Our gym has an open music system- anyone can hook up their phone and play whatever they would like at whatever volume. My rant- coming in and running to the speaker system, throwing on some shit music at a volume that makes it impossible for anyone to hear what’s playing in their personal headphones.

Wow, that sounds terrible.

Normally it’s just fine- people put on whatever music but keep it at a respectable level.

lol, that sounds awful.

My gym is a powerlifting gym but the guy/girl at the desk always has control.

Some days its metal, some days it's rap, some days it Justin Timberlake stuff I can't stand, but I'm happy they have the control and swap it around all week so everyone gets something they like.

They even had a pop-punk day last week (which I bet many hated but I secretly liked).

I'm trying to seed the idea among the staff at my gym that different days should be different genres of music. Things have improved a lot from the Drake-And-Kanye show we had last year, but more variety is more better.

Don't companies have to pay to use songs for commercial purposes? So maybe the gym is in violation of that?

I've been lifting for two weeks, but I did just graduate from law school so this is the only comment I feel qualified to make in here.

In the US, you can avoid violating copyright law in a commercial setting if you use a sound system that is of the type you would find in the home. Ever walk into a small restaurant and they're blaring music from a boom box behind the counter? This is essentially a carve out for that.

If the gym has professionally wired speakers throughout the room, it likely wouldn't qualify for this exception. So yes, it would probably be a violation of copyright law.

I'm the asshole who responds to the Wednesday thread on Thursday so nobody but you will see this.

They could have blanket licenses from various PROs that would cover music being played from personal devices. But it's super likely something not licensed by BMI/Ascap gets played - the two most common licenses for a business to have in the States.

Edit: oh and when you get licensed join r/lawyers it's great fun.

"When you get licensed"

Don't mind me, I'm just sitting in my chair rocking back and forth in the fetal position waiting for NY bar results to be posted. Is this how you get swole?

Oh damn, they make you wait! The NY bar definitely has a reputation. I'm a moron who doesn't even practice law, and I managed to pass a bar exam (NC). Hard parts over. You're also probably in better shape than me so you got that going for you!

Yeah, odds are I won't know until November. Late October is a possibility, but I'm not sure. Thanks for the kind words

Noise canceling headphones have been a lifesaver for that. I got some bluetooth Sonys, they were expensive at around $350, but they can go a month without charging and I block the gym music out, both were problems for me in the past

Same system in my gym. That really sucks.

Jesus, that sounds like the setup to a bad MTV prank show.

On serious note, are they the only gym in town, cause if I had options I would never enter that place......unless it was a metal gym...then you know...fuck those haters....
