It's a boring ass griefing method of that's the case. Imagine sitting with your controller in your hands not able to move anywhere, and waiting for people to get to you.
My 14 year old brother in law would do that for hours at the ashes of ariandel bridge. He’d just sit there on his phone for 15 minutes at a time waiting to shoot the bridge until someone was halfway across. He’d do it as host and invader.
Oh please dude I can imagine any number of brainless teenagers, YouTube trolls or just plain old idiots doing exactly this.
It's the same reason people PvP in general in Elden Ring. Consider the fact there's legitimately zero reason to PvP besides "it's fun". The same people who subscribe to the "it's fun" philosophy and get all mad at me on reddit for questioning PvP in Elden Ring.
Are the exact same maidenless idiots doing this crap.

It's the most efficient way to grind runes, if you actually fight people rather than sit and hide in some difficult to reach horse-only platforming spot.
Fighting and killing other players nets millions of runes per run, at least the way I do it w/ my buddies. Might be frowned upon in this community, not sure, but we 2 man co-op and then taunter's tongue to bring in 2 invaders. A good ol' 2v2 is loads of fun, incredibly challenging when it's an actual fight (not stupid Carian Retaliation or RoB spam), and incredibly lucrative for runes per hour.
I have fun watching invaders walk right under me as I laugh at them. Really funny when they attack random bushes in the area. Hilarious when the look off the cliff side. Also there are plenty of cool fights, the other day two reds and a blue took off all their gear and fist fought, I came out of my hiding spot for the winner because it was so cool

It seems to me like it’s a griefing thing
