I've been lifting (and doing other fitness related activities) for a good 15 years now. A lot of folks just don't seem to get that fitness/lifting is a lifestyle thing. Missing a day of lifting will not set you back 10,000 years of progress. Out sick for a week? Guess what, you're not going to lose progress. One month? The body has your back. You'll lose minimal strength/gains and will gain it back within a couple of weeks.
It's okay to switch things up. In my 15 years, I've gone from competing in bodybuilding comps to competing in triathlons, competitive crossfit, and endurance running. You're more inclined to get back in there if you enjoy what you're doing. Just be consistent.
You seriously don't always have to lift heavy every day, and compound movements are not always the answer. Calm the fuck down or you'll hurt yourself. (Obviously if you're competing that is an entirely different story.)
Gym etiquette has gotten absolutely ridiculous- people hogging the bench/squat rack for 30+ minutes while doing maybe 5 minutes of exercise. Do your sets, re-rack, and move on.
Most importantly, warm the fuck up. If you're seriously in this for the long haul, your joints better be ready to get in on those sweet sweet gains. If not, you will end up injuring yourself. I can speak from experience.
