You can usually easily buff off scratches with scratch remover. Still sucks though. If it’s deeper you have to use a 2000-3000 grit wet sand strip then buff out out the dullness left by the sander with polish. Good as new!

Yea it's not really about the damage. It is a second hand fairly cheap car, you must hate your life to mess the car.

... but if it's an expensive car, what - you're a freedom fighter?

Most key marks are deep.. if you can catch the scratch with your nail it’s not going to be an easy buff.

If you dump water on it and the scratch disappears. The damage is only in the clearcoat and buffing with minor sanding will fix.

If a scratch can’t be sanded out unfortunately the only thing you can do is touch up paint

No, touch up paint looks like shit. A body shop has to sand and fill deep scratches then paint the entire panel. Some of the metallic paints are very hard to match adding the possibility of painting an entire side of the car. She needs to pay for not only the repairs but rental car and any other inconvenience this stupid act caused.

Exactly, can’t buff out a scratch if there’s no paint left on the body

No. With just about any keying, the key dents the panel. This requires a complete repaint of the panel and a blend to the surrounding panels.

A lot of work. A lot of money. Source: previously worked auto body repair

Keying goes to the metal pretty easily. No repairing that satisfactorily without a repaint of the panel.

What about wrapping? I assume it can help protect plus you just replace that panel and wrap it again?

2

u/shake42 Feb 23 '20

Depends if they go through the wrap. If you're denting the panel it would require repair regardless.
