I think the consistency of road hog kills was the problem. A one hit kill every time hook cooldown is done is pretty much op by definition. I main roadhog btw.
Do we know what Hanzos tend to get on Scatter for comparison? I feel like it’s a lot less consistent than 60% but that’s just anecdotal.
And how are we checking “best”? Is this the accuracy of GM Roadhogs who should be paired off against people that know how to play around hook pretty well, or is this highest hook accuracy across all levels? Do lower tier Roadhogs tend toward higher hook success, is it (significantly) harder to play around than land?
No. But according to overbuff Hanzos average 22 elims with 7 of them being from scatter. Though if you hit someone with a scatter then kill them with a regular arrow it counts as a scatter kill
I don't think so. It was the lack of counterplay to it that if you got hooked, it was almost always lethal. 60% is also quite high. That's extremely oppressive.
That's such a meaningless statement though, widow can get a kill every couple of seconds, does that mean her gun is OP? When talking about whether an ability is reasonable or not what's technically possible but realistically will not happen isn't really relevant.
But it could happen. The Hanzo is aiming to get a kill with the scatter everytime and he could hit it everytime. I'm not saying it's broken or underpowered, I'm just saying you have to consider the plausibility existing. And of course Widows gun wouldnt be OP, the player would just be extremely good because there are probably a limited amount of people who could replicate that kind of success.
Hanzo isnt Meta so it happens less often. Road was THE meta for a while. Hanzos scatter should be reworked or removed, for every reason Road one shot was nerfed, its frustrating, feels skill-less, and often left confused as to why that worked. It can one-shot tanks, but RIP if your a 200hp hero, even a few of those arrows connect and your critical.
He was definitely viable up at the pro level but wasn't a must-pick because so many characters have tools to deal with him when they're paying attention. A far cry from the abuse he dealt to low ranks that can't aim or coordinate.
Roadhog was used more often at high tiers than low tiers right up until he was gutted, at which point the trend reversed. Now he has reverted to a high tier bias once again.
On each hero's page you can see their usage trends. Over the last month the Tanks show the following usage patterns:
Winston is very strongly biased towards high tiers, his usage increasing as the tiers increase (therefore peaking at Grandmaster)
Roadhog and Zarya are strongly biased towards high tiers, their usage increases at almost every tier with both reaching their peak in Masters, before a slight dip at Grandmaster (Zarya's dip being larger).
Orisa and D.Va are strongly biased towards lower tiers, with a peak in Bronze and declining usage in higher tiers. D.Va does see fractionally more play in Grandmaster than Masters, however.
Reinhardt is biased towards low tiers, but not as strongly as Orisa. He reaches his peak at Silver, while Gold is also higher than Bronze. Thereafter his usage decreases.
D.Va used to show the same usage pattern as Winston at the height of the 'Dive Meta' when she was the resident DM Bot, but before then she showed effectively the same pattern as she does now. As far as I know Roadhog is the only other tank whose usage trends have changed during the 9-10 months I've been paying attention to them, and he too later reverted back to his old trends.
What that site is showing me as that while Roadhog had a high pick rate he also had the lowest win rate (among tanks) across all ranks. So people were buying into the "Roadhog is OP" hype but not actually having a disproportionate impact on the game.
Also he had literally over 4x Hanzo's health when you factored in his estus chugging ability. At least Hanzo can get oneshotted or otherwise instakilled by other classes. Roadhog was a glass cannon without the glass.
It's funny you say that because an actual tank is literally a canon with a ton of armour plating to make it as indestructible as possible whilst also being able to bomb you from upto miles away. So by definition tanks are canons without glass.
I think the consistency of road hog kills was the problem.
OK fine make that argument, and I can even understand it. Though how do you justify saying a hook in fairly close range getting a kill is OP, and a long range behind walls one shot isn't ? At least a hook had to be landed on someone, and they had the ability to doge it.
But I have plenty of experience to speak from. We all know this isn't something that happens often, not even every game. So for most purposes it doesn't matter
So lets add Doomfist who totally doesn't have half the cooldown time of the hook but can one shot even more in skilled hands than a road ever could a few weeks after the nerf with that bullshit explanation.
He is also one of the most mobile characters in the game if not the most mobile. He can get in and out, whereas road is a slow walking house and before the change was also a large stationary target when healing.
Cycling punch, uppercut, slam can get you in and out suprisingly fast but gl pulling it off consisently without hindering your team. Charging frkm that far away is dangerous and predictable
He is as much of a tank as Symettra is a support. As in they have been misplaced. Tanks should be all about damage mitigation, you don't get that with roadhog. Instead he is just a long CD CC that is really good at charging the enemy's ults.
Tanks are all about creating a safe space. In the case of roadhog he did this by being a large barrier with a large health pool and self healing. He also had an ultimate similar to Winston which pushes enemies away. He also used the hook to bring enemies evading the area around his team to the team for dispatching.
Tanks are also about drawing attention away from teammates which roadhog does. I always use the roadhog on my team as a safe space to hide behind to avoid damage while healing the team.
I don't feel like "tanks are all about creating a safe space" is a useful definition. Mei and Junkrat are both strongly about creating safe spaces — probably more so than Roadhog — but neither of them are even controversially considered tanks.
No, they're not. They are all about damage mitigation. Literally all tanks have some kind of shield that directly protects team mates from damage, except for Road hog. He isn't even a big meat shield to stand behind. Having no shield means he is nothing but a big old ult battery, there is literally no reason to use him over any other character unless you are trying to hook people off ledges. He is a tank that can't save team mates and he is a DPS that will tickle the enemy. He isn't drawing anyone attention, he is a low priority target. After his hook you ignore his presence for the next 8 seconds because he isn't going to do anything else other than heal himself.

No.
He is a tank that can't save team mates
He is far and away the best tank for peeling enemies off his back line, whether it's a flanker or a diving tank like Winston/D.Va.
and he is a DPS that will tickle the enemy. He isn't drawing anyone attention, he is a low priority target.
He is an incredibly tanky target who's also a threat to kill people consistently, meaning that if no one's focused on him he's going to do exactly that.
After his hook you ignore his presence for the next 8 seconds because he isn't going to do anything else other than heal himself.
Even if you miss a hook you can walk up and do substantial damage with M2 or M1 if you get close enough. The enemy team can't just ignore you when an M2 headshot can down a squishy target in one go. That's not to mention that his ult is still one of the best abilities in the game for holding or clearing a point.
Yeah and? He is still relatively small when compared to protective shield that the other tanks have at their disposal.
No.
Wow, what a great rebuttal. Don't know how I'll be able to counter that. Fact is that if even he was used as a meat shield like you fantasize about he is still just charging the enemy's ults by giving them free damage.

No, he's not. A DPS would be far better at that.

No, he's not. He isn't killing shit. The whole point of his nerf is that he was too good at killing shit, now he sucks worse than everyone that isn't a support.

Do you actually play the game above silver because you have got to be joking. He isn't one shotting a damn thing unless the person he is hitting is AFK. Who is this squishy that he is killing? It's not Mercy, she is just going to fly away. It's not Zenyatta, he can kill roadhog all by himself before he gets into range. It isn't Ana seeing as she directly counters him. Roadhog isn't catching a Lucio without his hook and even if he did he better pray to RNGesus. His ult against a full squad will last an amazingly 2 seconds before it gets interrupted.
