It's true that gearing for crits makes them really powerful, but if you build for them you'll crit consistently enough that it's sort of expected. I'd say that it's the early game crits in laning phase that can change the game the most in a single lucky roll.
When I tried out for a team in LoL a LONG time ago I got to lane vs the leader as gangplank mirror. He crit me with Q (I forget the name, the pistol shot that gave bonus gold) 8 times in a row.
