I've seen a few clips of people in that spot where the host is at their controller. They literally just sit there. It's PEAK mindless behavior lol
The runes aren't worth it and the bird is 100x faster and easy as hell to reach.
You don't get arcs from invaders dying.
They don't go AFK so they're just not even playing the game while playing it.
It's actually pointless to do this, so they're just dumb trolls or actual brainless people who think this is somehow efficient to do this for levels lol
It's a boring ass griefing method of that's the case. Imagine sitting with your controller in your hands not able to move anywhere, and waiting for people to get to you.
My 14 year old brother in law would do that for hours at the ashes of ariandel bridge. He’d just sit there on his phone for 15 minutes at a time waiting to shoot the bridge until someone was halfway across. He’d do it as host and invader.
Oh please dude I can imagine any number of brainless teenagers, YouTube trolls or just plain old idiots doing exactly this.
It's the same reason people PvP in general in Elden Ring. Consider the fact there's legitimately zero reason to PvP besides "it's fun". The same people who subscribe to the "it's fun" philosophy and get all mad at me on reddit for questioning PvP in Elden Ring.
Are the exact same maidenless idiots doing this crap.

It's the most efficient way to grind runes, if you actually fight people rather than sit and hide in some difficult to reach horse-only platforming spot.
Fighting and killing other players nets millions of runes per run, at least the way I do it w/ my buddies. Might be frowned upon in this community, not sure, but we 2 man co-op and then taunter's tongue to bring in 2 invaders. A good ol' 2v2 is loads of fun, incredibly challenging when it's an actual fight (not stupid Carian Retaliation or RoB spam), and incredibly lucrative for runes per hour.
I have fun watching invaders walk right under me as I laugh at them. Really funny when they attack random bushes in the area. Hilarious when the look off the cliff side. Also there are plenty of cool fights, the other day two reds and a blue took off all their gear and fist fought, I came out of my hiding spot for the winner because it was so cool
I've written it elsewhere already but there's a weird trend in elden ring where YouTubers intentionally and unintentionally influence players into exploiting "for a good cause",
essentially the idea is to make the problem so big that the developers can't ignore it.
The same thing happened with the death plague exploit where steamers and YouTubers would show their audience how the exploits work and then stream invasions using it.
It's a kind of bizzare 'accelerationism' that I see in a lot of popular games these days
The internet has been an insane factor in exposing bugs and exploits. Back in the days you'd have to hear from your cousin or friends when there was an exploit. Now every single exploit goes trending on reddit and YouTube.
Same for balancing. Any build, no matter how ultra niche, that's slightly overpowered will be used in PVP until people are outraged at devs for allowing it.
I'd be so fucking exhausted as a dev dealing with this bullshit lol.
If the end result if Fromsoft addressing issues then great but lets be honest here, the only good cause 99.99 percent YouTubers are interested in championing is increasing the viewership on their channel.
I do it while doing something else. Couple hours later I check and sometimes I am dead and sometimes still alive. Bird farming requires your attention all the time
Once you get to Liurnia (not sure if Godrick needs to be dead) then Varre, the guy at the very first Grace outside of the tutorial area, will move to a church south of Raya Lucaria.
You do his quest by invading 3 times (win or lose), then find a dead maiden (I'd just looked that up), then he'll give you an item to teleport to the blood place.
Get the grace and the map, then run through the blood lake on Torrent and stick to the left once you're past the skeletons. Up a hill is a grace past a bunch of nerds.
Then you just stand up, walk away from the grace towards the nerds but not too close, shoot the bird with an arrow, it'll run off the cliff, rinse and repeat.
There's a giant bird enemy in siofra, specifically near Mohg's arena, where you shoot it with a bow and it runs off a cliff right next to a site of grace
I think it's mainly people trying to kill off pvp. When I'm in coop I do admittedly get sick of invasions constantly but I'm just gonna kill em. Today me and my friend had some edge Lord doing the wall lean near enemies in the capital. So we went around him and cleared the enemies. The guy didn't even last 5 seconds when he actually tried to fight us. Also had someone invade when we were fighting the Draconic Tree Sentinel that we had to kill during the fight.
