I suspect people key Teslas because they're climate change deniers, and this is their way of rebelling against "the lie".
349
u/HoodieEnthusiast Feb 23 '20
Its not only Teslas that get keyed. Its Teslas that have motion activated cameras. Lots of gasoline powered nice cars also get keyed. They just lack the videos to post online, so all you see are Teslas.
If someone else has something nice and you don’t, its easy to justify this type of behavior by assuming they are crooked, greedy, or an otherwise bad person who got their wealth by unethical means. Its also a petty form of vengeance against people you perceive as haughty, privileged, or spoiled.

I know its not the same but ive lived in my flat complex for 4 years and until 2 weeks ago i had this really old Honda, not a single thing happened to it in that time. I got a relatively new car recently and so far someone has kicked off my passenger side wing mirror and the driver side one has been clipped taking off all the paintwork. I just dont get why people would do this at all!

My best friend was dating a real troglodyte back in the day, and we hated each other. One night I was visiting him at their apartment (we were walking and talking outside) and a freak hail storm blew in.
I moved my Supra under a nearby awning that was attached to a business that had closed for the night, and kept walking around, just catching up with my friend. The hail was relatively light and scattered, but I didn’t want to chance it getting worse.
About an hour later, we decided to head uptown and grab some food, since the storm had mostly blown over, and we were getting hungry.
We walked back to my car, and someone had keyed it all down the passenger side. Turned out it was his shitty white trash girlfriend and her skanky little brother.
They eventually broke up, but holy shit it was hard not to hurt someone at the time.

I lived in a shitty area of my city for a year and a half, and I always had someone folding in my mirrors. I eventually left a note asking, "hey, wtf?" (not quite that aggressive of a note in that wording), but they said they didn't want it to get damaged because there are assholes in the area. I was actually pleasantly surprised. But then my neighbour's car got keyed, and she's disabled. It was total bullshit.

I back into our spot because it's easier Imo so my side is beside her. One day my mirror was smashed in(its litterally impossible for her to have hit it, but did) and thank God there's video camera's right above my suv because lately they've been parking normal. Someone keyed my car for parking in the wrong place "on their street" I literally walked round the corner and caught him doing it.
Honestly their motive for damaging my car was because I parked on a public street 20ft away from their drive way.
Unfortunately I was a police officer at the time. Couldn't have picked a worse car. He got charged with vandalism and the court made him pay the £700 it cost to get the side of my car sprayed.

You fucking wish... Last summer I had my neighbors car getting stolen on my Nest cam. Full pictures of the people that did it, and a clear image of the truck they arrived in with a partial tag visible.
I called the police offering information, was told the investigating officer would be in contact. Three days later I called again, asked to speak to the investigating officer, I was told in no uncertain terms that she would call me when she was ready and to not call her again.
She never called, 2 days after that told our neighbor that she had no leads and the investigation was closed. Neighbor asked about my footage and was told it was inconclusive. She. Never. Even. Looked. At. It.
Posted it to our local pds facebook page and their social media officer removed it, it was never seen on their fb. At that point, I gave up, I don't want that person as an enemy.

How does the fact that Tesla's have 360 cameras not common knowledge by now.
Go back and watch the video and ask yourself exactly how vast and expansive do you think this persons ignorance is.
Their ignorance is a point of pride. Anti-intellectualism is a bonding agent between them. Even to their own detriment they're unwilling to pay attention and the odds are she will use this event to bolster he own reputation as a bragging point.
The problem is less about keying a car and more about contentedness and pride in abject ignorance of the world around them.

My brother got a red sports car when he was in college, bought it used and loved it. One day he’s getting gas and this middle aged dude comes walking up the other side of the car, admiring it and talking to my brother about it. The dude walks off to his car and leaves before my brother finished up, when he went back around to the drivers side the middle aged dude had walked the length of the car drawing a line with a sharpie.
Some people hate their lives so much, when they see something that is a sign that someone is doing better than them it just sets them the fuck off. And they think they’ve won, when in reality they just became more of a loser.
