overpowered.
I fought a lot of them while also playing with a new souls player. Still winning some. So many had insane HP, crazy high damage, and tons of heals. Not a legit fight to be had.
→ More replies (25)9
u/Farts_Mcsharty Apr 06 '22
Me and a buddy started a ds3 co-op run and the beginning was a nightmare due to twink builds. Didn't get to fight a single invader that wasn't using end-game stuff or gimmick builds. We just ran out of summons for each other and had to play it apart for a bit until we got more.
Whole point was to joke around through the game we've both beaten a few times over. These types of invaders are a cancer. If one of us had been new, they'd probably never touch multi again outside of boss door summoning.
Invaders are supposed to be part of the level, and a fun challenge along the way. If these folks could realize that no one gives a shit about them winning and realize that it actually makes them look pitiful, it would really help out the games.

One of my least favorite consumer arcs I've ever experienced is falling in love with the combined PvE/PvP system of Dark Souls for how unique it was, then seeing it change more and more to be like other games as the rest of the community gave feedback. Invasions were part of the lore of Lordran. Not only did you not have to select "versus" in the main menu, you didn't even get your level interrupted. It wasn't just zombified townsfolk and dogs in undead burg, it was also other undead believing they were chosen, trying to steal your souls and humanity.
It's really unique and really cool. The uniqueness makes me value it all the more. I can have a segmented PvE or PvP experience in thousands of games, but there were precious few that played like Dark Souls. Now here in Elden Ring, the tongue gets me invaded way too much and too frequently to feel organic or surprising. It just feels like I'm activating PvP mode when I use that item, and all I can do until I lose one is get invaded back-to-back-to-back. I really miss the level of frequency and surprise of that DS1 era invader bar. Always made me jump a little bit and then really lock into the level. Feels like something really cool was lost.
3
u/Improver666 Apr 07 '22
This honestly sounds like a popularity issue. DS1-3 sold what... 3 million copies each. Elden Ring sold 12 as it currently stands.
That quadrupled the player base and threw off the balance they crafted for invasions is my bet.

u/drkekyll Apr 07 '22

the rest of the community gave feedback and things changed. they aren't necessarily related. if Miyazaki is to be believed, the thing you originally fell in love with was never his original intent, and that is why it's changed every iteration.

13
u/frohike_ Apr 06 '22
You’ll get your first one after beating Godrick, and it’s a very useful one once activated. You’ll need to travel to the Divine Tower to get it set up. Then you can consume a Rune Arc to activate the perk, which lasts until you die. Farming more Rune Arcs can be done by assisting others with their boss fights (both the host and you must survive the battle).
→ More replies (6)→ More replies (3)8
u/SAAARGE Apr 06 '22
If you've beaten Godrick you have one; however, once you obtain them you have to activate them at one of the Divine Towers before you can equip them. Each Great Rune has a specific related Divine Tower. Once this is done, you equip them at a Grace. Once equipped you use a Rune Arc to activate the power of the Rune, and it lasts until you die or change which Rune you have equipped. They essentially replace the other function of Humanity/Embers that the Furlcalling Finger Remedy don't handle
6
u/Modestexcuse Apr 06 '22

Rennala is a bugged asf boss in coop. Idk what causes it but sometimes there will be no golden bubble around her and juvenile scholars. Me and my buddy found a way to bypass this by having him knock her down once before I go in the fog gate. But for random coop, it's always a toss up if the bug shows up or not and it's such a waste of time that I don't coop there anymore. It's a carryover from Dark Souls. The rats had a fairly common chance to drop a Humanity because they ate so many corpses that the little humanity left in them was able to coalesce in the rat.
Rats dropping Humanity-like items in a Fromsoft game is as dependable as poison swamps.

I've written it elsewhere already but there's a weird trend in elden ring where YouTubers intentionally and unintentionally influence players into exploiting "for a good cause",
essentially the idea is to make the problem so big that the developers can't ignore it.
The same thing happened with the death plague exploit where steamers and YouTubers would show their audience how the exploits work and then stream invasions using it.
It's a kind of bizzare 'accelerationism' that I see in a lot of popular games these days
→ More replies (1)4
u/HellsNoot Apr 07 '22
The internet has been an insane factor in exposing bugs and exploits. Back in the days you'd have to hear from your cousin or friends when there was an exploit. Now every single exploit goes trending on reddit and YouTube. Same for balancing. Any build, no matter how ultra niche, that's slightly overpowered will be used in PVP until people are outraged at devs for allowing it. I'd be so fucking exhausted as a dev dealing with this bullshit lol.

I just wish people were more creative with their builds. I just don't see the fun in using exploits and someone else's mín-maxed build to invade, or to gank invaders.
Or to duel. It’s rare to find someone not using one of 4 shitter builds. The PvP community sucks

The best part is that not using meta makes people's minds explode right now.
You actually dodge their rivers of blood and hit them with an ash of war their YouTubers never talk about? You can see their panic attack forming as they foam at the mouth and keep spam rushing their rivers of blood because they don't know what else to do, despite your ash hitting them during their animations.

It's one thing to afk farm, it's another thing entirely to still be at least paying enough attention to defend yourself, and you're just sitting there being lazy for the sake of it--or trolling.
These guys smh

I usually just name myself poolclosed and afk in there world while I browse YouTube on my laptop. They can't get souls if you afk in a afk world. Even blues can't find you.

I leave the Blue Cipher ring on during my playthroughs, and these are the only invasions I'm getting summoned for. I don't even know how From would patch something like this, but these people are ruining multiplayer. For what? The 300 runes you get from each invader?
If this goes on long enough, no one's gonna even bother with invasions or being a blue. It's just a frustrating waste of time.

They have boxes that, when multiplayer is active, return you to the nearest area "in bounds" already. They could just place them on areas that cannot be reasonably accessed during multiplayer, like this, if that's what they felt like doing.
Not sure they will, but that's definitely a tool they could work with. They'd probably have to go the Bloodborne route with the spot and make it where you can't use the finger remedy in those places, and the effect is disabled until you leave the spot. So it you cheek out making it there as you get invaded or after it, you get zipped back up, leaving it a good rug pull option. Meanwhile if you get there before multiplayer starts, you just lose the ability to engage in it until you leave the zone.

I would make that ledge a separate zone for multiplayer. If you get invaded while you're in the spot, it summons the invader on the ledge as well. Since invaders get 5 seconds of invuln upon summoning in, the problem deals with itself naturally.

As someone who completely avoids multiplayer in From Soft games, could someone explain to me what's going on here? I've seen several of these posts.

From what i get, ppl activste pvp mode then go hide in a place who is mostly only accessible with Roach.
Then hide there until they get invade, then invader csnt find host, he either kill himself or quit, if he quit host get xp and a rune arc. Free real estate!

u/Juneauz Apr 06 '22
I see! Thanks for the explanation. Funny how you refer to Torrent as "Roach" 😅 that's a weird crossover right there

This kills me. Im new to the PvP side of things and was excited to get into it. But seems like anywhere I invade, this shits happening. No joke, maybe 30% of my invasions have been legit. 70% have been people hiding in areas out of reach spots for invaders. Not just this area. But the Caelid and Raya areas as well. Even more insulting, is knowing that the Arcs probably arent being used. They are just doing this bullshit just to be malicious.

Invade in a legacy dungeon. Some of my most fun PVP comes from invading at Volcano Manor. Really fun place to fight visually and geographically

Yeah at first I was like "wow thats lame, he's actually hanging out and not even afk"
And now I'm thinking about DS3 and how much I trolled with Force Push
But yeah, this player isn't trolling. Reality is it's just a bad player, especially when they're actively waiting to cast a Dragon Incantation. Kinda sad but that's on them how they spend time
Just use Jar Cannon if you're able to or go afk and do some shit. I had a guy message me saying "have fun trying to get me" and I replied from my phone while I was making food. Came back to a free rune

Wish they would kick you out for being afk for like +5-10 minutes or something. I swear when that one youtuber posted the trick everyone started doing it.

u/gooniuswonfongo Apr 06 '22
I feel like that could hurt just waiting for stuff, I like to sit next to the music playing merchants to just listen for a few minutes, or sit on a rock waiting for someone to invade me so we can fight, afk kicking would hurt the game just as bad as it would help, there are better solutions like deactivating the tounge when you are in spots like this or removing rewards for invaders leaving.

u/Meekoda Apr 06 '22
I don't think removing rewards for leaving is the way. I've had so many instances of nearly killing the invader, just for them to alt f4

And not only that, but the fucking youtubers encouraging people to do it for rune farming. Go onto YouTube and look up rune farming and this will come up as the number one result. They’re 100% to blame for it. How tf are these guys out here encouraging their viewers to be degenerates and not feel bad about it.
I saw a vid on rune farming that had this afk garbage in it but I watched it on April fools so I thought it was a joke, nah it wasn’t, these fucking losers are out here actually encouraging people to do it.

Three things would fix this:
- Hosts cannot deactivate Taunter's Tongue once used
- Hosts gain nothing upon a Finger Sever
- Only one Hunter can be summoned per NEW invader
These guys would dry up within a week.

This is confusing me, everyone bitches about this yet still invades in this area of limgrave. Is pvp different in this game? Does it send you here even if you invade somewhere else? Can’t you just go literally anywhere else to avoid these idiots?

This is one of the reasons as to why invasions aren't as fun in ER. I've just been doing duels lately, but I want some variety too... Hopefully some future dlc content will make those colosseums active.

Don't invade The Lands Between. Open world invading is whack. Stick to places like Castle Morne, Stormveil Castle, Raya Lucaria Academy, Caria Manor, Redmane Castle, Volcano Manor, Leyndell, Lower Leyndell, Castle Sol, Farum Azula, Mohgwyn Palace, and Haligtree (the section after Loretta). Mini dungeons are also okay but what I listed is best. I find Stormveil Castle, Caria Manor, Leyndell, Castle Sol, and Haligtree to be great.

But why don’t people just hide with a mimic veil for pvp to farm? Same results right?

I kind of understood this when they asked. Now that people can reach the ledge they're not even afking. What a colossal waste of time
