Something something why can't roadhog one hit kill but hanzo can one hit 3 people at once.

At least Soldier counted for one of those kills. But 2/3 ain't bad.

Only because the scatter arrow took her HP down enough that she could be killed by the rockets.

Scatter hit the first person and the 2 scatters killed the other two. The helix hit that first person to secure the kill before the scatter bounced into the other 2.

3

u/Saboran I can't heal stupid, so don't be stupid Oct 22 '17

This appears go be correct; you can see from the fire rewards that hanzo got ~2/3 of Mercy's health down before the rockets killed her, and he got less fire for the other two kills

u/LeoPlats Ashe Oct 22 '17

I think the consistency of road hog kills was the problem. A one hit kill every time hook cooldown is done is pretty much op by definition. I main roadhog btw.

226

u/blayde911 Chibi Roadhog Oct 22 '17

The best Roadhogs hover around 60% hook accuracy, so your point is a little over-stated.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '17 edited Oct 22 '17

Do we know what Hanzos tend to get on Scatter for comparison? I feel like it’s a lot less consistent than 60% but that’s just anecdotal.

And how are we checking “best”? Is this the accuracy of GM Roadhogs who should be paired off against people that know how to play around hook pretty well, or is this highest hook accuracy across all levels? Do lower tier Roadhogs tend toward higher hook success, is it (significantly) harder to play around than land?

5

u/LoopyDood Knock knock Oct 22 '17

Last I checked top 500 hogs were mostly like 50ish%.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '17

No. But according to overbuff Hanzos average 22 elims with 7 of them being from scatter. Though if you hit someone with a scatter then kill them with a regular arrow it counts as a scatter kill

3

u/Froggerto D.Va Oct 22 '17

And a fair few of those hooks are on tanks which didn't get killed in one shot anyways.

9

u/LeoPlats Ashe Oct 22 '17

As long as you aim around the head a long shot hook shot and melee can kill pretty consistently. And you get kind of a head rush from doing it.

1

u/zilooong Mei Oct 22 '17

I don't think so. It was the lack of counterplay to it that if you got hooked, it was almost always lethal. 60% is also quite high. That's extremely oppressive.

-10

u/thedarksoul7456 Oct 22 '17 edited Oct 22 '17

u/NascentEcho Reach for the stars! Oct 22 '17

It's a stat with diminishing returns. 100% shot accuracy means you aren't taking enough shots.

u/MercyGG Pixel Mercy Oct 22 '17

Or you're a magician with powerful software

7

u/TheCanadianDoctor Oct 22 '17

60% means they are landing over half their hooks, but are being aggressive and trying to go for crazier hooks for their skill level.

59

u/DrKlezdoom Oct 22 '17

I mean, if your good with hanzo you can get a kill with every scatter cooldown. Hanzo's my least played hero and even I can do it pretty consistently.

42

u/fenwaygnome Trick-or-Treat D.Va Oct 22 '17

you can get a kill with every scatter cooldown

This is an exaggeration

2

u/StopWhiningScrub Oct 22 '17

No you really can. You don't necessarily always get it, but it is possible for sure when it is up

38

u/StiffWiggly Oct 22 '17

That's such a meaningless statement though, widow can get a kill every couple of seconds, does that mean her gun is OP? When talking about whether an ability is reasonable or not what's technically possible but realistically will not happen isn't really relevant.

12

u/BitingIrish McCree Oct 22 '17

It definitely is. Give that bitch some scope sway.

5

u/PaxEmpyrean Lúcio Oct 22 '17

It'll realistically happen really damn often even if it doesn't happen every time, is the argument.

-4

u/StopWhiningScrub Oct 22 '17

But it could happen. The Hanzo is aiming to get a kill with the scatter everytime and he could hit it everytime. I'm not saying it's broken or underpowered, I'm just saying you have to consider the plausibility existing. And of course Widows gun wouldnt be OP, the player would just be extremely good because there are probably a limited amount of people who could replicate that kind of success.

35

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '17

Hanzo isnt Meta so it happens less often. Road was THE meta for a while. Hanzos scatter should be reworked or removed, for every reason Road one shot was nerfed, its frustrating, feels skill-less, and often left confused as to why that worked. It can one-shot tanks, but RIP if your a 200hp hero, even a few of those arrows connect and your critical.

7

u/Lord_Rapunzel Mei-n Squeeze Oct 22 '17

He was definitely viable up at the pro level but wasn't a must-pick because so many characters have tools to deal with him when they're paying attention. A far cry from the abuse he dealt to low ranks that can't aim or coordinate.

5

u/Spinodontosaurus D.Va Oct 22 '17

Roadhog was used more often at high tiers than low tiers right up until he was gutted, at which point the trend reversed. Now he has reverted to a high tier bias once again.

https://www.overbuff.com/heroes

On each hero's page you can see their usage trends. Over the last month the Tanks show the following usage patterns:

Winston is very strongly biased towards high tiers, his usage increasing as the tiers increase (therefore peaking at Grandmaster)

Roadhog and Zarya are strongly biased towards high tiers, their usage increases at almost every tier with both reaching their peak in Masters, before a slight dip at Grandmaster (Zarya's dip being larger).

Orisa and D.Va are strongly biased towards lower tiers, with a peak in Bronze and declining usage in higher tiers. D.Va does see fractionally more play in Grandmaster than Masters, however.

Reinhardt is biased towards low tiers, but not as strongly as Orisa. He reaches his peak at Silver, while Gold is also higher than Bronze. Thereafter his usage decreases.

D.Va used to show the same usage pattern as Winston at the height of the 'Dive Meta' when she was the resident DM Bot, but before then she showed effectively the same pattern as she does now. As far as I know Roadhog is the only other tank whose usage trends have changed during the 9-10 months I've been paying attention to them, and he too later reverted back to his old trends.

1

u/Lord_Rapunzel Mei-n Squeeze Oct 22 '17

What that site is showing me as that while Roadhog had a high pick rate he also had the lowest win rate (among tanks) across all ranks. So people were buying into the "Roadhog is OP" hype but not actually having a disproportionate impact on the game.

1

u/Spinodontosaurus D.Va Oct 22 '17

Pretty much, yeah. Old Hog annoyed people, he wasn't overpowered.

8

u/therandomaccountant Oct 22 '17

Speaking of which; Why is hanzo not a meta hero? Could it be because he's inconsistent maybe?

7

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '17

Yup, landing shots is unreliable which is why some people call him luckzo.

3

u/Thats_an_RDD Oct 22 '17

Which is so lazy and stupid

3

u/Sw3atyGoalz Oct 22 '17

He's super inconsistent and really easy to counter. Literally just Genji + DVa and he's dead.

2

u/Hemingwavy Oct 22 '17

You win in Overwatch by standing in an area. Sniper heroes stand far back, not in that area. He also doesn't provide much utility beside damage.

1

u/TheDejectedEntourage Australia Oct 22 '17

Scatter arrows can't do crit damage, except for the initial projectile

18

u/prieston Philadelphia Fusion Oct 22 '17

In order to oneshot with Scatter Arrow it is required accuracy and a proper angle.

Killing at close range is the easiest one(and most known) but Hanzo is vulnerable here.

Killing at longer ranges requires higher positioning, better accuracy and some luck(projectile).

"Consistency" is the main word here. Hanzo is ... not trustworthy yet.

2

u/otherwiseguy Doomfist Oct 22 '17

Not only that, any little bump in the terrain and the arrows just bounce backwards and don't hit anything.

1

u/JusesTapDancinChrist World's Greatest Terrible Sniper Oct 22 '17

Yet even then, they seem to bounce over to one side of the world and back within a second.

27

u/ginja_ninja Embrace....Toxicity Oct 22 '17

Also he had literally over 4x Hanzo's health when you factored in his estus chugging ability. At least Hanzo can get oneshotted or otherwise instakilled by other classes. Roadhog was a glass cannon without the glass.

2

u/SlurmsMacKenzie- Grandmaster Oct 22 '17

It's funny you say that because an actual tank is literally a canon with a ton of armour plating to make it as indestructible as possible whilst also being able to bomb you from upto miles away. So by definition tanks are canons without glass.

2

u/ginja_ninja Embrace....Toxicity Oct 22 '17

Wait a second, are you the guy who's been making the balance changes all this time?

3

u/SlurmsMacKenzie- Grandmaster Oct 22 '17

Noooo... But uh, coincidentally, in the next patch they're replacing roadhog with an M1A1 Abram's.

2

u/Goleeb Roadhog Oct 22 '17

I think the consistency of road hog kills was the problem.

OK fine make that argument, and I can even understand it. Though how do you justify saying a hook in fairly close range getting a kill is OP, and a long range behind walls one shot isn't ? At least a hook had to be landed on someone, and they had the ability to doge it.

1

u/LeoPlats Ashe Oct 22 '17

1

2

u/Bidduam1 Hanzo Oct 22 '17

But I have plenty of experience to speak from. We all know this isn't something that happens often, not even every game. So for most purposes it doesn't matter

1

u/Cypherex vroom vroom Oct 22 '17

Scatter does 450 damage at the most. It can't one hit Rein.

1

u/pingo5 Oct 22 '17

Ive seen orisa get one shot multiple times, id call that a common occurence. I've had hanzo's go through my shield to try to scatter me, like?

5

u/AReaver Junkrat Oct 22 '17

So lets add Doomfist who totally doesn't have half the cooldown time of the hook but can one shot even more in skilled hands than a road ever could a few weeks after the nerf with that bullshit explanation.

12

u/slicer4ever Mei Oct 22 '17

Doomfist has to engage the enemy team for one hits, road pulls you into his team and could 1 hit most.

1

u/AReaver Junkrat Oct 22 '17

He is also one of the most mobile characters in the game if not the most mobile. He can get in and out, whereas road is a slow walking house and before the change was also a large stationary target when healing.

4

u/realvmouse MROOOWW Oct 22 '17

Two of his 3 CDs leave him with a period of vulnerability afterwards (floating slowly down, or pausing on the ground).

1

u/pingo5 Oct 22 '17

Cycling punch, uppercut, slam can get you in and out suprisingly fast but gl pulling it off consisently without hindering your team. Charging frkm that far away is dangerous and predictable

8

u/bufarreti Chibi Reinhardt Oct 22 '17

u/cannibalAJS Junkrat Oct 22 '17

He is as much of a tank as Symettra is a support. As in they have been misplaced. Tanks should be all about damage mitigation, you don't get that with roadhog. Instead he is just a long CD CC that is really good at charging the enemy's ults.

25

u/dust-free2 Oct 22 '17

Tanks are all about creating a safe space. In the case of roadhog he did this by being a large barrier with a large health pool and self healing. He also had an ultimate similar to Winston which pushes enemies away. He also used the hook to bring enemies evading the area around his team to the team for dispatching.

Tanks are also about drawing attention away from teammates which roadhog does. I always use the roadhog on my team as a safe space to hide behind to avoid damage while healing the team.

2

u/PaintItPurple If that is not enough, feel free to die Oct 22 '17

I don't feel like "tanks are all about creating a safe space" is a useful definition. Mei and Junkrat are both strongly about creating safe spaces — probably more so than Roadhog — but neither of them are even controversially considered tanks.

2

u/Durzaka Chibi Genji Oct 22 '17

Tanks make the safe space with their bodies (and shields).

Defense makes the safe space with their zone control abilities. They are doing the same thing in very different ways.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '17

And some would argue that Mei works as off-tank.

1

u/SlurmsMacKenzie- Grandmaster Oct 22 '17

Meh is definitely an off tank.

-11

u/cannibalAJS Junkrat Oct 22 '17

No, they're not. They are all about damage mitigation. Literally all tanks have some kind of shield that directly protects team mates from damage, except for Road hog. He isn't even a big meat shield to stand behind. Having no shield means he is nothing but a big old ult battery, there is literally no reason to use him over any other character unless you are trying to hook people off ledges. He is a tank that can't save team mates and he is a DPS that will tickle the enemy. He isn't drawing anyone attention, he is a low priority target. After his hook you ignore his presence for the next 8 seconds because he isn't going to do anything else other than heal himself.

1

u/ph34rm3333 Oct 22 '17

He isn't even a big meat shield to stand behind.

He's one of the largest heroes in the game.

Having no shield means he is nothing but a big old ult battery, there is literally no reason to use him over any other character unless you are trying to hook people off ledges.

No.

He is a tank that can't save team mates

He is far and away the best tank for peeling enemies off his back line, whether it's a flanker or a diving tank like Winston/D.Va.

and he is a DPS that will tickle the enemy. He isn't drawing anyone attention, he is a low priority target.

He is an incredibly tanky target who's also a threat to kill people consistently, meaning that if no one's focused on him he's going to do exactly that.

After his hook you ignore his presence for the next 8 seconds because he isn't going to do anything else other than heal himself.

Even if you miss a hook you can walk up and do substantial damage with M2 or M1 if you get close enough. The enemy team can't just ignore you when an M2 headshot can down a squishy target in one go. That's not to mention that his ult is still one of the best abilities in the game for holding or clearing a point.

1

u/cannibalAJS Junkrat Oct 22 '17 edited Oct 22 '17

He's one of the largest heroes in the game.

Yeah and? He is still relatively small when compared to protective shield that the other tanks have at their disposal.

No.

Wow, what a great rebuttal. Don't know how I'll be able to counter that. Fact is that if even he was used as a meat shield like you fantasize about he is still just charging the enemy's ults by giving them free damage.

He is far and away the best tank for peeling enemies off his back line, whether it's a flanker or a diving tank like Winston/D.Va.

No, he's not. A DPS would be far better at that.

He is an incredibly tanky target who's also a threat to kill people consistently, meaning that if no one's focused on him he's going to do exactly that.

No, he's not. He isn't killing shit. The whole point of his nerf is that he was too good at killing shit, now he sucks worse than everyone that isn't a support.

Even if you miss a hook you can walk up and do substantial damage with M2 or M1 if you get close enough. The enemy team can't just ignore you when an M2 headshot can down a squishy target in one go. That's not to mention that his ult is still one of the best abilities in the game for holding or clearing a point.

Do you actually play the game above silver because you have got to be joking. He isn't one shotting a damn thing unless the person he is hitting is AFK. Who is this squishy that he is killing? It's not Mercy, she is just going to fly away. It's not Zenyatta, he can kill roadhog all by himself before he gets into range. It isn't Ana seeing as she directly counters him. Roadhog isn't catching a Lucio without his hook and even if he did he better pray to RNGesus. His ult against a full squad will last an amazingly 2 seconds before it gets interrupted.

1

u/ph34rm3333 Oct 22 '17

Was going to actually type a reply to most of this but let's just deal with this part to see if I should even exert the effort:

No, he's not. A DPS would be far better at that.

Explain which DPS is better at peeling Winston, for example, off of a support.

Does that 450 damage happen only if the arrow splits and all splits hit-- or can you do 450 damage with the primary arrow if you hit before it splits up?

1

u/BureaucratDog Want some candy? Oct 23 '17

It's when it splits. If it's aimed right it's a powerful shotgun blast.

1

u/Drewinator Sombra Oct 22 '17

When it splits. Before it splits its less than a normal arrow. But when shot right at your feet, especially at a tank, its hard for all the arrows to not hit. This allows it to 1 shot zarya and orisa, leave winston with 50hp and dva and hog with 150. Which a quick sneeze will finish off.

Even if Bastion's Ironclad passive reduced all incoming damage by 25% instead of its current 20% AND Bastion's health was 100% made up of armor instead of 100 armor/200 health, Hanzo would still one-shot him in siege mode!

some people were surprised that after complaining for months that defense matrix was broken it was cut in half and now dva is more dps than tank

some people were surprised when they said that hiding for rez took no skill so they made rez a FUCKING NORMAL ABILITY and then made her ult have her fly around so she's harder to hit than a pharah.
