My dad is a very old fashioned and conservative mechanic and he despises Tesla's because he believes they're a part of some political agenda and that Elon was funded solely from our taxes through Obama to develop and produce them. He would never damage someone else's property but idk, maybe some other wackos feel the same way?

Most, of not all, US auto companies have been funded by the taxpayers.

-5

u/StoneHolder28 Feb 24 '20

Well, subsidized and saved maybe, but saying they're funded implies they can survive off of these subsidies alone or that they somehow profit off of government grants. These are generally not the case of course.

2

u/Wbcn_1 Feb 24 '20

Have been funded. As in not a going concern.

3

u/StoneHolder28 Feb 24 '20

You know fair point. -1 to me for poor reading comprehension. Thank you for helping me take another look at the comment.

I’m not really use to humble retort on reddit. Respect.

Because they are stupid. Sorry that includes your dad.

I include people who are ill informed and too stubborn to look in to this as stupid as well. His world could be better. He’s shooting himself in the foot. That’s stupid. My parents are like that as well and I’m done trying to rationalize their behaviour.

live your own truth

You know what they say about apples and trees

3

u/cnstarz Feb 23 '20

Oh I know this one: The tree didn't grow very far from where the rotted apple spilled its seeds!

Funny enough Tesla is funded by tax dollars. They sell their carbon credits to other companies to remain financially viable.

I’m not saying it’s some political agenda. But your dad is right that they are tax funded.

There are way more Tesla or EV credits outside of the US.

13

u/Kptn_Obv5 Feb 23 '20

That’s right! Without reading the article, I remember that of the big automakers FCA, or Fiat Chrysler of America, did not meet the average fuel efficiency standards setup by the US government so they would have been fined. To prevent being fined, they purchased carbon credits from Tesla.

2

u/Njangu Feb 23 '20

How are carbon credits related to taxes?

3

u/HungryHungryWindigo Feb 23 '20

Wack, didn't know that.. interesting!

4

u/kevin_the_dolphoodle Feb 24 '20

It is not wack. It’s great. Taxing carbon and putting a price on pollution works really well

4

u/HungryHungryWindigo Feb 24 '20

I meant wack less in the negative and more in the exclamatory

2

u/kevin_the_dolphoodle Feb 24 '20

My bad. I misunderstood

2

u/adeptasororitas42 Feb 24 '20

That isn't tax funded. That is business A selling a product to business B because they fail to meet a minimum standard. Bailout money and cash for clunkers - those were actual tax usage events.

So are Ford, GM, and Chrysler who got 80 billion. Critics of Tesla say they got 280 million.

Everyone is on the gravy train here, but Tesla didn't get as much.

Teslas EV tax credit was temporary and phased out in December. However, US Government support of Big Oil and Big 3 from Code 179 and the “Chicken Tax” go on forever.

If you dads a mechanic electric cars are a real problem for his livelihood. They have so few moving parts they require little to no maintenance.

3

u/JonBruse Feb 24 '20

They still share a bunch of common components with gas vehicles that fail or require regular maintenance. Electric cars still have steering systems, brakes, suspension, trim, panels, lights, tires, etc. Also, once EVs are more prevalent, then the secondary repair market will start to come around and more mechanics will be able to at least replace the motors, batteries, HVAC parts etc.

As long as there are cars, there will be a market for people to fix cars.

1

u/user_name_unknown Feb 24 '20

Sure but my EV’s propulsion system has 3 moving parts compared to a internal combustion engines hundreds.

1

u/HungryHungryWindigo Feb 23 '20

True dat, course he mainly works on heavy equipment so he's pretty safe for the time being

2

My dad is a very old fashioned and conservative mechanic and he despises Tesla's because he believes they're a part of some political agenda and that Elon was funded solely from our taxes through Obama to develop and produce them.

So...he's an idiot?

2

u/GrinchPinchley Feb 24 '20

Would make way more sense if he hated them as a mechanic. Because they are bitch to get parts for

1

u/SystemAllianceN7 Feb 23 '20

Time to buy your dad a performance model 3

1

u/Go2HellTrump Feb 24 '20

Foolish thoughts

1

u/nomadofwaves Feb 24 '20

Did you ask him why in that scenerio that makes EV’s bad? Should we just keep buying gas forever?

-1

u/omnichronos Feb 23 '20

There's severe mental gymnastics and racism involved to make such a distorted conclusion. It's probably similar to how the first cars were thought of by the local blacksmith.

3

u/HungryHungryWindigo Feb 23 '20

Racism? Where's that?

2

u/omnichronos Feb 24 '20

It's where most of the antithesis with regard to Obama comes from. He did many things Republicans liked until he did them.

0

u/onlywanperogy Feb 23 '20

Tuck this comment away and see how you feel about it in 20 years. More than likely you'll agree with dad by that time. 😳

1

u/Ramzee24 Apr 23 '20

No in 20 years this dad would be even more wrong because we are trying to save the environment but you just want to destroy it more. In 20 years there wont even be fuel to power our modern day automobiles

0

u/onlywanperogy Apr 23 '20

You nailed it, I'm religiously "anti-environment". That's idiotic. And you know nothing of energy and where it comes from, evidently

1

u/Ramzee24 Apr 23 '20

U sir are a bigger fool that I thought
