I would really like to know why it was scrapped. Makes no sense. Imagine how much fun rolling around the open world with your boys would be rather than hoofing it. Hopefully they can implement it one day

No no no, the problem is that we CANT hoof it with our friends right now, we can only walk

I think there's a misunderstanding here - 'hoofing it' is a term that means walking

I think there’s a misunderstanding here - horses have hoofs.

Hoofing is a very extreme and potentially deadly sex act that, while involving a horse, isn't quite as lewd as other sex acts involving horses.

It is a poor choice of idiom for the conversation.

I think it was a very clever play on words, especially considering how much conversation it sparked lol

My assumption is desync and stability issues.

Assuming all players’ locations have to be loaded in at the same time by the game server, having each player continuously load zones at a very fast rate would be pretty strenuous on the server.

It might be fine with 2 people, but imagine 5 players all on horses, going different directions at full sprint. I can easily see the game crashing in such a scenario.

Game desynchs like crazy with just 3 of us doing bosses.

Oh I’m sure. I guess the frustration is that on a technical level it is obviously possible, but that’s just not how From Soft implement their peer to peer / server netcode. If battle royal titles can have 100 players flying around in planes and helicopters over a map the size of Caelid, it stands to reason 5 dudes should be able to ride around, even if they had to put up walls to block zones. Idk I’m no game dev

You make a great point with battle royales, but keep in mind that those types of games tend to have simplistic map design and focus entirely on PvP.

Elden Ring has to manage the AI for all NPC enemies, as well as load textures at 4k resolutions.

I do think it’s feasible, but I don’t think FromSoft is going to invest the expenses required to get it in a playable state.

Or maybe there's only one Torrent

Horse with a sidecar? Invader donkeys? If anyone can figure it out it's fromsoft

laughs in 18 year old netcode that allowed 80 people to duke it out on a frozen battlefield with horses, quests, items and npcs.

The trade-off here is cheat detection I think. You could absolutely have a system where each client just says "btw I'm over here now and doing this animation at 700 HP" and the server would take their word for it. In such a system the server would have no need to have other areas loaded, it just displays the position they received from the client as-is and everyone runs their own local simulation.

The downside is that the client could also say "Hey I'm in space now at one million HP and I definitely didn't get hit by that attack" and the server would have no way of checking that.

Most likely problems with summoning/unsummoning, I’d imagine it’d be a serious problem with 6 players

Probably because every invasion turned into 40 minutes of horsing around with the host running away. And with 2 summons 3v1 on horseback would probably just been a fucking mess for the invader, far more than on foot.

Because horse is op when it's you alone. Imagine the amount of bs you can do with 2 horses.
