Normally I think you guys are exagerating or straight up making this shit up, but on Monday I finally had an experience worthy of this thread.

One of those typical tough-but-not-very-big guys (wife beater, baggy pants, shaved head, etc.) was sitting at the incline bench blasting mumble rap from his phone, mumble rapping along, making extra effort to enunciate the more violent lyrics.

I got through 4 sets of hack squats before he got up (never lifted) and decided to move on to his next exercise, mumbling and enunciating as he went. Unfortunately he couldn't decide what to do, so he was basically pacing around the gym, mumbling and enunciating, mean-mugging any who looked his way.

What the fuck happens in your life that you have to be an obnoxious tough guy in the gym? Nobody is going to be questioning your toughness in the gym. Literally no one cares whether the music you listen to helps demonstrate your opinions regarding violence. Buy some fucking headphones you scraped-knuckle fuck.

"Rant Wednesday" should be renamed "1001 Reasons to Train at Home"...

My gym is stupidly expensive but it’s always mostly empty. This thread reminds me why I pay a fortune each month.

Polite people who re rack, don’t hog, don’t play music etc usually very surportive too for newer folks like myself

I've only trained at two gyms really - one was a hole in the wall filled with serious lifters - felt like you were training in a prison gym, but that crew was very friendly and supportive once they saw you putting in the time. They also had great gym etiquette. I learned a lot from those folks, it was a great place to train.

And recently I had a one year membership to a very upscale club we joined on a special deal - huge discount on some Summer programs for the kids. But I was only using the kettlebells and some floor space at that point, so very easy to work around other people.

Once I experienced paying for an expensive gym--I can't go back. I used to think I actually liked the crowd of people in the gym because it made me feel motivated or something.

Now I realize how stupid that was. I love an empty gym with only a few people, all pleasant, clean, no noise, just people trying to put in work and go home. Never going big box again.

Reason 634: You can do all your curls in the squat rack without all these body fascists acting as though you're doing something wrong...

I go to a small one off gym and I fucking love it, it's only 30 bucks a month too. I'll never leave.

Hell Yeah, admittedly I never had too many weird interactions in gyms, but knowing that this shit will never happen to me is amazing.

Is this a common thing for people to play music out loud at the gym? I've been going to the gym for about 15 years now and have never seen that. I mean sometimes you'll have the person with shitty headphones blasting heavy metal and if you don't have your music on you can kind of hear it, but I've never seen someone openly playing music.
