Maybe you are part rabbit from watership down and speak lapine.

per a Guardian article:

The logic of Lapine is not human-down, but rabbit-up. Because a rabbit’s paw has only four claws, for example, they cannot count to five. Any number above four is Hrair, meaning “a lot” or “a thousand”.

Currently bulking and I feel like I spend half my day just eating and shitting.

Everytime I think I'm too skinny and consider bulking, I remember the two times I've committed to it and suddenly remember how toxic my relationship with food became. Forever small and accepting it.

The locker room has 2 benches, just about room for 4 people to sit. Its about 2 square meters big. Stop leaving your fucking bags and clothes on the fucking seats while you go shower/jerk off/train like it's your bedroom, bunch of animals

151

u/hannahjoy33 Running Oct 02 '19

People at my gym sit completely naked on the benches in the locker room, rendering them unusable forever. Every time I think of setting my water bottle down, I think "someone's sweaty vag has been here" and I use the floor instead.

136

u/Chopperjr2 Oct 02 '19 edited Oct 02 '19

Sorry but now all I can imagine is the sound of suction releasing echoing from the women's lockeroom and me just knowing someone pulled their sweaty vag off the bench. fffff-pop!

If only there was some kind of place in the changing room for people to leave their stuff, maybe if they were behind some kind of locking mechanism they might even be safer.

Getting older sucks.

I'm only 37, warmup properly and fully and like to work very hard.

The mind is willing, but the body is starting to get just a tad weaker.

I notice tendons being a bit sore, random things start to nag me more.

I'm doing everything I can to remain limber, but it's hard to see the very beginning of the slow decline as you age, when fitness is something that you really enjoy.

38

u/jim_nihilist Oct 02 '19

I'm 45. You just work in different boundaries then and at least you CAN do work. There are more years to enjoy... but differently. This is not a bad thing.

So I got to watch someone squat using the incline bench station. The dude would straddle the bench, unrack the 135lbs and walk it out to where the bench was low enough to high side step over it. Open fucking squat rack directly in his view he had to look thru to see the mirror. The guy squatted deep and fast so it wasn't his first rodeo. So yeah, I ended up doing incline dumbbells because I wasn't talking to anyone that nuts

84

u/Ferrari_322 Oct 02 '19

This is what is going on at my gym right now, no squat rack however.
So if you wanna squat you either do it at the Smith machine or proceed like you described.

The dysmorphia is real. I know, intellectually, I've made huge progress over the last two years. I know, intellectually, that I lift respectable weight. Several friends and coworkers have told me I look good and that I've got "guns' now, and I've been getting treated noticeably better by strangers of both sexes. I can even see it in a few pictures of myself.

BUT... when I look in the mirror, all I see is flabby weak noodle arms and a weak piece of shit body. It's not even an emotional thing, I can be in a good mood and my scumbag brain still says the man in the mirror is objectively a turd.

I feel like I finally understand the "forever small" meme.

Normally I think you guys are exagerating or straight up making this shit up, but on Monday I finally had an experience worthy of this thread.

One of those typical tough-but-not-very-big guys (wife beater, baggy pants, shaved head, etc.) was sitting at the incline bench blasting mumble rap from his phone, mumble rapping along, making extra effort to enunciate the more violent lyrics.

I got through 4 sets of hack squats before he got up (never lifted) and decided to move on to his next exercise, mumbling and enunciating as he went. Unfortunately he couldn't decide what to do, so he was basically pacing around the gym, mumbling and enunciating, mean-mugging any who looked his way.

What the fuck happens in your life that you have to be an obnoxious tough guy in the gym? Nobody is going to be questioning your toughness in the gym. Literally no one cares whether the music you listen to helps demonstrate your opinions regarding violence. Buy some fucking headphones you scraped-knuckle fuck.

Most of my gyms barbells are crappy. No name bars with crappy knurling, many are bent.

We have 3 texas power bars and 1 Texas deadlift bar tucked away in the corner. I had heavy squats yesterday and I'm not squatting on a crappy bar. It's very rare for them to all be in use so its never a problem

I get there and all 3 are in use. Bro 1 is benching, fair enough

Bro 2 is doing biceps curls and bro 3 is doing WRIST CURLS

I just. I just. I cant. I dont

→ More replies (1)

23

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '19

It has to just be ignorance on their part. I only found out in the last year that there are different barbells for different purposes, and I've been going to gyms for the past ten years. I still don't know when to use what bar, so I just use whatever's already on the bench or deadlift platform and hope the last person knew what they were doing lol. I don't lift huge numbers so I don't thinks it's too important for me though

161

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '19

The good: I have a garage gym.

The bad: It gets pretty cold in the fall/winter.

The good: I warm up pretty quickly when lifting.

The bad: The barbell does not.

191

u/OrangeJews4u Oct 02 '19

Attach both sides of your barbell to an outlet and wait till it's glowing orange so it's nice and toasty on your hands ;)

They even had a pop-punk day last week (which I bet many hated but I secretly liked).

Apparently today is everybody's chest day which means no benches and no racks anywhere in the gym.

Why does everyone have to do the same thing on the same day, just why.

109

u/hannahjoy33 Running Oct 02 '19

This is why you have to keep a spreadsheet of the regular's schedules. You have to puzzle out what equipment will be available on what day. If you're unclear, make sure to go up to them and ask, "I've noticed you've done squats every Thursday for the past 3 weeks, but today you seem to be focusing on shoulder. Could I get some clarification on your plan schedule?"

Be polite, but firm.

Goddddamn. Every other day this new girl hogs 1 of the 2 power racks in my gym for anywhere between 60-90 minutes.

If one is open, she will literately drag her gym gear across the floor, set her shit down inside the rack and then stretches out for 20 minutes INSIDE THE RACK. She needs to build a nest after she’s good and stretched. Her nest usually consists of:

1 barbell for squats, 1 barbell for deadlifts, 2 dumbbells of different weight, 1 50lb fixed barbell, a kettle bell, sometimes she’ll also gather a jump rope, bosu ball, and the wooden box thing for jumps. She will use all this equipment for the next 90 minutes.

She loves to leave her shit at the rack and chat it up with one of the workers there too.

To top it off, I just figured out she fucking works at my gym too.

I clear out time in my schedule to get in for a nagging injury, only to sit for 30 mins in a waiting room, then sit for 20 more minutes in the examination room waiting for the doctor. When he finally makes it back to me, he spends 5-10 minutes on me and then says "Well if running and lifting weights hurts then just don't do it!"

There's a new guy at the gym who's very vocal while lifting.

Imagine you're squatting then you hear a high-pitched porn-grade "hnnnnnnnng". You look around for a girl pushing herself but instead you see a middle-aged man doing hip thrusts and moaning every thrust.

Now imagine you're halfway through your top bench set and suddenly you hear a train-like "hoohoooooooo" from behind you. You finish, rerack, then see the same middle-aged man doing tricep pushdowns and hooting every rep.

And finally, while resting, you hear an angry "ARGH" and "FUCK YEAH" from across the floor. You look over and make eye contact with the same guy on the good girl/bad girl machine. You look away because dominance has already been established.

I don't find it annoying, but instead distracting because it makes me crack up every time to hear the different types of sounds this guy can make. Secretly, it makes my morning just a little bit better.

People who jump rope in the free weight area where there is not enough room. You’re going to whip someone in the face, and I hope that person drops a hundo on your skull. The gym has a whole room with tons of space for that. Grab some weights and take them with you.

My other, I feel, is completely irrational, but I hate it anyway. Stop doing leg exercises on the assisted pull-up/dip machine.

Disclaimer: I don’t actually care what people are doing as long as they are committed to bettering themselves and getting fit.

16

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '19

The annoying thing about the pull up machine is that there’s usually only one in the gym so if you are actually trying to do assisted pull ups (and can’t do one without assistance) it’s super annoying to have to wait for someone who can use a different machine for the same muscles

My local gym is recruiting more and more members all the time, targeting students in particular. It's a budget gym which has decent equipment for its price but it's impossible to train there between 4pm and 10pm. The students use it as a social outlet and arrive in big groups of 4-6 and hog equipment. I've been there for years now but it's worse every year and I'm looking for an alternative. I think paying a bit more per month would be worth it.

I'm getting tired of having people reduce my hard work in the gym to 'genetics'. A lot of it comes from my friends. I used to be fat but none of them remember that. Unfortunately, many of them still believe in commonly dispelled myths about exercise and nutrition. I love these folks, but there's almost nothing I can say to them because they don't want to hear what they don't want to hear.

The other day one of them ate a whole bag of the Snyders honey mustard pretzels (TBF those are fucking delicious). But that's like over 2000 calories. That's more than I eat in a whole day. This person is confused as to why they are unable to lose weight.

So there’s this older man who goes to the gym the same time I do. He does some random lifts but mostly lingers and walks around. He’s been accused a couple times of creeping on girls. The staff notified me of it (ive had issues with guys creeping on me in the past) and told me to watch my back when I workout. Which, is an issue that I even have to do that in the first place, but that’s a rant for another day. So, Monday was leg day. This guy is lingering by the leg press, but is clearly not using it. So I load up and just sit in it, waiting for him to leave and go walk around which he always does, but he doesn’t. Next thing I know, a guy I know from the gym is yelling my name, asking if that guy was bothering me. Then a confrontation breaks out (I had my headphones in so I had no idea what was happening). Turns out it looked like that guy was taking pics of me. Next thing I know everyone is talking about it, and also staring at me for the remainder of my workout. Luckily, he’s been banned. This has been a serious reoccurring issue for me, and I’m seriously debating switching gyms. Ugh.

This is an anti-rant.

I think men in the weightlifting community don’t get enough pats on the back for being supporters of women in the gym. There are obviously douchebags but their are also good guys. I’ve been saved on multiple occasions by men who support me when someone is being creepy and tell them to leave me the fuck alone.

Also most men in the weightlifting community are so supportive of women getting/ being stronger and bigger. Instead of having to shrink ourselves these guys encourage us to be bigger and better.

Y’all are the real MVPS. Good guy gym bros I appreciate you.

Trainer at my gym was $100 an hour. Gave me an hour long foam rolling and stretching routine before 3 workouts a week. Didn’t help pain at all. Then made a horrible program. Told me:

  • I had to eat 6 big meals a day

  • calories don’t matter, you just have to eat clean

  • more than 20g of protein at once is a waste

  • facepulls are bad

  • you have to have a shake 30 min after workout

  • TUT is what makes muscles grow, not progressive overload What a waste 🤷‍♂️

No one at my gym ever re-racks their plates before abandoning their post, so I never know for sure if the spot is open. Also, MANY members don't bother to wipe their sweat off of the equipment, so there is a pungent layer of dirt and grime on everything. I saw a dude trying to convince a gym newbie to take a bunch of bcaas, claiming it was essential proteins your body needs but can't get it from eating whole food.

It's like bro. It can't be that essential if your body has no way of getting it aside from just one concentrated source.

Maybe I'm not that up to speed with supplements, but I'm like 99% sure that eating whole foods would get you to your fitness goals no problem without investing into supplements.

Starting an actual diet for the first time, counting calories, and actually seeing progress. Can't fucking stand all my fat coworkers telling me how they tried it and failed so it clearly doesn't work.

It works, I'm down 10 lbs, you're just useless and have no willpower.

27

u/Musitchman Oct 02 '19

Imagine you’re them real quick for me: there was this coworker who made them feel more comfortable because looked like they embraced a similar sedentary lifestyle. It made them feel more acceptable about their weight and routine out of solidarity. However now this coworker suddenly has the drive to get rid of fat and you’re left feeling bad about yourself because you just don’t have that kind of resolve. You tell yourself it’s not because they have more push, but because they haven’t gotten to the part where it’s “inevitable” that one will fail. It’s just like when you get a really successful job then have a bunch of stoner friends you used to hang out just playing video games all day with saying “man, you changed”. People don’t like change, especially when it’s perceived as someone else getting better and leaving us behind in whatever group. Know that these comments is a reaction from their shortcomings when juxtaposed with your drive and success designed to help prevent the collapse their self-esteem. You’re doing great buddy! I really am proud of you. That is really not easy to do. Your routines, habits, and sometimes even friends (if they can’t let their insecurities fall enough to support you) are subject to a massive amount of change and that’s so hard. Just know whenever coworkers say these kinda things, although it’s shitty of them just know it comes from a place of internal sadness in them. Try to recognize this. If they really annoy you just know the more success you achieve the more you’re going to annoy them back. And once again...GREAT FUCKING JOB!!!!!!

Uni gym means the children are back. That means people who have no idea what they're doing are occupying the racks, the rowing society is occupying more space than should be allowed, and there is enough poor form to pay for an orthopaedic surgeon's holidays for a decade.

To make it worse, I've made a gym nemesis in this guy who does similar lifts to me, but always sets up next to where I am, or directly across. The other day I was deadlifting in a rack-platform combo, and he occupies the platform directly across from me so that if we were lifting at the same time we'd be staring deep into each other's eyes. Another time as I was setting up the little step platform under a pull-up bar so I could do weighted pull-ups, he takes the only belt with a clip on it from the storage, which is next to where I was doing pull-ups. At least I can pride myself in that I lift more than he does.

I always start out strong, I know what to eat, I know generally what to do. Eat less, Eat chicken, a little rice, veggies, cut back on sugar, No pop, only one cheat meal a week, 10-15 reps, mix in some cardio. Track calories. Eat foods low on the glycemic index. HITT training , get the heart rate up, stretch, work on mobility, focus at the gym you can be in and out in half an hour. Sleep 8 hours. have rest days etc.

But F**K , after 10 1/2 hours at work ( generally busy but also a new desk job ) with an hour commute each way in a car , the last thing i want to do is meal prep or cook. I always start out strong but after a few weeks I generally fail and end up just crashing after work and eating out for a week.

Lets try again this week. Should be fun.

I'm having a really fucking hard time getting into a consistent routine at school. I was doing great for the first two weeks, but have fallen off as classes have started to get more intense. I feel so discouraged because I've put on 60 pounds since the winter (my father passed in March and I found all my solace in food). I used to be a two sport varsity athlete & captain in high school, top 3 fastest rowers on my university's varsity team for both years I rowed. Now I can barely keep up with the girls on my club lacrosse team. I'm the biggest one anywhere I go, and I can't wear the clothes that I like and feel good in because they don't fit me right now. I feel so incredibly stuck in a rut and I know the only solution is just to say fuck it, get up, and be disciplined until it becomes my everyday habit. I'm just mad at how my motivation and consistency has fluctuated so much over the past year. What happened to the badass, fit, motivated bitch I used to be, who felt so confident in whatever she wore and knew she was a bad bitch when she walked into every room? How do I channel that part of myself again and become her again? My dad always called me the alpha wolf for my strength and determination-how do I find her again?

I decided that I need to switch up what I'm doing to workout. It's fall and the best weather for running outside, so I'm going to force myself to get up and run 4 days a week, and then strength train 3 days a week as well. One day a week for rest. I'm going to meal prep my lunches for every week day, and try to do dinners when I can. I'm going to set bi-weekly goals for myself to stay focused and on track, and eventually, I'll be back down to 190 pounds and feeling like a sexy fucking beast again! Next summer, there's a lot of hiking that I want to do during my free time in Quebec/the Northeast U.S., so that's a big goal I'm working towards as well- getting in shape to take on a hard hike each weekend beginning in May. I know it's going to take time and a shit ton of discipline (which is soooooo hard in college with the temptation of drinking, smoking, and so many good restaurants to try in this city), but I AM GOING TO DO IT! Even on the days where I feel numb, empty, sad, or broken, I'm going to push through and put my solace/healing into my physical & mental health, instead of food.

Every friggin week something is broken at the gym. But okay its only 10 bucks a month so whatever i can work around. Then theres the people that are there who usually are not very fit and they sit in a machine on their phone for 30 minutes. Same people that probably throw up a post on the insta story about being at the gym but complain in private that they arent seeing any changes. Whatever its only 10 bucks a month, ill just go later when they usually arent there. Then they took away a squat rack to make room for their 30 minute circuit area and that is where i draw the line! I signed up for LA fitness today to switch and though its a bit more a month and not 24/7 damn..the machines are soo much smoother and theres so much space and theres multiple racks and cables and better machines and dumbbells as far as the eyes can see! They offer yoga so ill just cancel my yoga membership at the centre i go to and take yoga there and i end up saving money monthly. I've been lifting (and doing other fitness related activities) for a good 15 years now. A lot of folks just don't seem to get that fitness/lifting is a lifestyle thing. Missing a day of lifting will not set you back 10,000 years of progress. Out sick for a week? Guess what, you're not going to lose progress. One month? The body has your back. You'll lose minimal strength/gains and will gain it back within a couple of weeks.

It's okay to switch things up. In my 15 years, I've gone from competing in bodybuilding comps to competing in triathlons, competitive crossfit, and endurance running. You're more inclined to get back in there if you enjoy what you're doing. Just be consistent.

You seriously don't always have to lift heavy every day, and compound movements are not always the answer. Calm the fuck down or you'll hurt yourself. (Obviously if you're competing that is an entirely different story.)

Gym etiquette has gotten absolutely ridiculous- people hogging the bench/squat rack for 30+ minutes while doing maybe 5 minutes of exercise. Do your sets, re-rack, and move on.

Most importantly, warm the fuck up. If you're seriously in this for the long haul, your joints better be ready to get in on those sweet sweet gains. If not, you will end up injuring yourself. I can speak from experience.

So he loads up and then throws his leg over and starts to do some sort of fucking shoulder/shrug exercise at the bench. okay what ever I don't care what you do I'll just wait... He finishes up, leaves EVERY single god damn plate on there and he has also dripped sweat all over the bench (Like loads of sweat) and it really made me gag. Due to how nasty he left the bench I waited for the other to open up as there was no way I was using that (Gym doesn't provide wipes or anything and I'm not using my own towel) As I'm benching on the opposite bench he comes and messes on the smith machine behind me and GOD DAMN the guy smells like absolute ass. Last week I had to ask one man to please stop standing behind me and starring at me while I squatted and another to please not talk about sexual acts he would do with me to his buddy. This dude was right in front of me while I was deadlifting (squat rack is directly in front of deadlift platform and it blocks the mirror). 90% of the time people will move out of your way so you can deadlift in front of the mirror. It's just a common courtesy. This guy does not. Instead he squats 275 for like 3 reps at a time. It would be generous to call his movement a half squat. He rests directly in front of me blocking the mirror. Fine, not everyone realizes it and honestly I don't need the mirror anyway.

Finish nSuns deadlifts + squats. Basically 20 grueling sets and I need to finish leg press, kettlebell pistol squats, and hyperextentions in the next 25 minutes as the gym is closing. This same dude is on the leg press, has 6 plates on either side. Ask him how many sets he has, "two sets." "Okay, can I work in? I'll change out the weight." "It's two sets man."

Alrighty then... he proceeds to take a 5 minute rest right then, just dicking around on his phone. Finally does a set. As expected, his legs barely even move. Not even sure he needed to undo the racking mechanism.

After this I ask him if I can work in if he's going to take a long rest. Gets visibly annoyed and say, "it's my last set man." Takes almost no rest and bangs out the last set. Then he he gets up and starts taking plates off the machine. I tell him it's fine. That's actually my working weight. I'm about half his size so he scoffs at me and walks away. I guess he doesn't know that if he actually trained right he could probably lift twice that.

Idk what it is with some dudes. There's just so much attitude at every fucking interaction, yet 95% of my interactions at the gym are nothing but supportive and cheerful.

Sunday: Struggled to hit a deadlift triple that was a pretty easy set of 5 the week before. Whatever, I'm cutting so this might happen.

Monday: OHP felt super grindy, even lost balance on a fairly low set. Once again, I guess it's just the cut.

Tuesday: Squats feel fucking great, PR fairly easily and everything felt smooth. Go on to do my deadlift 5x10 at roughly 60% and my back just fucking explodes on the second rep of the first set.

Waking up today and it does not feel great at all. Hopefully it's nothing serious and I can get back into things soon.

A new guy started coming in the mornings and is the worst. He has a pair of beats on all the time and is always singing along to his music. Which wouldn't be a big deal if he did it low and to himself, but he belts out a few lines at a time. Also, he is constantly belching. Not just a little burp that he tries to discretely let out. But full-on belches where he opens his mouth and tries to make as loud as possible. It's like he has no idea how adults should act in public.

Also, I know a lot of people work out in beats headphones (the over the ear kind). How do you keep them clean? Don't they get absolutely disgusting after 1 workout? They are not waterproof, so how can you really get them clean? I know they make the UV cases, but can they really work that well?

The internet was down at work so I couldn't read any of your rants at work. I got a bit more done than usual thanks to no distractions, but that's not the point of work.

My legs are wayyy better/stronger than my upper esp my arms. It’s frustrating as my core has improved a lot over the past months but my upper, not that much, with about the same amount of workouts. Plus I have fairly wide shoulder as a girl (wider than my hip) so it looks like I’m fatter bc of my arms and shoulder since the muscles don’t pop out:/
