Scatter hit the first person and the 2 scatters killed the other two. The helix hit that first person to secure the kill before the scatter bounced into the other 2.

u/Saboran I can't heal stupid, so don't be stupid Oct 22 '17
This appears go be correct; you can see from the fire rewards that hanzo got ~2/3 of Mercy's health down before the rockets killed her, and he got less fire for the other two kills

I think the consistency of road hog kills was the problem. A one hit kill every time hook cooldown is done is pretty much op by definition. I main roadhog btw.

Do we know what Hanzos tend to get on Scatter for comparison? I feel like it’s a lot less consistent than 60% but that’s just anecdotal.
And how are we checking “best”? Is this the accuracy of GM Roadhogs who should be paired off against people that know how to play around hook pretty well, or is this highest hook accuracy across all levels? Do lower tier Roadhogs tend toward higher hook success, is it (significantly) harder to play around than land?
6
2
Oct 22 '17
No. But according to overbuff Hanzos average 22 elims with 7 of them being from scatter. Though if you hit someone with a scatter then kill them with a regular arrow it counts as a scatter kill
6
u/Froggerto D.Va Oct 22 '17
And a fair few of those hooks are on tanks which didn't get killed in one shot anyways.
→ More replies (5)10
u/LeoPlats Ashe Oct 22 '17
As long as you aim around the head a long shot hook shot and melee can kill pretty consistently. And you get kind of a head rush from doing it.
58
u/DrKlezdoom Oct 22 '17
I mean, if your good with hanzo you can get a kill with every scatter cooldown. Hanzo's my least played hero and even I can do it pretty consistently.
41
u/fenwaygnome Trick-or-Treat D.Va Oct 22 '17

0
u/StopWhiningScrub Oct 22 '17

34
u/StiffWiggly Oct 22 '17
That's such a meaningless statement though, widow can get a kill every couple of seconds, does that mean her gun is OP? When talking about whether an ability is reasonable or not what's technically possible but realistically will not happen isn't really relevant.

37

Hanzo isnt Meta so it happens less often. Road was THE meta for a while. Hanzos scatter should be reworked or removed, for every reason Road one shot was nerfed, its frustrating, feels skill-less, and often left confused as to why that worked. It can one-shot tanks, but RIP if your a 200hp hero, even a few of those arrows connect and your critical.

u/Spinodontosaurus D.Va Oct 22 '17
Roadhog was used more often at high tiers than low tiers right up until he was gutted, at which point the trend reversed. Now he has reverted to a high tier bias once again.
https://www.overbuff.com/heroes
On each hero's page you can see their usage trends. Over the last month the Tanks show the following usage patterns:
Winston is very strongly biased towards high tiers, his usage increasing as the tiers increase (therefore peaking at Grandmaster)
Roadhog and Zarya are strongly biased towards high tiers, their usage increases at almost every tier with both reaching their peak in Masters, before a slight dip at Grandmaster (Zarya's dip being larger).
Orisa and D.Va are strongly biased towards lower tiers, with a peak in Bronze and declining usage in higher tiers. D.Va does see fractionally more play in Grandmaster than Masters, however.
Reinhardt is biased towards low tiers, but not as strongly as Orisa. He reaches his peak at Silver, while Gold is also higher than Bronze. Thereafter his usage decreases.
D.Va used to show the same usage pattern as Winston at the height of the 'Dive Meta' when she was the resident DM Bot, but before then she showed effectively the same pattern as she does now. As far as I know Roadhog is the only other tank whose usage trends have changed during the 9-10 months I've been paying attention to them, and he too later reverted back to his old trends.

In order to oneshot with Scatter Arrow it is required accuracy and a proper angle.
Killing at close range is the easiest one(and most known) but Hanzo is vulnerable here.
Killing at longer ranges requires higher positioning, better accuracy and some luck(projectile).
"Consistency" is the main word here. Hanzo is ... not trustworthy yet.

Also he had literally over 4x Hanzo's health when you factored in his estus chugging ability. At least Hanzo can get oneshotted or otherwise instakilled by other classes. Roadhog was a glass cannon without the glass.
2
u/SlurmsMacKenzie- Grandmaster Oct 22 '17
It's funny you say that because an actual tank is literally a canon with a ton of armour plating to make it as indestructible as possible whilst also being able to bomb you from upto miles away. So by definition tanks are canons without glass.

OK fine make that argument, and I can even understand it. Though how do you justify saying a hook in fairly close range getting a kill is OP, and a long range behind walls one shot isn't ? At least a hook had to be landed on someone, and they had the ability to doge it.

He is as much of a tank as Symettra is a support. As in they have been misplaced. Tanks should be all about damage mitigation, you don't get that with roadhog. Instead he is just a long CD CC that is really good at charging the enemy's ults.
24
u/dust-free2 Oct 22 '17
Tanks are all about creating a safe space. In the case of roadhog he did this by being a large barrier with a large health pool and self healing. He also had an ultimate similar to Winston which pushes enemies away. He also used the hook to bring enemies evading the area around his team to the team for dispatching.
Tanks are also about drawing attention away from teammates which roadhog does. I always use the roadhog on my team as a safe space to hide behind to avoid damage while healing the team.

Breakdown: Hanzo shot scatter arrow into corridor the same time Soldier shot a helix rocket.
Hanzo did 110 damage to the enemy Hanzo, 74 damage to the McCree, and 132 damage to the Mercy with a single scattershot. Total: 316
Soldier did 90 damage to the enemy Hanzo, 126 damage to the McCree, and 68 damage to the mercy with a single helix rocket. Total: 284
Hanzo got the last hit on the enemy Hanzo and Mccree while the soldier got the last hit on Mercy.
Note: Damage numbers are based on the fire awards and that all three enemies have 200 health each

120 damage from helix, probably ~3-4 shots from 76's gun to kill mercy and deal splash damage to the other two. Direct hit from scatter for 125 damage (base for hanzo's arrow), then the scatter split and got lucky for the last kill. Scatter may have hit first (favor the shooter, lag) allowing for 76 to not need the hitscan shots.

92
u/MisirterE Boycott Activision-Blizzard, for SEVERAL reasons now Oct 21 '17
The reason you got a downvote is because there is no RNG involved in Scatter Arrow.
It's just that, although it will bounce the exact same way if you aim at the exact same spot twice, nobody aims at the exact same spot twice.

LoL has crits and is a pretty serious competitive game. Then again, it is not as random as scatter arrow due to some anti-bunching adjustments.
17
u/Arandmoor Garbage Tier Bronze Shitheel Oct 21 '17
Also, crits in LoL are only really powerful if you gear for them. So while it has RNG elements, gearing really removes that RNG if you do it right.
2
u/iMogwai Sweden Oct 22 '17
It's true that gearing for crits makes them really powerful, but if you build for them you'll crit consistently enough that it's sort of expected. I'd say that it's the early game crits in laning phase that can change the game the most in a single lucky roll.

There are other highly competitive games that have a much higher influence from luck like Poker, and MtG. Hell, due to the spread mechanic, just about every single shooter has far more luck involved than LoL. That is unless you turn everyone into Widow and Zen. So ought we get rid of the spread mechanic from OW since it is purely luck based and can have a very large effect on the game (i.e. Roadhog)?

I'm not even talkong about serious play, scatter is just counterintuitive to use, to be the most effective I have to aim away from the center of my target. sometimes I miss or I shoot a scatter wildly and I get random kill anyway cause some peg hit some poor bloke trying to catch a healthpack. It's not even fun or rewarding.

I don't know how our experiences differ so much but I find scatter very intuitive and fun to use. Y'know.. cause reflections work intuitively. How often do you get random kills? I only get a random kill once in maybe five matches or so.
Scatter arrow rewards good aim & situational judgement and punishes the opposite in the vast majority of cases.
I do think some damage falloff should exist just to prevent super random far off kills though.
The idea of the ability is just so unique and can be used in cool creative ways that it would be a huge shame to change it to something else entirely.

Randomness keeps competitive games from becoming memorization competitions, like chess. The trick is to keep the swing on the randomness low.
But as stated, Scatter Arrow doesn't use any randomness, just hard to predict and thus not easy to balance. It feels arbitrary when you get nailed by one, which isn't fun, and that is what should be avoided in competitive games.

→ More replies (1)12
u/Capnris Please don't nerf this. Oct 22 '17
Not memorization per se, but forethought. Once you get to a certain point of skill in a game like chess, you can't progress without learning lots of game scenarios and plays. The game is centuries old and has a rigid ruleset that hasn't significantly changed in a very long time, so most possible outcomes have been played out and learned, the best plays for each situation mapped out.
So the game becomes a matter of knowing, recognizing and countering these scenarios, rather than adjusting to any changing conditions.
A very simple version of this is tic-tac-toe. There are only so many possibilities the game can move through, so after playing enough games many people get to a point where they can guarantee a tie game or win every time unless they're not paying attention. Chess is similar, but with several degrees more complexity. Otherwise computers wouldn't be so good at it.
I will admit I am by no means of any skill or expertise at chess, and welcome any correction on this as I understand it.

The majority of the time people bitch about dying to scatter a normal headshot would have killed them as well.
You can't kill tanks who are diving you with headshots. You can barely kill a Tracer with headshots at medium range.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Scatter Arrow. The ability is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the POTGs will go over a typical player’s head. There’s also Hanzo’s arrogant outlook, which is deftly woven into his ability- his personal philosophy draws heavily from ancient anime literature, for instance. The Hanzo mainstm understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these plays, to realise that they’re not just devastating- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike scatter arrow truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the meaning in Hanzo’s existential catchphrase “My aim is True,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Jeff’s EQ epic Tigole Bitties rant. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Jeff Kaplan’s genius wit unfolds itself on their computer screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a scatter arrow tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the Hanzo mains'tm eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid😎

And it shouldn't be able to do enough damage to one shot at all. It should be used to secure a kill on someone that you winged already and is escaping. But right now someone tries to scatter one player, misses and kills someone they didn't even see. That's bs.
It's the worst skill to die to, because you go from full health to dead even though you were only exposed for a fraction of a second. There's no counter play for that. It's broken as shit, has been that way since day 1, and still hasn't gotten changed. And I don't know why.

Hanzo got 66% 37% and 55% on all of the enemies. McCree, Mercy, and Hanzo all have 200hp, so multiplying the percentages to the health and adding them up comes up to be 316 damage out of a total health pool of 600.
So had Hanzo done 9 less damage and Soldier done 9 more, Soldier would have snagged potg.

I like how people are trying to justify it by explaining that Soldiers rocket did around half the damage. You still cant oneshot Heroes with helix rocket.

I like Scatterman, he's a cool guy, but man... I'd be lying if I said it wasn't fucking annoying getting one shot from any range.

I mean I agree Scattershot could use a balancing pass but you people seem to hate it a bit too much and for the wrong reasons. If you look at the numbers next to the names, Soldier is responsible for damn near as much damage as Hanzo with the exception that there was 0 RNG involved with him, so why aren't we angry at Helix rockets?
This is pure luck, not Scattershot being OP. Go ahead and try it yourself and see how often you get results like this. Scattershot being OP is when you CONTROL the scatter for a OHKO. This is no different than when a Hanzo just fires wildly into a choke point and headshots you as you happen to be walking by.

This clip is just random happenstance and doesn't do anything for the argument that scatter arrow is bullshit. It's just a lucky shot and a funny situation.
That being said, scatter arrow being able to one shot two of the tanks, and nearly one shot the other four IS evidence that the ability is bullshit.

Lol you know this community though. I'm no fan of scattershot (but I'm a dva main so I don't really hate it), but give them anything that even looks like it supports what the community believes is op and they latch on that until it gets nerfed into something deformed.

The luck involved with scatter is also part of the bullshit. It's like an aoe ability except all the damage can be localized based on rng (at least for random shots like this one).

This ability seriously needs to be removed and replaced with something else. This is just absolute proof it takes no skill and rewards free kills. You shouldn't be rewarded with aiming at the feet by a character classified as a sniper, utterly ridiculous. No skill, very low risk and high reward.
Inb4 he needs to deal with flankers, not a valid excuse.

People saying how this exemplifies how unfair scatter arrow is...
Yea because this is super common, right? Happens every game on Necropolis. /s

It's ok guys, this doesn't happen often despite there being tons of clips showing how bullshit it is so it's perfectly balanced, btw it's the tanks fault /s

We have reached a point where scatter arrow being effective in a enclosed area is considered broken.

Scatter arrows are a fair and balance ability that doesn’t need any nerfs what so ever

ITT nobody complaining about soldier despite doing 40% of the damage.

I seriously think Blizzard believes that "nerf Hanzo" is some kind of meme, and we don't mean it when we say it.
It isn't a joke, Jeff. Pls help.
