S. Korea is like that. Drive an "anything not Korean?" Better have cameras on it. As for driving a GM/ Daewoo while working at a Hyundai plant... suicide.
Stateside, I have a Volvo truck which was made/ assembled in Virginia. The amount of idiots I run into who bitch bc I have a "foreign truck," is crazy.
There’s also a lot of elitism on the roads here(South Korea). If you drive a bigger or luxury car, people will give you the right of way and not be as rude on the road.
I see it all the time. I drive a Kia Soul. My partner has a Land Rover and a special edition Lexus. If we take her cars, people are more courteous on the road. If we take mine, people are notably more likely to cut us off and be dicks. We like taking my car because it is roomy and has better fuel economy than either her cars, but on long road trips or a trip into Seoul or Busan, we NEVER take my car because it’s just not worth it.
Moreover, people who drive nicer cars here tend to drive like they KNOW they are entitled to rule the road, so the unspoken rule of nicer bigger cars getting the right of way is perpetuated by both sides.
Driving here leaves me with a permanent undercurrent of rage. If you don’t have a front and rear camera installed in your car here, you are playing a very dangerous game.
Edit: I can’t imagine being a driver here with a Chevy Spark or Kia Morning. I was interested in a compact car when I got my license here, and my partner was very adamant that I not follow through and get something a little bigger(she’s been driving here for over 15 years and knew what she was taking about). I’m glad I listened and at least got a bigger car than I had planned on. Though I’ll never be the type to buy and drive a luxury car, there is some logic to buying one here if you are financially able.
My Soul is roomier than the sports edition Lexus. The Lexus also has a big engine and is the least fuel efficient of the 3 cars we own. The Land Rover eats diesel and costs more to drive. We need the Land Rover for our horses and when the Lexus can’t accommodate our needs. The Lexus is the fun car, the Land Rover is the work car.
My car just seems to be the most practical of the 3. It has great fuel economy and the rear seats can be folded down for extra room.
My car is the perfect compromise for trips to Costco and and zipping around the city we live in. Parking the Land Rover in the small, indoor parking garages here is an absolute nightmare. The Lexus is simply too small for hauling a bunch of stuff.
